Chris Appelhans, co-director of Netflix's global hit KPop Demon Hunters, revealed that he created the character Jinu with Korean actor Song Joong Ki as a reference.

On the May 21 broadcast of Welcome, First Time in Korea?, Chris Appelhans — who, together with director Maggie Kang, sparked a worldwide box office phenomenon with Netflix's animated film KPop Demon Hunters — will make his appearance as a guest.

Director Chris Appelhans made his debut with the low-budget animated film Wish Dragon. The film became a global hit and even earned him such immense trust from Sony Pictures Animation that he was essentially told that he could "make any project he wanted."

Particularly, he revealed that he actively referenced Korean dramas and actors' performances to capture the characters' emotions and details in the work. He studied emotional arcs and methods of character expression by analyzing dramas such as Vincenzo, Crash Landing on You, and Boys Over Flowers. He also shared that he specifically referenced Song Joong Ki's facial expressions in Vincenzo to complete the emotional details of the main character, Jinu.

He added that the facial acting and emotional expression of Korean actors, including IU, Son Ye Jin, Kim Tae Ri, Yoo Yeon Seok, and Park Seo Joon, also influenced the character-building process.

The broadcast will also, for the first time on television, unveil the inside of Sony Pictures Animation — one of Hollywood's leading animation studios in the United States — as well as the workspace where KPop Demon Hunters was created. Director Chris will personally introduce the studio he worked in and the production journey while sharing vivid behind-the-scenes stories about how some of the film's most memorable scenes came to life.
