At a Certain Point, This Shouldn't Even Be Considered a "Toxic Relationship"
I'll try to be as objective as possible when writing this review but I gotta admit it was a hard one to watch. And I'll cut it short because tbf there is not much to say about this series:(This review contains heavy spoilers bear that in mind!!)
I'm gonna start with the script bc that's the only thing we should talk about this series. This story was so bad that after one point I was like "What am I watching ? Why am I watching This ?". Even from the beginning, the extensive homophobia literally made my blood run cold. Yes, it is actually very common thing to happen in real life to most of us Queers; but on the other hand as the events develop, the amount of choices that have been made regarding the homophobia they encountered is so bitter to watch and from my point of wiew, nearly unacceptable. Doen't matter how much you love your parents/friends/family, a person should always choose themselves if it comes to either them or yourself. I know saying this may sound selfish or inconsiderate, but as someone who encountered something very similar to this, I truly believe this is the only healthy choice for both parties.
Then the second main subject of this show comes before us: Obsession to the point of a person loses their mind. Even now as I am writing this review, it still sounds insane. literally insane. After the mother of Yi Chen dies, our character cuts off his communication with his brother, decides to stay married to the woman he does not love and goes into hiding. I was okay with all these decisions. Then there is a time jump of 5 years and we see the couple moved on, healed and ready to divorce to build a better life which was sweet. But then, (this is the moment this show goes to down hill . Or may I say, sorry for my vulgar language, straight up bullshit) our masochistic Lead Yi Chen decides to contact his Ex-boyfriend Lu Feng who caused so much pain to him before. And then after encountering him, he becomes a captive of his lunatic ex. Watching those episodes was very hard I have to tell. I couldn't watch some of the "sex" scenes because of how painful it is. The show doesn't say how long Yi Chen was captured (I think in one scene Yi Chens's brother and his bf talks about how they couldn't find him for a couple of months but I am not sure what events that time period contains) but we could tell it was quite long because by the end of it, the actor literally looked like he lost half of his weight.
Anyways, after everything he's been through, Yi Chen decides to be with Lu Feng once again which while I was watching that scene, I audibly laughed. that moment, I lost my very little remaining sympathy that I had towards Yi Chen. Yes, on the last episode we learn why Lu Feng acted this way and I admit discovering his condition softens some things a little but for me the main issue was not him but how Yi Chen kept coming back to Lu Feng. This is not love. The only sick one was not Lu Feng. Seeing a person wasted away like this was very sad. I wanted to talk about how the story was written badly in and on itself rather than pointing out its illogical and/or inconsistent sides because this story is very bitter and moving and I felt it should be approached emotionally to talk about it. Some of you may find this boring or think this is not a review and I respect that. I am avare that my review looks like it goes over the story mixed with my comments and I am sorry for that but as I just said, I didn't feel right to approach this any other way.
I have no comments on the music. I personally not a fan of how chinese BLs uses music but it was okay for me for this piece. The production quality was top notch. The actors literally carried everything and made this story watchable. That's all I'm gonna say about this show I think. I don't know if it's stupid to put this at the end of the review, but people who struggle with mild mental illness should NOT watch this series.
PS: I know I said I'll cut it short at the beginning but ended up writing a whole ass essay so I'm sorry lol please bear it with me.

May Lu Feng kind of love never find me
Oh boy where do I even begin?I knew that boy was trouble when he walked in
Like “Fan Xiao from Ti my shore ” kind of trouble
Did I mention this story it’s 80-% similar to the manhwa full circle ?
If you are faint of heart and easily triggered don’t watch this. This show doesn’t do anything unique
It’s the same tired trope of an obsessive abuser hell bent on destroying the mc’s life all in the name of love. Lu Feng is unapologetic in his narcissism. He thinks just because he loves Xiaocheng then Xiaocheng must love him and want to be with him no matter what. Guy lacks empathy, anyone can go to hell including his own family as long as he has Xiaocheng, who clearly can’t stand his psychotic narcissistic ass.
BIG SPOILER!!!!!!!
When Xiaocheng is in coma, Lu Feng literally says”this is good, you lying down here quietly, that way you can’t go anywhere, you can’t leave me, this way it feels like you belong to me completely”
That says a lot
This man is sick
May this kind of man and lover never find me
In case I forgot to mention it , there are multiple scenes of SA. Which are never addressed btw because how else will we know how much Lu Feng loves Xiao Cheng.
I tend to rate Chinese bls slightly higher because I love Mandarin, otherwise if this was a Thai Bl best believe I would have given it 2 stars,

A Badly Written Mess with Superficial Dark 'Romance'
This is a very poorly made series. I shudder when people compare it to other Chinese dark romances because it doesn't come close at all. It's extremely shallow, illogical, and superficial, and most importantly, it's not even a romance. These characters don't love each other, and I don't mean it in "they hurt each other too much" kind of way. No, they truly, genuinely do not love each other. Throughout the series, they hold no meaningful conversations. They don't get to know each other. Until the end, you have no idea what they are supposed to like about each other because it's never shown.
Lu Feng isn't interested in Yichen's thoughts or feelings. He just wants them to be in a relationship: that's where his obsession starts and ends. He's not interested in the person himself, in his worries, his hopes, his values; on the contrary, he shows time and time again that he doesn't know or understand him. In the second half of the show, he blames him for being a gold digger. Like, seriously blaming him and punishing him for it even though there is zero reason to think that. If he doesn't know even this much about his supposed great love years later, what can I say?..
Yichen also doesn't love Lu Feng. He invests precisely 0 effort in preserving or maintaining this relationship. He bends where the wind blows, and in most cases, he bends for everyone and away from Lu Feng. He always, always puts everyone and everything else above him even though there are a million other solutions that a loving, somewhat intelligent person would have instantly come up with. He's so spineless that a stranger could take him from his house, put him in the car, and tell him they are going to another country, and he'll just say "okay" meekly with an empty, drugged-out look. And if you think it's because he's been badly broken: no, not at all. He's like this from E1.
From E1, these characters act inconsistently and make illogical choices. Their problems with miscommunication cannot be treated seriously because they are overblown to an extreme extent. Yeah, I get it, miscommunication is a popular trope, but you still need to adapt it smartly. There is nothing smart about writing in Double Helix. The characters don't talk about the most basic and obvious things just because the plot needs it.
There is no logic or psychology here in general. You have the oddest situations occurring, like one character allegedly trying to commit suicide and both characters forgetting about it in the very next scene, or a brother deciding to abandon his hurt brother with a man they haven't known long for 5+ years for the weakest reason of hiding, and then 'hiding' by working in a publicly known wife's company. Or a kidnapper inviting the powerful wife of the kidnapped to his place to show her abused husband to her for some reason, and her just so happening to carry a gun even though she didn't know the kidnapping took place. And then the very loving brothers reuniting after years like some random schoolmates with no emotional ties between them. Characters will appear when it's convenient and disappear when their presence is not convenient - and it happens all the time. It's a big annoying mess, just flashes of scenes with no logical or psychological connection.
The kindapping/abuse part everyone dreaded and kept freaking out over was done very, very poorly. There is just... barely anything happening there. Maybe Yichen gets assaulted, but it's shown very weirdly and he seems to be at least partly into it. Other than this, nothing. For 99% of time, it looks like a middle schooler got put on house arrest. There is no nuance, no psychological breaking, no depiction of how challenging and torturous this was for Yichen to live through; he just keeps eating apathetically as Lu Feng brings people over, never thinks of asking for help, and makes the same face in every situation. This can't be compared to what other red/black flags did to their partners in other dramas, so I never understood why everyone kept calling Lu Feng the king of black flags. He's crazy, that's true, but the biggest problem in their dynamic is a clear lack of love. The abuse itself is superficial as hell, so if you've come looking for dark and gritty stuff that horrifies and fascinates you, and has long-term consequences and a challenging road to redemption, you won't find any of it here.
The music is pretty good; one song in particular has stolen my heart. The acting... honestly, I'm not a fan, although I blame direction and weak script for it first and foremost. There are good scenes, the actors clearly have talent, but a lot of these scenes are very exaggerated, and Yichen's actor is walking around with the same empty expression for a major part of the series, even in situations that don't warrant it. These people deserved a way better script.
It's just old and beaten tropes over old and beaten tropes. These tropes aren't connected or presented well, so it feels like you're watching an outdated parody on quality dark romances. The actors seem absolutely lovely, their BTS are a treasure, but unfortunately, in my opinion, the series is a massive waste of time.

Ok, this is trigerring, very triggering and gets really dark....but damn good despite all that!!!!
Be prepared to be very angry, livid, in fact, fuming and cursing a lot.....but don't you dare miss this!! Great story, acting, script...and wait till episode 5-6, when things get really good. I mean bad...really BAD and gets you hooked!!As the story progressed, with each episode this just gets better and better....but if you have been through homophobia, family opposition and blatant arm-twisting by parents and family, be warned that this will trigger you...BIG TIME.....the bottom line is -these parents, they needed to have died much earlier....BEFORE they ruined everyone's life...and queer people need to find their spine and STOP ruining their own and other people's lives just so that they can be the 'good child' to their monstrous parents, and play the victim of being the martyr. Ok, rant done, this is good...damn good...don't miss it
BL-needle Score: 6. It has a lot of men loving men, but not really BL-ishq, if you know what I mean
Started out uber cute, the ML looking super handsome, doting on the MC, and bordering on obsessive-possessive.. the super red-flag-ey, won't listen to no -kind ...just when they find each other, their love story quickly veers towards a complete mess and heartbreak, with families, money, reputation and homophobia ruining everything....separating them, across oceans, and timelines...and just when you think the bish parents, and entitled, opportunistic, younger bro can't be any worse...SURPRISE....the protagonist himself sabotages everything by walking away, getting married and completely blindsiding the one person who loved him against everything, and through everything.
At Episode 8 right now when things have just started to turn good, the wronged lover is finally seeming to have his time...though I get a feeling that Lu Feng will eventually melt and succumb to this undying love for Cheng Yi...I wish he takes till the very last moment to do so though...because if I was Lu Feng, I would rub it in harder...much harder
Ep 9 DAMN!!! This has gone absolutely pitch dark now.....beyond toxic....the devil in Lu Feng is unleashed...all that anger, jealousy, repression, sense of betrayal, has made him into another person altogether :(
There was a movie on the same book in 2016, which has rave reviews. While I haven't watched that one, I am definitely glued on with this show. As I already said, Damn Good!!
What are you waiting for...Go Watch!!

“you really have no selfrespect”
First, let me quote a comment I wrote while watching this shit:I'm losing my shit rn WHAT THE F*CK WAS THAT. I'm so pised they made him the biggest black flag I have ever seen (it started so good 😭😭). 9 ep made me feel really uncomfortable and speechless. that was not what I was expecting. why does they romanticize kidnapping and violence... it's to messy even for me. atp they shouldn't end up together.
cheng yi chen character was flat, he had no personality, barely said anything about his emotions, neither he shown them with an expression. We know nothing about how he feels or what his attitude towards this whole situation is. Lu Feng manipulates him to such an extent that he doesn't mind being treated badly. he is literally his victim.
Would have dropped it if I hadn’t gotten so far.
the quote - “you really have no selfrespect” - says it all
I don't like the way Lu Feng’s disease was presented and the fact that they had been saying that he recovered - it’s not the kind of illness that can be cured.
On the plus side, the second couple was nice to watch I really liked them.
it had potential but was waisted by making Lu Feng the worst black flag and a villain.
overall: wouldn't recommend

Trigger Warning/ Triggering
Y'all, Lu Feng needs to get popped in his mouth. Holy hell. I can not STAND him. 😭 He's a little psychotic demon. Atrocious. Why is he so damn aggressive??Oh and Cheng Yi Chen? He is SOOO aggressively spineless and is too comfortable being a doormat. Really wish he'd find his brain and get some standards.
The more Cheng Yi Chen 'tolerated' from Lu Feng, the angrier I got. Show had me so livid. How is he going to look like absolute crap and take a bully for the person responsible for the terrible state he's in.
"Why do you always want to leave me?" My guy, do somw self-reflecting. My word
Lu Feng treated his mom and brother like shit. What does Yi Chen do? He betrays them for said that man. Just to keep being treated like trash! Like hello, are you good?
They all need to learn how to stand tf up and walk away from toxic relationships.

why r yall constantly defending lu feng when he’s a textbook narcissist
If I read one more comment about how the little brother is annoying and how he’s destroyed his brothers relationship I’m gonna lose it. I’d like to gently remind everyone that lu feng as opposed to yu chen is older and *should* be emotionally and mentally more mature but instead chooses to act like a 4 year old whenever a conflict occurs. Not only is he lacking any empathy or critical thinking skills but also he likes do mistreat and deliberately hurt the person he claims to love. It’s come to a point where his behaviour is so utterly pathetic that I dislike his character even more then all of the homophobic parents together. And let me tell you I’ve watched a few dramas and I have never felt that way before. I’ve never even written a review before but my hate for this fictional man has reached a point where I’m gonna implode if I don’t write it down. That being said I don’t condemn people that enjoy the drama, like or defend lu feng (or only just a little bit). I understand that red and black flag characters can be fun to watch. BUT I need the people to lose the „I can fix him“ or the „He’s just misunderstood“ mentality regarding really problematic, toxic men. Not only because of the whole misogyny and patriarchy thingy but also just because I find it really annoying. Thank you and good night. Was this review helpful to you?
From Cute Green Flag to Toxic Black Flag The Best BL of 2026!
I was completely hooked from the very first episode. After watching more than 500+ BLs, I can honestly say this is one of the best I’ve ever seen. It grabbed me so deeply that I ended up rewatching it three times in a row because every scene pulled me in even more and left me wanting more. So rarely do I ever set alarms for dramas, but I was putting my alarm on for 10 PM every Friday and Saturday just to catch the new episodes the moment they came out. Then during the week, I would rewatch them all over again. That’s how addicted I became to this series. One of the best remakes ever made.Chinese BLs really know how to create emotional and addictive stories without making everything feel overly cheesy. What made Yichen and Lufeng stand out to me immediately was that their relationship was not the typical soft and natural romance you see all the time. At the beginning, their relationship felt obsessive, possessive, intense, and emotionally consuming, and honestly that is exactly what made it so addictive to watch. Every interaction between them carried tension and strong emotions, making their connection feel impossible to ignore.
The flashbacks showing how they first met were done beautifully and made their bond feel even deeper over time. Their chemistry is incredible and every scene together feels charged with emotion. The acting is amazing too. Yichen is soft, innocent, and emotional while Lufeng is obsessive, possessive, protective, controlling, and confident. Both actors completely brought their characters to life.
What makes this story stand out is how emotional and heartfelt it feels underneath all the intensity. From high school classmates to lovers separated by family expectations and distance, every part of their journey feels painful yet beautiful. Knowing Lufeng was forced to stay overseas for years while Yichen tried to continue his life made every reunion scene even more emotional.
I cried during the ring exchange scene in episode 2 because it felt so genuine and emotional. Yichen being the first to say “I love you” even though he fell later made the moment even more powerful. When he cried, I cried too because the emotions felt so real through the screen.
Another heartbreaking scene was when Yichen begged his brother for a chance to see Lufeng again while, at the same time, Lufeng kept writing letters and trying everything possible to reunite with him. Even after years apart, their feelings for each other never changed, and you can truly feel how deep their connection is.
What I love most is that this drama is not only about romance. It is also about timing, sacrifice, family pressure, fate, and fighting for the person you truly love. Every episode balances tenderness, obsession, heartbreak, and longing perfectly, making it impossible to stop watching.
This show truly has everything: an amazing plot, emotional storytelling, strong chemistry, beautiful cinematography, and great music. Every episode feels memorable and meaningful.
Ayden is an incredible actor!
Some dramas fade from memory after a while, but this feels like the kind of story that will stay with me for a long time and always be worth rewatching.
Honestly, this is the best BL dramas of 2026 for me and definitely a masterpiece.

For a VERY specific audience, do not expect logic or maturity
The experience of watching this while it was on-going is genuinely one in a million. I could not keep up with the discussions of characters being irredeemable one week and then being redeemed the next, somehow. This show had a LOT of flaws, but goddamn does it keep you hooked. The first few episodes are filmed in such a close camera lens and shots that it genuinely feels a bit obsessive and personal, later on you understand why. The characters were mostly one dimensional, but Lu Feng, what a character. Watching the show just to see what he does next became the new motivation for me honestly. The acting was amazing from him and he did NOT hold back.
Xiao Chen...I wish he was braver.
Anyways GREAT ost ! Overall good watch.

One of The Best Remakes Ever!
With the first few episodes Double Helix is already exceeding my expectations. As a remake of A Round Trip to Love, it feels incredibly polished. Each scene is well-edited with beautiful transitions of the story that lets you bond and reason with the characters and story, the cinematography is superb. You can tell the production value is high even the OST and dubbing are decently good to me.The story structure is very smart; it starts with their present day reunion and then moves into a flashback of their university days. The pacing is perfect by the end of episode two, the backstory is clear and easy to follow without feeling choppy.
What I love most is how natural it feels. The supporting cast, like the roommates, adds a nice "slice of life" touch, you get to understand their story and bond with them in every detail you live each side's point of view which makes me feel more emotionally tied and invested. The acting from the leads is very good chemistry over the top, and even the side characters are played well which adds depth to the world.
When it comes to the characters development you can really feel it especially the innocence of their early relationship, and watching Lu Feng’s shift into a "protector" role development feels earned rather than sudden. While the original story is known for being quite dark and tragic, this version is starting off with a lot of heart can't wait for the full thing. I’ll be updating this as we go, but for now, it’s a must-watch!
TW (spoiler): this series contains a lot of triggers so check out the tags under the synopsis if you need.

Where do I find a Qin Lang
Stop comparing Lu Feng to Fan Xiao. One is a desperate black flag, the other is a menaceCan we please banish the TikTok and X timelines from comparing Lu Feng to Fan Xiao from *To My Shore*? It is literally apples to oranges.
Fan Xiao was an absolute menace to society a calculated, manipulative playboy who wrecked lives for sport and carried unadulterated, toxic, chaotic energy from Episode 1 to the finale.
Lu Feng on the other hand? Yeah, he’s a certified black flag, who needs serious therapy, but his toxicity comes from a place of desperate, unhinged trauma and total obsession. He isn't playing a game; he’s just completely lost his sanity over Xiao Chen. Lu Feng doesn’t even touch the baseline level of malice Fan Xiao possessed.
People in the comments are dragging Xiao Chen for being passive and making frustrating choices, but they are completely missing the plot. His external environment is literally a chokehold.
He didn’t just "choose" to walk away or enter a sham marriage; he was completely crushed by family expectations, societal judgment, and a mountain of guilt. The show does a phenomenal job of showing how a person’s spirit gets entirely dismantled by their circumstances. It feels brutally, heartbreakingly real. He isn't a red flag; he’s a victim of a system designed to break him.
Xiao Chen’s Mom Deserves Her Own Antagonist Arc
We need to talk about that episode. The sheer, unadulterated frustration I felt watching Xiao Chen’s mom weaponise her failing health to manipulate him was insane.
She didn't just guilt-trip him; she held a masterclass in emotional terrorism. Using your last dying breaths to lock your son in a heteronormative closet and make him feel responsible for your illness? Absolutely wild, toxic behaviour. She is the real villain of this story, period.
Yes, 90% of their problems could have been solved if they had sat down and used their words like functioning adults. Xiao Chen can’t communicate to save his life, and Lu Feng communicates so aggressively that he destroys everything in his path.
But honestly? What is the actual point of a drama without the drama? This is a Lan Lin adaptation (*A Round Trip to Love* universe)—if they had a healthy, mature conversation in Episode 3, the show would be a 20-minute short film. We signed up for the angsty, devastating, tragic trainwreck, and *Double Helix* delivers exactly that.
The Verdict:
The acting is top-tier (Ayden Sng and Lyu Sitong have insane chemistry), the pacing is a massive upgrade from the 2016 movies, and it seamlessly shifts from university romance to family horror.
