Stunning pictures, not thought out story...

"The Secret of Us" is a japanese youtube channel, but only doing chinese BL content. That is one their several short series but a very weak one. While the landscapes are really stunning, the story left so much to be desired. It begins fine - a hurt stranger is found by an to be aspiring veterian - but how they fell in love is not really explained. There is a red flag scene in a tent and then it's like they are together.

In the following episodes it's revealed the stranger had his goal to reach the veterian because his dog saved him from a wolf pack. But when you listen to the story, it does not make much sense, because he mentioned there were other people saving him, so they would have rendered first aid, right? And just because he did not tell him first, they break up and the stranger returns home.

The finale is the most confusing. First it's a time jump and second he wants to search for the stranger but gets a call that mr. stranger should have an operation otherwise his life is in danger and then he appears on a horse. WTF?

This is one of the weakest series from them and I have no clue why they thought the story made any sense. They had six episodes to tell a story, but most of it was filler and not needed and it ends. While it's nice he's back, will he die now? Or what was the reason for him coming back? I can't figure it out and I don't care. The actors tried their best, they delivered a decent performance but I did not feel their attraction to each other. The only good thing about this series are the stunning landscapes which is special because most dramas play out in a big city most of the time. Also the rest of the production quality was top notch wasted on such a script. Handsome actors don't make a story. So my quite high rating is only because of the production quality, because the script is really bad.

My Review to the series - Awakening the Steppe (2026)

Awakening the Steppe stands out most for its beautiful scenery, which is easily one of the strongest aspects of the series ✨.
The landscapes are visually stunning and create a very atmospheric setting. The acting is decent overall-not bad, but also not particularly memorable.

Where the series struggles is the storytelling and pacing. The plot often feels confusing, especially because it’s extremely unclear how much time has actually passed between events.
As a viewer, you’re left guessing whether scenes take place over days, weeks, or months, which makes it hard to feel emotionally grounded in the story.

This becomes especially frustrating in the romance. Within what seems like only 2–3 days, the characters are already declaring love and talking about spending the rest of their lives together, making plans to open a pet clinic together 🐾.
This feels very rushed and unrealistic, considering how little they actually know about each other at that point. Because of this, the emotional development doesn’t feel earned.

Overall, Awakening the Steppe is a quick and easy watch, but it doesn’t leave a lasting impression. Aside from the beautiful scenery, there isn’t much that truly stands out or stays with you after finishing the series 🌾.
It works fine as a one-time watch, but due to its rushed pacing and underdeveloped relationships, it’s not a series I’d feel drawn to revisit.

Learn to respect the different ways of love

I truly loved the miniseries. I sincerely believe it effectively portrays, within the production's time constraints, how the diverse paths people take in life, their upbringing, learning experiences, and life events generate countless ways in which attachments and affections arise—attachments and feelings that, under more general or standard conditions, might not be perceived as normal or at least as more natural in terms of their developmental pace. The landscapes and nature also reflect this and the rhythms of life they create, which ties in very closely with the plot.

MDL doesn’t have any cast listed…

…but, I HAVE ascertained that the actor, portraying Lei Zexin , is Wang Ruichen. He’s on IG as ray_chen0309.

You’re welcome! ☺️

In the meantime…

I’m very happy to look at Wang Ruichen for 48 minutes.

I only realized that on you tube, I’m watching the entire series in one go. I didn’t realize it was only 10 min. episodes that made up this one, 58 minute video.

I am not writing a review, because anything I could write would be a spoiler. Just watch it. It’s a beatiful, albeit, far too short, story.

I hope I get to see these wonderful, beautiful actors in more series in the future.

could have been much better

the strongest point of this show is the cast: the male leads have good chemistry, good looking, and visually its pretty (beautiful scenery), id say the first 2 episodes were good and interesting but unfortunately later on it went downhill... scenes started to feel random which make it confusing and it is not the actors fault, the plot execution was not good.
id recommend you to watch it only if you dont have high expectations + if you dont mind bittersweet ending

That was soo damn sad?? those comments were lying

I thought it was a cute, sweet romance but i was wrong. I've watched 3 other dramas from "secret of us" and i think this one was the best. Yes it had flaws. Like they should have hinted the audience that Lei Zexin was at the guesthouse with a motive. That would have kept the audience more curious and engaged instead of confused in ep 5.

I cried ugly in ep 6😭😭. I know it was kinda an open ending but Zexin insisted on natural death than operation. Knowing him he wouldn't choose operation just for Amur. So there's more chances that he died than got the operation and even if he did the doctor said it was risky so that was a bloody sad ending for me.

The acting, the visuals, the story🤌🤌🤌🤌🤌 just soo good. The narration could improve but overall it was a good watch

The scenery was the main character

What a magnificent movie! Everything about it was superb - the scenery was the main actor, but the two MLs were outstanding.
Yuan Zai Qiao is surprisingly inexperienced in acting (or is that just because MDL has nothing much in his bio?)
The beautiful Wang Chen Rui is also inexperienced, however, he shone in this role. I will be looking up his other work.
This story is one that will live with me for quite a while - I think the writer would be very happy with the result - whoever the writer is???

Too incomplete

Unfortunatly there were too many holes in this story, it needed more to make it a good and complete drama.
The music was beautiful and the visuals stunning!

The acting was good and the cemistry and kisses were good.

I will not watch this again. Just because i missed too much story in this drama.

took a turn in episode 3

Overall: I enjoyed the first 2 episodes (though the end of episode 2 seemed sudden), but things took a turn in episode 3 and the story tried to cover too much ground. 6 episodes about 10 minutes each. Aired on Secret of Us YouTube channel https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PL7BSona1dmx6MOq-2_V50NJrjuUGS-UjO&si=h06-k6G1Bz0RiX3k

Content Warnings: dub/non con kiss, sexual assault, past deaths mentioned, manipulation

What I Liked
- vistas
- visuals

Room For Improvement
- started with a flash forward and then to the present
- one guy seemed completely non interested and then after the sexual assault in the tent they were suddenly soulmates???
- too many story threads, should not have introduced the mom/terminal illness

Ending Spoiler: they reunite but 1 guy appears to have a terminal illness

Set your expectations. Yes, the show has flaws. But NO, that doesn't make it bad.

If you go to a restaurant and just order a salad, you can't expect it to fill you up like a full meal would. If you buy a pair of gold earrings for $5, you can't expect it to be made of real gold.

I watched this knowing that the total run time would be around an hour (MDL said it had 6 10-min. eps), so I didn't expect the story to be fleshed out in the same way as in shows with longer run times. Most BLs deemed worth watching by netizens are typically 10-12 episodes long (sometimes longer!), with each episode running for about an hour (again, sometimes longer!), which means that I'd need a whole day in order to binge watch one series. Since I have a life outside of BLs 😅, I would sometimes end up speeding through the longer shows and just stopping for scenes that I find interesting.

Awakening the Steppe gave me the scenes that I'd usually stop for --- the initial context, the sweet moments between the MLs, the conflict, and the resolution --- without the need to speed watch, and it has the added bonus of being visually appealing (the actors, the scenery, the lighting --- I could rewatch this on mute and still derive satisfaction from it 😆). That said, I DO have a few complaints:

- I have no issues with how quickly the MLs seemed to develop feelings for each other. I actually know people IRL who've fallen harder faster 😅. But I do wish that they'd given us a better buildup leading to the emotional payoff. Even a short montage of daily interactions showing an increasing tension between the MLs would have worked, and it would've helped me understand how much time had already passed within the story without adding too much to the show's run time.

- I have a dog and 2 cats, so I can understand the conflict, but I feel like the dialogue didn't expound on it well enough, so it might feel superficial to those who can't relate to the heartbreak of losing a fur baby.

- If in earlier episodes Wang Chen Rui's acting had hinted at a hidden agenda, that conflict might have felt less like it was coming out of left field.

- The introduction of the Mom did nothing to move the story forward. Yes, it just took up 2 mins., but those 2 mins. could've been used to patch up some of the gaps in the story.

No, this won't go down in history as one of the great BL shows of our time. Yes, the writing could use some improvement. But no, I wouldn't consider it as bad either, especially since it didn't have the audacity to waste an entire day of my life (hi again Flirt Milk 😠).

Someone Check On The People Working For "Secret Of Us"

Awakening the Steppe really made me question what kind of emotional phase the people behind these projects are going through. After watching The Heart of Tsukuyomi, Until We Drown, and now this, it genuinely feels like someone at Secret of Us (or whoever is in charge) is not okay. Why does everything need to end in sadness or emotional damage? Out of all their short series, this one is easily the weakest. The story is oddly structured, lacks depth, and throws information at you so fast it feels like it’s trying to seem meaningful rather than actually being meaningful. The only truly special thing here is the scenery. Honestly, the moment I saw it, I was sold. Quiet, open, peaceful, absolutely somewhere I’d love to disappear to. Visually, this series does the most. Narratively, not so much. The chemistry is… questionable. It’s not nonexistent, but it’s definitely not convincing. The way the characters fall in “love” feels rushed and unrealistic, and the kissing scenes honestly look more like they’re wrestling than connecting. Maybe it’s supposed to be passion, maybe it’s lack of chemistry, maybe it’s both. But I simply cannot buy someone being head over heels for a complete stranger they met a day ago, especially when the foundation of that connection makes zero sense. Which is a shame, because this story had potential. With that setting alone, it could’ve been something really memorable. Instead, the script feels like a fever dream. And just to really seal the deal, they throw in a terminal illness at the end. Of course they do. Then we get a dramatic return on a horse, which left me sitting there wondering, is this symbolic? Is he gonna die? Is he gonna heal? Is the horse a metaphor? No idea. And obviously I’ll never know. Overall, it’s not terrible, but it’s not strong either. I’m officially exhausted by sad endings and last-minute tragedy. Please, I am begging, let one of these stories end without emotional whiplash.

Overall: 7/10
