Upcoming JTBC historical K-drama Sacred Jewel (directed by Jeong Dae Yun of She Was Pretty, W, I'm Not a Robot, Reborn Rich)has unveiled stills.
Sacred Jewel takes place in 1258 (Goryeo Dynasty), when defeat loomed after years of war with the Mongols. The story follows the heroic struggle of an expedition unit that sets out in search of a sacred relic believed to protect the nation, as well as a princess who strives to save them.
Ahn Bo Hyun plays Baek Gyeol, a special commander of the escort team tasked with transporting the Gwaneum Boju, Goryeo's sacred relic that protects the nation. A young general from the Gyeongnyong Army, the royal guard, Baek Gyeol is in love with the Emperor's daughter. However, he embarks on a perilous journey alongside Yabyeolcho warriors to escort the sacred bead, a mission on which the nation's fate depends.
The stills capture Ahn Bo Hyun completely transformed into Baek Gyeol. His long hair and neat costume evoke a Goryeo-era vibe, while his well-defined features and deep gaze convey his charisma as a commander. His expression, as though lost in thought, hints at a story to tell, matched by a commanding presence.
Baek Gyeol possesses not only the strength of a formidable warrior but also the innocence and burning passion characteristic of youth. Although he exudes firm, restrained dignity on the outside, he harbors affection for the person he loves and genuine, unfeigned emotions within. It remains to be seen what choices Baek Gyeol will make and what changes he will undergo throughout the drama.
Ahn Bo Hyun is taking on his first lead role in a historical drama since his debut. Through his portrayal of a Goryeo-era general, he is set to showcase a different image and charm than he has established through modern dramas. The actor has reportedly devoted considerable effort to martial arts training involving bows and swords to bring out the character's distinctive traits. Expectations are high for how he will portray not only dynamic action scenes but also the emotions that convey the character's love and inner turmoil.
Sacred Jewel premieres this December and will be available worldwide on Amazon Prime Video.
