I don't recommend this series at all

The characters were portrayed exceptionally well. I felt exactly what the audience was supposed to feel toward each character—anger, sympathy, happiness, and frustration—which shows how strong the performances were. The old actors, in particular, did an excellent job. I also appreciated how the actors' appearances changed with each time jump. It made the passage of time feel convincing and helped sell the story's decade-long timeline.

Because the story spans more than ten years, the drama often feels much longer than its 12 episodes. At times, it even feels like multiple seasons compressed into one. A conflict appears, the characters resolve it, and then another major conflict immediately takes its place. While this keeps the story moving, it also makes the narrative feel repetitive and somewhat exhausting.

The resolution is one of the show's weakest aspects. Instead of resolving conflicts through meaningful character growth or confrontation, the story often removes its antagonists by killing them. It feels less like the characters overcome their problems and more like the writers simply eliminate them. While this works for external villains, it creates a problem when the final conflict shifts toward the protagonist's psychological struggles.

I actually liked how the series gradually built up the protagonist's mental health issues. Looking back, the signs were already present in the very first episode. However, I don't think the execution was successful. The show ends up treating the mental illness almost like another antagonist to be defeated. Unlike the previous villains, though, mental illness cannot simply be "killed" or removed, making the ending feel less satisfying.

Another issue I had was how the series seemed to attribute many of the protagonist's toxic behaviors to his mental illness. Rather than holding him accountable and allowing him to grow, it sometimes feels as though the story uses his condition to justify his actions. As a result, his character development feels incomplete, since meaningful personal change is often replaced with explanation instead of accountability.

I also wasn't a fan of how the supporting cast changed with nearly every time jump. Each new stage of the protagonists' lives introduces an entirely new circle of friends while discarding the previous one. This constant reset made it difficult to become attached to the supporting characters and further contributed to the feeling that I was watching several different seasons instead of a single continuous series.

Overall, Double Helix features excellent performances, convincing time progression, and emotionally engaging characters. However, its repetitive conflict structure, reliance on killing antagonists to resolve problems, inconsistent handling of mental health, and constantly changing supporting cast prevent it from reaching its full potential.

What the hell was that?

Lu Feng (Ayden Sng) and Xiao Cheng (Lu Si Tong) met in high school and later began a relationship in college. However, due to various setbacks and family issues, they were forced to part ways. Years later, they reunite as boss and employee, and then embark on the journey that will lead them to be together.
I really wanted to understand at what point this series lost its way.
I don’t even know where to start when talking about this show, because it was the story of a relationship built over years that just started to fall apart on its own. Things were going well until around episode 6, then Lu Feng GOES CRAZY, and that was it. He’s emotionally unstable, and Xiao is a poor guy who apparently doesn’t have a shred of self-respect, he was abused, held captive, and treated like a doormat and in the end, I’m supposed to understand because he’s bipolar. I won’t get into how bipolar disorder was portrayed because I don’t think it’s relevant. The two clearly have a messed-up emotional codependency, and nobody does anything about it. HE ALMOST LEFT HIS BROTHER PARAPLEGIC, God only knows what would’ve happened to him if Qin Lang hadn’t had money.
The brother and the brother-in-law (who are actually a DECENT couple) tried to warn them, and the plot tried to cast them as villains, everything about this shit is wrong. What exactly was the moral of the story in the end? About how couples should support each other through hard times? Then at the end, they want us to forget the LITERALLY criminal acts that took place and all the mental torture, but in the end Lu Feng is in love with him, so it’s all good.
Lu Feng’s anger is justifiable to a certain extent, he gave up everything for Xiao, and at first he prioritized his own unhappiness over his mother’s, but his outburst isn’t justifiable: pushing the guy down the stairs. THAT’S WHAT STRESSES ME OUT
I don’t know how to critique this series, it just annoyed and stressed me out. It’s well-produced, with good shots, good angles, and flawless acting. BUT IT’S NOT WORTH IT
I stuck with it for the secondary couple, who, if you add up all their screen time, don’t even total 15 minutes, but we get attached to the little details.

Life isn't always a bed of roses. I felt sorry for Lu Feng. His love was genuine but due to the state of his mind his love for Xiao Chen
bordered on obsession. Xiao Chen was the opposite he messed with lu chengs brain and the pairing became toxic. Lu Feng couldn't give more than he did to keep Xiao Chen and the beatings he endured by his father proved his love went deep. Xiao Chen to me couldn't make up his mind how he felt about Lu Feng.
Getting wed to a woman was heartbreaking
for Lu Feng. Xiao married to make his mom happy. If your deeply in love you don't do that to hurt someone you really love.His mother should be ashamed the way she treated her boys. Well after all the angst and trauma in the end everything turned out happy.. Xiao

Phenomenal Acting Trapped in a Somewhat Flawed Story

I have been into BL for 20 years so I have seen and read endless stories by this point. I also want to start by saying I looked forward to each episode coming out during the original 6 week airing period while I was recovering from a very invasive surgery.

I really believe had the director & editor listened to more of Ayden and Elio's (Lyu Sitong) inputs that it would have even higher ratings. During their watch reviews of the episodes they mention several times scenes being done differently than they would have wanted. I know many outstanding shots Elio did were taken out and I really think they would have added more to the final storyline. This would have truly shown people what a fantastic actor he is, I feel it almost robs him of letting people see him shine. I also wish they gave him a different hairstyle and clothes as they didn't suit him at all. He even mentioned the wigs being awful to wear and the clothes were too big on him.

I watched every episode and often go back to specific parts that I enjoy. The chemistry between Ayden and Elio is undeniable and their kissing scenes are some of the best I have ever seen. From around episode 9, it became much harder for me to watch and around 11-12 it felt incredibly disjointed in places. I believe it needed a few more episodes to make the story flow more smoothly and not feel as rushed. As its over a course of ten years and a lot happens between Yichen and Lu feng.

Considering the original story the show is based off of it was certainly toned down a lot.. but I also stopped enjoying toxic storylines a long time ago. I don't condone any of the horrible behaviors and I certainly didn't pick sides at any point. I know its a dark romance so I have to be realistic regarding the extremely dark themes: The story explores deep psychological obsession, forced confinement, severe family betrayal, trauma, and non-consensual dynamics.

They all seemed petty at times where just being honest would have brought them closer together rather than hurting one another. I understand its angst based but I am too old for constant miscommunication especially when it can be solved in a single discussion. I absolutely hated the parents as it really was their disdain and homophobic beliefs that caused endless pain and grief. Lu feng's father was incredibly abusive, horrible and when he died I felt glad he couldn't hit Lu feng anymore.

I am glad they showed a main character dealing with bipolar disorder, if you rewatch the show a second time you will notice there are signs from the start. Lu feng getting treatment as well as seeing a therapist was important and we need more stories that show characters dealing with their mental health. However, I dont know if framing severe domestic abuse and control through a bipolar diagnosis was handled realistically or effectively by the writers.

I wish Ayden could have used his voice for the series and not be dubbed over. I understand its incredibly common in Chinese productions and they mainly did it because of the characters background as a wealthy mainland Chinese heir. Yet, I feel his own voice would have delivered a deeper, more vulnerable weight to his scenes. Because Ayden is Singaporean his accent was apparently too noticeable when speaking mandarin.

The music is great, I frequently listen to the soundtracks still months after the show and found they picked the perfect songs for each scene. I also loved that Ayden's voice was shown in solo tracks and duets, even though his voice was dubbed for the show.

In the end I am really glad the show happened because it brought Ayden and Elio more job opportunities and has shown their wonderful acting abilities. I do regret during and after the show, they have had to deal with their BTS content and personal information being sold & released without permission to toxic people who try and use it against them. They have been harassed, mobbed, stalked and insulted a lot which is just disgusting. They are such kind people who are sincere and love their fanbase (little pillows) a lot.

I would say to anyone questioning to please give the show a chance! It might not be everyone's cup of tea but there are many moments I enjoyed and I never would have realized had I not watched the show how beautiful & adorable Ayden and Elio's real life bond is. I hope they can work together on another production soon that really lets both of them showcase their talents.

It began well but fell terribly.

I thought Lu Feng's character was a green flag until he grew up and constantly pressured sexual interaction on Yi Chen (Xiao Chen). Even when they were studying, the first time Lu Feng initiated, Yi Chen was dubious and so young. Yi Chen wasn't willing one hundred percent. He's new and, agreeably, needs time to process queer fantasies.
However, the way the entire show proceeded to telecast Lu Feng's toxic masculinity and repetitive rape scenes on Yi Chen, where the latter becomes a victim of Stockholm syndrome, made this show super irritating.

To be frank, I felt Yi Chen always looked spaced out. Or as if feeling confused and sometimes nothing at all. His expressions made me not engage.

I didn't understand Yi Chen's brother's character. Although he has hidden the fact of Lu Feng writing a message to Yi Chen and asking to wait for him, he has asked Qin Lang to be his brother's boyfriend out of guilt(?). So that his brother would be happy?
This plotline truly intrigued me with the way the brother evolved from the young, straight foreigner to the rainbow community and became a part of them. Tried my best to engage with the drama he built for his brother, but it felt too toxic to hide given how he once was and still kept certain things unapologetically.
All three had suffered for his dumb act, but perhaps his young age could be given as his excuse in his defense.

Later on, the episodes seemed like a rabbit hole with Lu Feng keep circling and Yi Chen's trust and heart broken once again. Perhaps, once broken, nothing can be revived again fully.

Lu Feng broke Yi Chen's brother's leg and made the latter's mother get a heart attack. Hurt Yi Chen himself too many times. This felt crappy to the point that I didn't understand where the show was leading. Nobody's in the show; no character seemed to have a thought to talk things out, clear things up, or have some self-respect.

The only character that I could like was Qin Lang and his relation with Yi Chen's brother. At least they developed and grew together to be a healthy, understanding couple despite issues.

As though I didn't like the concept of how Lu Feng's whole personality issue—possessive, obsessive, a liar, and a stalker—was nullified/labeled for his health condition, but that was what made sense. He was indeed sick. and deserved SPECIAL HEALTH TREATMENT.

The realest and most satisfactory lines in the whole show:
"After how he treated you, do you have no self-respect?" - Yi Chen's brother to Yi Chen

"If you really love Yichen, can you learn to respect him a little? Haven't you learned your lesson after all these years?" - Qin Lang to Lu Feng

The quality of the show was extremely mesmerizing, but the plot was just meh!

It went on for too long (slight spoilers)

Up to episode 5 it was teally good and positive, they founf their way to each other. From there, everything went downhill.
This show was talk of the town so i had high hopes. And first half was great. After they broke up for the 2nd time, it was almost unwatcahble.
Maybe i cant relate with asian culture but its always annoying how much they care about their parents opinion. That mom was proper drama queen.
And then lu feng became a certified psychopath what seems like all of a sudden with no ryme or reason. He was great in the begining. Plot became very dark and confusing. Him imprisoning other guy (forgot the name) and mentally torturing him didnt make any sense.
Time jumps and time line was too long, this relationship was on and off for over 10 years. Im on ep 8 and im so over them now, get a grip, you're grown men.

What a shame cause the begining was dramatic because nobody suported their relationship but they were great and i really enjoyed their dynamics.

Interesting to pathetic plot

Alright the first episodes were realistic and interesting. Loads and loads of drama, and even though some parts were cringe, they were pretty realistic so i watched it.
But after 7th episode, the story just went overboard.
I was like "what's with the pathetic excuse of a plot" it's like they were trying extra hard to make things worse in the story.
People with weak heart don't watch it. The plot is very dark and i felt it was full of unnecessary grief and all other negative emotions u could name of.
Anyways, i thought it was a waste of time and i could've just avoided feeling all heavy.
But things to be appreciated, the chemistry between the couples are super good. The actors are veryyyyy handsome and attractive and I loved their acting and almost everything..... except the PLOT 😭.

After all obstacles have been overcome hapiness prevails

This was a great drama, a true rollercoaster of emotions. I was mad, but i also cried a few times, it also had a few sweet moments. It's toxic, but in the last two episodes that explains itself, he was so hurt that it litterary made him mentaly ill.
A BL with the most awful parents ever!! And the siblings weren't very nice either and they were also very controlling.
Then put two mains together, one without a backbone and one with a very strong personality and you have a recepi for disaster.
Beautiful visuals and good music.

The mains had great chemistry and good kisses.
The second couple didn't have much chemistry, but that was because the actor that played Cheng Yi Chen, didn't do very good job in acting. And his kisses were so bad! Such a shame because his co actor did great in acting and in kissing.

I recommend watching this!

2 literally crazy people in love

I think this drama was just wayy too toxic for me. I came here after "To My Shore" which also had a black flag but with a really good redemption arc. This one was just pure torture for me. There was just 1 episode where everyone was happy i.e. the trip episode and the rest of the series is filled with toxicity and homophobia.

I absolutely despise Lu Feng and I still don't feel he actually truely loves Yi Cheng but is just obsessed over him. The entire series he just keeps raping him over and over again with no explanation. Ends up ragebaiting all their homophobic parents to the grave and keeps hurting Yi Cheng since ep 1. I'm not sure why people don't see that and just are like oh no Yi Cheng is the bad guy.

But 1 thing I liked was that they didn't normalize it but they showed that Lu Feng was actually mentally ill the whole time.

Coming to the acting it was just 🤌🤌🤌. Especially the scene where Yi Cheng's ex comes to save Yi Cheng from Lu Feng. The hug mixed with fear, anger and confusion and the fact that the audience could see all 3 like damn.

I absolutely loved the 2nd couple. Both He Jia Shu and Fa Xuan Ge❤️❤️❤️❤️ they're adorable. I know the brother kinda messes up in the middle but for me that wasn't exactly a big deal cz that issue was resolved n Lu feng messed up again🙄.

Overall it's good. But 1 time is all i can watch this

Lu Feng Is a Walking Red Flag and I’m Not Complaining

It's such a turn-off for me when a story starts with characters who already know each other and then slowly reveals how they met, so at first I wasn't sure if I wanted to keep watching. But I'm SO glad I didn't give up. 😭❤️

The first few episodes were absolutely lovely — I was literally glued to the screen. Then, somewhere in the middle, the story became much more dramatic, and there were certain parts I didn't really enjoy, especially when Yi Cheng's mother emotionally blackmailed him. That part genuinely destroyed me. 💔

But at the same time... I have to thank that whole situation because it led to the marriage issue and, most importantly, to Lu Feng and Yi Cheng meeting again. And their reunion was EXCEPTIONAL. 🔥 Their relationship became exactly the kind of toxic, obsessive love story that you just can't get enough of. Even though it only lasted for a few episodes, I was completely invested. If it were up to me, I honestly would have made that dynamic the main focus of the entire drama.

Their relationship actually reminded me a little of the villain couple from *Pursuit of Jade*, except that *Double Helix* gave me something I desperately wanted: a satisfying ending for BOTH main couples. 😭❤️

As for Lu Feng, I honestly understood most of his reactions. Of course, some of his behavior was extreme, and the drama seemed to frame part of it as a psychological problem, but I think that was also their way of showing how deeply Yi Cheng cared about him despite everything.

And Lu Feng himself... what can I even say? 😭🔥 He was SUCH a great Top. My only complaint is: this man has that face AND that body, and the directors still didn't give us more scenes?! Criminal. 😂 He's definitely a walking red flag 🚩, but at the same time his jealousy, possessiveness and intensity were exactly what made their relationship so addictive to watch. Maybe I'm crazy, but when someone is supposedly deeply in love and shows absolutely no reaction when they're about to lose that person, I find that much harder to believe.

Lu Feng was absolute eye candy, and the second male lead Top was seriously handsome too. 👀🔥

It feels SO good to find a story that gets me emotionally involved to this extent. I want more messy, obsessive, toxic love stories like this — just PLEASE give me a happy ending at the end of all that suffering. 😭❤️‍🔥

At this point, I think I'm officially over soft, straightforward romance. Give me obsession, jealousy, possessiveness, emotional chaos, red flags... and then let them live happily ever after. 😂🚩❤️
