Hwang Dong Man

Fictional Character

A film director and member of 'The Eight' group formed through their university film club, he is the only one who, even after twenty years, hasn’t managed to make his debut. Despite that, he’s always the loudest when the group gathers, constantly talking and ruthlessly critiquing every film under the sun. Even he knows the irony of it, like someone who has never experienced war sitting among veterans and telling war stories. With little else to show for himself, talking has become the only way he fills the space.

For him, talking is almost a way of proving he exists. The moment he senses that others are merely tolerating him, his words only become faster and louder. Being quiet feels unbearable. Silence makes him feel as if he might disappear, so he keeps talking about everything, what happened yesterday, what happened last week, anything at all, just to feel present and alive.

But then he meets one woman. Around her, he finds himself becoming quiet without even trying, actually listening for once. The reason is simple: she listens to him too. And that unsettles him. His whole identity has always been the chaotic, restless man who talks endlessly yet somehow isn’t unhappy. Now, as he begins to calm down around her, he can’t help but wonder what it means if the very thing that defines him starts to change.
