Best BL series of this year

I just finished watching Double Helix, and honestly, this has become one of the best BL series I’ve ever seen.

Was it toxic at times? Absolutely. But that’s exactly what made it feel real.

What I loved most about this series is that it didn’t try to sell us a fantasy version of life where everyone is accepting, every relationship is perfect, and love magically fixes everything. Instead, it tackled real issues that so many people face every day—homophobia from family members, mental health struggles, bipolar disorder, heartbreak, trauma, and the complicated reality of loving someone when life keeps getting in the way.

Not every parent is supportive when their child comes out. Not every relationship is smooth. Sometimes people break up, make mistakes, hurt each other, grow apart, and find their way back together years later. Double Helix wasn’t afraid to show those uncomfortable truths, and that’s what made it so powerful.

And can we talk about the acting?

Ayden and Elio absolutely delivered. Every cry, every breakdown, every moment of pain, love, anger, and vulnerability felt authentic. I wasn’t watching actors perform I felt like I was watching real people living through these experiences. The emotional scenes hit hard because they were portrayed with so much honesty and depth.

I laughed with them, cried with them, got frustrated with them, and celebrated with them. That’s the mark of truly great acting and storytelling.

The chemistry between these two was incredible, and I genuinely hope we get to see them partnered together in more projects. They have gained a lifelong supporter in me.

Double Helix reminded me that love isn’t always pretty, life isn’t always fair, and relationships aren’t always simple but that’s exactly what makes them meaningful.

Beautifully written. Beautifully acted. Beautifully human.

? Lu Feng Wasn't the Villain Everyone Thinks He Was

Honestly, I think a lot of people watch Double Helix and immediately label Lu Feng as the most toxic or delusional character in the drama. But very few people stop to ask why he became that way in the first place. Imagine being deeply in love with someone like Cheng Yichen, who constantly struggles to stand up for your relationship and often allows his family, especially his younger brother, to influence his decisions. That already shows that he doesn't have much control over his own life or relationship. Because of that, Lu Feng is always left fighting alone, which is one of the main reasons he ends up looking obsessed or delusional to everyone around him. Yes, later in the story we learn that he develops psychological issues, but when you're constantly fighting for a love that the other person isn't strong enough to protect alongside you, it's easy to understand how someone can slowly lose themselves. That doesn't excuse all of Lu Feng's actions, but it does explain them. Overall, Double Helix is a very interesting drama that explores love, obsession, family pressure, and emotional damage in a way that keeps you invested from beginning to end. For me, it's a solid 10/10. ⭐️✨

HUGE THANK FOR THE HAPPY ENDING

This became one of the best C-dramas/Boy’s Love series of 2026 that I’ve ever watched. Watching this drama finally ended my anxiety. The storyline is full of challenges: there’s joy, sadness, hatred, and that’s just the nature of life. There’s always sweetness and bitterness that we have to endure. Thank you so much, Ayden, Lusi, Faxuan, Hejia, and all the actors involved. You all gave your best, and it really showed to everyone who watched this drama. And another huge thank you for giving us a happy ending.
One more thing: Jiage Li’s cover of the OST A Love Song Nobody Cares About (没人在乎的情歌) for this drama never disappoints... just like his song "Degenerate" (沦陷), the OST from A Round Trip to Love (双程), the earlier version of this drama. I love it so much!

I mean first wat ran into my mind was they portraying stolkhom syndrome but a much sweeter version of it.... I mean like the chemistry of the two just is wow ,I was rooting for em at the same time I be hating the top yet still want to see their cute moments..must watch but it's filled with butterfly moments Nd toxicity Nd triggering moments for some who are sensitive...

The most cowardly and pathetic character of all time

Double Helix achieved a feat I haven't seen in a long time: creating a boring protagonist with a "poor me" syndrome who spends the entire series lamenting, crying, and moping around.

It becomes truly impossible to root for the main couple when Yi Chen spends the whole plot making one stupid decision after another.

The story has potential and is captivating, but the problem is a lack of editing and a lack of vision from the series' writer and director in condensing the story into an engaging narrative, cutting the excesses, and better balancing the emotions conveyed in the scenes.

The series has countless time jumps at key moments that could have been used to develop the characters, and this takes a tremendous amount of weight away from the series.

The number of times they break up, fight or have someone or something appear to separate them becomes boring and anticlimactic.

At times, the series becomes so rigid and dense that the plot drags. It’s 40 minutes of screaming, characters crying, musical sequences with someone making a pitiful face in the rain, and so on.

I understand that the series tried to adapt their entire story but it was unnecessary. At a certain point, it feels like they are just inventing tragedies and problems so the series can have a few more episodes.

And that makes the ending unbearable. The entire plotline regarding Lu Feng's bipolar disorder is excellent, had it been better developed rather than shoved into the final episode.

There are great points in the series: the secondary couple is excellent—but they are sidelined and don't get the spotlight or the development they need—, the acting are great, the cinematography is beautiful, and the chemistry between the actors is undeniable.

But it lacked direction, editing, and the ability to balance the series with more interesting characters and a more dynamic plot that treated mental health issues with greater seriousness.

A good BL that gets lost within its own plot.

What makes Double Helix exceptional isn't that it tells a heartbreaking love story. It's that it refuses to simplify the people living through it.

So many dramas are built around clear heroes, obvious villains, and conflicts that can be solved once the truth comes out. Double Helix chooses a far more difficult path. It presents characters who are shaped by fear, loyalty, guilt, pride, and love, then allows those emotions to collide without ever insisting that one perspective is completely right or another completely wrong. That complexity is what kept me invested from beginning to end.

I loved how every major decision felt like the inevitable result of everything the characters had experienced. Nothing exists purely for dramatic effect. Every painful choice has emotional roots that stretch back years, making the story feel incredibly cohesive. Instead of asking, "Why would they do that?" I found myself asking, "Given everything they've lived through, how could they believe there was any other choice?" That's a rare achievement in character writing.

The series also understands that love doesn't exist in isolation. It's constantly influenced by family, obligation, personal identity, unresolved grief, and the beliefs we develop while growing up. The romance isn't separated from those forces. It's shaped by them. Watching Lu Feng and Cheng Yichen navigate feelings that were genuine but constantly filtered through fear and misunderstanding made their relationship feel painfully authentic.

What impressed me most was the drama's willingness to leave emotional space for the audience. It doesn't rush to explain every motivation or resolve every contradiction. Instead, it trusts us to notice patterns, to interpret silences, and to understand that people often communicate through the things they cannot bring themselves to say. That restraint made the emotional payoff far more rewarding than if everything had been explicitly spelled out.

I also appreciated that the story never confuses redemption with forgetting. Characters are allowed to grow, but growth doesn't erase the consequences of their past actions. Trust remains fragile, emotional scars remain visible, and forgiveness is portrayed as something that must be earned rather than expected. That honesty gives the drama a level of emotional maturity that I rarely find in romance series.

By the time I finished, I realized Double Helix wasn't trying to tell me what love should look like. It was exploring how love changes when imperfect people bring all of their fears, flaws, and histories into a relationship. That made the story feel less like a fantasy and more like an honest reflection of human nature.

For me, this is what truly great storytelling looks like. It doesn't demand sympathy. It earns understanding. It doesn't rely on spectacle. It relies on beautifully observed human behaviour. And it leaves you thinking long after the final episode because its questions don't have easy answers. That's exactly why Double Helix is a 10/10 for me.

I will forever remember this series

I have been on a BL slump for a very long time before this was dropped. I couldn't even find anything to watch. And when it aired,I fell in love with this show.
I know it has some very problematic things,but aside those it was a lovely watch. The character Lu Feng showed so many emotions that I find other actors actings bland compared to his. I just loved loved loved ayden's acting. The story wasn't unique,but they made it unique with their acting and chemistry. Elio was good too.

All things aside,it leaves behind a good bittersweet feeling. I will probably rewatch it many more times and I already have. Did I mention it made me feel many things? I loved loved LOVED it. Hopefully they will act in another bl together.
