1They went deep in...Entertaining and deeper than expected
If at first the story made me think that the drama was more or less a smutty fanfic story put on screen (which is not a dig, I can appreciate a guilty pleasure kind of drama), it was definitely much more than that. There are layerS to the story as well as I think also an activist message and some important criticism of society regarding LGBTQ+ relationships and their depiction on screen. It does not go very deep on the later, but it is clearly there and the ending is quite a statement in itself, worth the watch for its finale scenes.Regarding the acting, it was quite unbalanced. I was very surprised to see Ollie (that I had not seen since his Boys Planet participant day) in this assertive, very bossy lead, obsessed and demanding. Even if that was a lot to grasp at first (and that he definitely looked younger than the part would have required), he did amazing for a first drama role and totally ripped of his cutie teen idol image that I had of him. The other main actor Shu Yuan was a bit awkward at time and I wish I would have seen a bit more nuance from him portraying some scenes, even if I know the script did almost force him to act dialed up to 100% level of angst, leaving not a lot of room for range. It lacked something for me to fully get onboard with his way of portraying the role(s). If I liked overall the leads and their chemistry (carried a lot by Ollie), I also found the acting performance of the remainder of the cast average, with some over the top and exaggerated acting.
I also appreciated the overall filmmaking. They used smart visual tricks for the viewers to immediately get which level of the story they were looking at...And when the lines got blurry, the directing brought that convincingly to life. The soundtrack was also quite good and fitting in itself, even if probably not long lasting memory material.
I would recommend this to people that enjoy layered toxic relationships and dark romance. If you don't mind a solid touch of angst and melodrama in your series, you need to try this one. If the scenario in its last arcs tired me with its repetitive and somewhat uninspired conflicts, the meta elements of the series, the shift in perspective, the way storylines were feeding and bleeding into each other and the way they smartly concluded won me over.

A psychological study that shocked me.
I normally dont write a review but if mine can maybe get one person to watch this show I find its worth it.Story:
Deep in explores the relationships of 2 complex couples in different worlds. One in real life and another in fiction. Gao Zhung and Fang Chi are a couple binded by the script but their story is equally compelling to the actors playing them. I appreciated how the story wasnt clean or without its complexity and moral ambiguity. The director gives it equal importance and time to explore its really dark issues that the show handeled very well. The story is told by side by side in mirrored themes and psychological dependecy. Zhe Xin and Zhao Zhun feel very diffrent both in set up and personality. As the actors begin to fall deeper into their characters their story begins to mirror the other and their minds become more and more fragmented. The direction does a great and subtle job of blurring the lines of what is real with the audience all the way from the aespect ratio, to smal lines of dialoug they say that could easily be missed. The story here is the reason to watch this drama, the audience isnt treated like children, the complexity gives the viewer alot to chew on and discuss and this was easily the most surprising aspect about Deep In. The ending so recontextualises the entire theme of the series in something I havent felt since seeing the Sixth Sense for the first time. It makes rewatchability a must.
Acting:
The acting is another reason to watch this show both Ollie and Shuyuan take on these difficult roles head in and without shying away from its provocative nature. While china has found a way around these restrictions, its still very risky to take part in explicit material But these two do it confidently and not acting scared. They remain 100 percent commited to bringing the characters to life and for being so young I see a bright future.
Music / Score:
Admittedly im not a big music person but I found it to be implemented well here i think the music really lends to expressing how the audience needs to feel during certian moments. Creating great atmosphere and tonally setting things up.
Direction:
This as far as im aware is a first time director and I think shines here, visually the show looks great even with is budget. I want to praise him for making the correct changes with the novel and adaptating it for a modern audience while still respecting the original works intention. He even contextualises these chages within the narrative so it makes sense and that is almost never done in any show. He knows not to shy away from the dark aspect but does soften them to make them a bit more digestible which I appreciated. The direction is focused and clear on delivering its concept while adding so much little details to mirror the scenes. He is the glue that keeps the series together.
Overall thoughts:
Deep in a series that surprised me more than I eever thought when it began and that depth isnt revealed right away. The show eases you into thinking its going to be one way but as they get deeper into filming. The more its complex ideas come to the forefront. Its a dark deeply sad show but I feel executed super well. The performances are wonderful and the NC scenes serve as important context, and they made alot of positive changes for the better. I hope you can give this show a chance becuse there is alot of fresh and new ideas here that make it stand out above the rest. I'll be excited to see what this director does next.

Tasteful directing paired with an interesting plot
I have not finished this drama but I HAD to make a review to STRONGLY suggest anyone who is on the fence to watch this drama. I may be a little biased because I am an Ollie fan but Ollie is like the last reason I think of when thinking about how good this series is.Okay lets start with the obvious, the two male leads are INCREDIBLY good-looking. NGL it has been a little hard finding such good-looking actors that have visual chemistry with each other in the chinese bl world recently. Anyways those high-nose bridges and almost AI visuals should be enough to convince anyone to watch. Their visuals just naturally fit their roles really well so as the viewer, you're automatically convinced and able to buy-into the story. Shuyuan's eyes are like really mesmerising...
What really sets this story apart is the way that Wen Dao, the director, has presented this series. He is incredibly good at making moments with the leads intimate and honestly I am fascinated by the way he is presenting this story. It is impossible to tell this show is low-budget and although this is a dual story where the leads both play two characters, the director can clearly seperate the plots but make them both interesting and worth investing your time into. Honestly I am more invested in the story that the actors play than the story of the actors themselves. That is how good the director is at his job.
This leads me to point three, this plot is so novel. This type of relationship dynamic, love story, complex characters have never really been tapped into and it shows. I am SO invested, it seems like every episode brings a new (but equally important) layer into each character. This aspect of the drama makes every episode binge-worthy. I has been a while since I found a story worthy enough to stay up and wait for episodes to drop lol.

Uncomfortable
The story is a bit convoluted with two parallel storylines, the actors’ relationship (toxic) and the characters’ relationship (toxic).The acting is mediocre at best and the chemistry absent. But the reason I dropped is because it’s so Wang Yibo/ Xiao Zhan coded it’s to watch like one of those sleazy AI edits.
Same hairstyles, clothes and the actors were chosen for their passing resemblance from certain angles (not their skills). It’s too obvious for it to be a coincidence. Wherever you stand on the WYB/XZ ship, it’s cringeworthy and uncomfortable.

A Deep Dive into Deep In's Psychology
I honestly didn't expect Deep In to affect me this much.At first glance it sounds like another story about actors falling in love while filming, and I went in expecting nothing. But somewhere along the way I realized the romance isn't even the most interesting part. The show uses acting as a way to explore identity, denial, grief, and how easily our emotions can blur the line between what's real and what isn't.
What fascinated me the most is that it never feels like the characters suddenly "fall in love because of acting" That would be too simple. Instead acting became a psychological device the thing that strips away everything they've been hiding from themselves. It forces them to sit with emotions they can no longer explain away. The more the characters insist they're "just acting" the more the audience starts questioning whether acting is creating these feelings or simply revealing ones that were already there.
Zhang Zhun spends so much time insisting "It's just acting" that eventually you start rolling your eyes because sir who are you trying to convince? Zhen Xin or yourself? He never really builds a wall between his real life and his feelings. He doesn't keep reminding everyone about his gf or try to create distance. He just repeats the same sentence like it's hoping that once filming ends, everything will magically go back to normal. Watching someone bargain with themselves like that felt incredibly human.
The show also plays with reality in a way I didn't expect. There were moments where even I forgot whether I was watching the actors or the drama they were filming. That blurry line isn't there just to confuse the audience it mirrors exactly what the characters are going through. You start questioning where Gao Zhun ends and Zhang Zhun begins, where Fang Chi ends and Zhen Xin begins, and whether those boundaries even matter anymore. Your confusion is just like theirs about their feelings and them getting in and out of character.
Another thing I appreciated is how the series treats trauma. It doesn't feel like it's using painful experiences just to shock the audience. The aftermath, the fear, the emotional breakdowns they're allowed to be messy. Some scenes were genuinely hard to watch for me because they felt so raw Shuyuan portays them amazingly. Even when I completely questioned the therapist's methods (seriously someone revoke that man's license 😭) I understood what the show was trying to explore emotionally.
And then there are the moments after the director yells "Cut" It snaps me right back to reality along with them and the long awaited real plot continues all the things and mess I felt from that rollercoaster it felt like they were telling me it's a dream you can wake up now, lol those might actually be my favorite.
The cameras stop rolling, but the emotions don't. The actors don't magically switch back into themselves. They carry the weight of those characters with them, and that's where the show really shines. It asks a question I don't think I've seen explored this way before: what happens when pretending becomes emotionally real?
By the end of episode 9, the line that stayed with me wasn't even a dramatic speech it was simply "It's not Fang Chi It's Zhen Xin"
That one sentence quietly tears down every excuse the story had been building. No more scripts. No more characters. No more hiding behind the role just one person telling another "This is me"
Deep In isn't trying to convince you that acting creates love. It's asking whether acting can uncover feelings that were already there but too frightening to acknowledge.
And honestly? That's a much more interesting story.

WOAAAAHHHH!! I was really not expecting that ending. I had read a comment on here a while ago that said to pay attention to both story lines because they were important, and I had that in the back of my head while continuing the series. I just didn't expect FC/GZ and ZX/ZZ to both be real couples. I loved how the aspect ratio changed to differentiate the movie and the actors. Everything about this show was truly amazing and I will be rewatching this in the future with my new knowledge of FC/GZ. I will miss seeing new episodes every Friday & Saturday, but I'm excited to see what the future holds for these amazing actors Ollie and Shuyuan!Was this review helpful to you?
Deep In (入戏) - A BL That Gets Under Your Skin
Deep In turned out to be such an epic watch, bringing the heat while perfectly balancing not one but two storylines. I still can't believe how good this was. The two actors, who were completely new to filming in general, let alone BL, played their roles amazingly. They had two characters to focus on and deliver for each role, and they did it so well that it's honestly staggering.
What really sets Deep In apart is its bold social message. This is one of the first CBLs I've seen that explicitly pushes the idea that being gay is okay, that they should be allowed to love and live happily, and that the world is too harsh to gay people. That's quite the message to send to the Chinese people, and I honestly wonder how much of that was cut out for the home audience. The series doesn't just present romance; it validates queer experiences and challenges viewers to reconsider prejudices.
The chemistry between the leads is electric, especially in scenes like Episode 2's NC scene where the director calls "cut" three times but the actors continue, completely lost in the moment. Episode 7's snow scene has become iconic - a quiet confession where Zhen Xin says, "I walked 472 steps following you from the hotpot," before Zhang Zhun kisses him. These moments showcase the series' ability to convey profound emotion through subtlety rather than grand declarations.
I feel like this show will genuinely help people in real life - whether it's actors who have fallen in love but can't show it, or just promoting acceptance of gay people and blurring the line between an actor being gay or not. Seeing this story become popular will hopefully change minds and make people more accepting so they don't have to hide anymore. With its 8.6/10 rating from nearly 4,000 users, it's clearly resonating with audiences.
Watching it, I felt like I was slightly seeing a retelling of Ziyu and Tian Xu Ning's hidden (assumed) love story from Revenge Love. Deep In isn't just entertainment - it's a cultural milestone that challenges conventions while delivering an emotionally compelling viewing experience. Its blend of psychological complexity, authentic performances, and social relevance makes it essential viewing for anyone interested in the evolution of BL storytelling.

A Trope I Always Wanted To See
If you've ever wondered whether actors fall for each other for real, if they ever develop real feelings, then drama is definitely something you'd enjoy! It might be my favourite drama of 2026! And I don't hand out 10s willy nilly. PS. Every episode has an end credit scene!Trigger Warning: rape depiction; mild spoilers ahead
From the very first opening shot, Deep In (the Act) had me hooked. One must note that it doesn't perfectly follow how actors on sets are managed. The focus is on how 2 actors dive into their roles in order to get intimate and lines start to blur between fiction and reality. Both actors are straight and these feelings make them feel confused.
The drama really upped the game for all Chinese BLs with their NC scenes. Going from watching BL stories turned into bromance to no holds bar drama was quite shocking. At the same time, there is no nudity and yet you can feel the sexual tension and chemistry between the characters! The intimate scenes were really done well.
The shift between the actors' lives and drama scenes at times are really seemless and watching the drama scenes were quite enjoyable. It was like watching 2 dramas for the price of one.
Regarding the rape scenes, I do want to mention that this was dealt as a serious topic rather than an act of love by a partner. It was treated as negative and not romanticised in anyway. It was important to the story of the drama they were starring in. However, it can be uncomfortable/traumatic to watch, especially ep 6.
Deep In really sent me on a rollercoaster of emotions, including anger and disgust. I found myself waiting excitedly for each episode's release. This is a drama that is best binge watched because waiting became hard.
The actors, Ollie and Shu Yuan did a great job creating a distinction between themselves as actors and the roles they were playing, especially Ollie. He's only 20 but I was really taken aback by his talent. I can't believe he was the same kid from Boys Planet. The improvement has been spectacular! I genuinely hope both of them get flooded with more projects after Deep In. All the supporting actors did a good job even when they made you hate them and made the show a fun watch!
The drama's cinematography and OST are brilliant. Back To You and Tiger In My Love (sung by Ollie) are my current favourites but Titanic is another lovely song. Also the ending song in ep12 was amazing.
I hope everyone gives this drama a fair chance and hopefully you'll also experience the charm of Deep In!

Why Deep In Just Set the New Gold Standard for Novel Adaptations
If this show doesn’t make you fall in love with it, I don’t know what will!Having read the original novel, I was honestly skeptical about how they’d handle the adaptation. The book is packed with heavy, deeply traumatizing scenes that felt almost impossible to translate to the screen. But the production team completely blew me away with how sensitively and beautifully they adapted the story.
First of all, Shuyuan and Ollie did absolute justice to their characters. On top of their incredible acting, their visuals are unreal—I am officially obsessed.
The narrative structure is brilliant. In one universe, you have the frame story: rookie actor Zhang Zhun getting cast alongside film emperor Zhen Xin, bonding while rooming together as Zhen Xin slowly teases his way into Zhang Zhun’s heart.
But the main universe is where the emotional core lies. Gao Zhun’s story—surviving a deeply traumatic assault and later meeting the therapist Fang Chi through his girlfriend—is dark, complex, and captivating. To me, the dynamic between Fang Chi and Gao Zhun completely stole the show. It brought something fresh, raw, and genuinely unexpected to the table rather than falling into predictable tropes.
That intense depth and care in the storytelling is exactly why this show captured my heart.

The best
At first i didnt think double storys would work well. But it they really made it work. We really got storys in one drama The Second story also very good no blanks no open ending they really made a complete movie inside 12 ep it soo amazing. I really love how they separate two storys using screen ratio. And as audience we didnt get lost in the two storys. And the actors really outstanding despite this drama being their first major acting role. They performed really well. It was really some crazy raw acting. Also the intimate seens they really made t work without showing much skin it was really great. And i wanna give applause to the director this is one of the best bls ever. And the music idk how much is their budget but the thats some high quality music really good. And about the ending this might be one of the best ending such romantic cool ending. Deep In is a 10/10 for me. The script is well written and consistent, and there isn't a single episode where I felt bored. The acting was excellent. Ollie and Shu Yuan did an amazing job portraying two roles each. Their performances were so convincing that, to me, Zhen Xin and Fang Chi, as well as Zhang Zhun and Gao Zhun, each had their own unique personalities that made them feel like completely different characters.Some people said we didn't get a second couple, but for me, we did. Fang Chi and Gao Zhun were the second couple.
To Director Wen Dao and the entire production team, you did an incredible job. Thank you for bringing Deep In to life. Thank you for trusting this young cast, especially Ollie and Shu Yuan. And thank you for bringing us joy every Friday and Saturday.
I'm really sad that it's over, but I'm also so happy for Ollie and Shu Yuan. I truly hope they'll have many successful projects in the future.

China continues to dominate!!
once again, China dominates in all genres! okay, so first of all the story was so interesting because it was a movie within a drama, and to be honest I would have totally watched that movie! chemistry was great, acting was great, pacing was fantastic, kept me intrigued from the very first episode! the therapist character in the "movie" probably needed to have some form of realism, because that was the worst therapist on the planet! but it goes with the drama 😆 although I am not a fan of the massive time jump, this does have a year-long time jump at the end, but it is a happy ending, which always makes me glad! I would recommend watching this, although to just give warning if this is something that you are shy about, this is a fairly mature film, not horribly so, but I probably wouldn't watch it with my mother 🤔, but I do wish China did the BL scene more, because honestly, China is the best of the Asian dramas! in my humble opinion 😉Was this review helpful to you?
