The TVING original series The Substitute has dropped fresh stills.
The Substitute is a crime thriller that follows Nam Jae Yeop (Bae Hyun Sung), Kang Geon Tae (Cha Kang Yoon), and Ju Hui Dong (Park Yoon Ho), whose struggles and desires drive them toward an irreversible crime on the day of the college entrance exam.
A top student from a financially disadvantaged background attends an elite private high school on a special scholarship and is coerced into taking the exam for someone who threatens to expose his secret.
The story follows students facing a test that determines whether they can avoid becoming failures in life, with their futures hinging on successfully completing the College Scholastic Ability Test (CSAT). Amid an unpredictable plot rife with betrayal and tricks, three characters face extreme dilemmas as they engage in fierce battles of wits and thrilling psychological warfare.
In the stills, the trio appear to be enjoying a game of basketball during physical education class like ordinary students. However, they are also seen looking around with serious expressions.
The stills tease curiosity about what secrets these seemingly ordinary model students are hiding and how the "one-day deal" they make, with their lives on the line, will shake up their relationships.
Bae Hyun Sung commented, "Even from the script reading, each character stood out clearly. Actor Cha Kang Yoon did a great job portraying Geon Tae's upright and steadfast nature, while actor Park Yoon Ho made a strong impression with his portrayal of Hee Dong's emotional expressions. It was fun working with actors who each have their own distinct charms."
Cha Kang Yoon shared, "I think Geon Tae was able to breathe within the story because the two actors convincingly brought Nam Jae Yeop and Joo Hee Dong to life. Actor Bae Hyun Sung, as both an older brother figure and a senior colleague, was good at picking up on Geon Tae's emotional state, while actor Park Yoon Ho has a personality similar to Hee Dong's in real life, so I acted while calling him Hee Dong rather than Yoon Ho."
Park Yoon Ho also praised their exceptional chemistry, saying, "Although Bae Hyun Sung and I are friends in the drama, he was a dependable senior colleague on set. Actor Cha Kang Yoon is also the same age as me in real life, so we had fun working together, and I was able to learn a lot from him."
The production team of The Substitute also remarked, "The synergy between actors Bae Hyun Sung, Cha Kang Yoon, and Park Yoon Ho, each with their own distinct charms, is remarkable. The passionate acting showdown between these rising actors will be another point of interest for viewers." They added, "Please look forward to seeing what new sides the three actors will show."
The Substitute will premiere on November 23.
