Really wanted to share this gem with y'all sooner, but I had it on-hold for a while and wanted to wait until I finished it before posting, so here I am. Started this on a whim 'cause of a review I saw and then the trailer which promised me some tropes I might like... what I got? A badass asf FL, a super pretty ML who's eyes go O-O whenever he looks at FL, some surprisingly consistent and good role reversal, and more chin tilts than I could keep track of!

Of course, it still had it's downside moments, like a reverse harem situation that wasn't RR, and ML is ofc still very capable and he does rescue FL more often than I'd like, however, he doesn't go all "I'm the MAN, I must DOM and PROTECT you" and pretends to be weak so she'll protect him and even lets her continue to protect him after she discovers his act. He liked being her pretty weak husband and I genuinely don't see that enough! He can go sit with Pei Wenxuan (The Princess Royal) and Gu Mingzhu (My Lady General) in the 'pretty, totally 'weak', doting housewives' club. I also loved how protective she was, she never hesitated to step in!

So ML is a crown prince who fakes his death and infiltrates a bigshot sect disguised as the recently deceased sickly young master whom FL was betrothed to. FL is a regular sect member who gained prestige and support by being badass and smart asf and is vying for the sect leader position (which she will attain once she marries the young master, lol. I really like this of the woman inheriting her husband's fortune/position upon marriage. It's such a nice RR detail). ML pretends to be a weak village boy and thus she protects him while constantly sussing him out. Had to space the spoilers out cuz it wasn't letting me tag it 😭

There are a LOT of amazing role rev scenes between them. She's cold and aloof, he's warm and gentle. She's domineering and a lil mean, he's innocent and submissive (it's a bit vague how much is pretend, but I do believe his innocence and wonder is genuine... like the way he looks at her is NOT acting), he's sassy and pouty, she smirks and coxes him <3

And can I just say... this actor's eyes are insane. They're thin and sharp and then boing: O-O SO cute

Now, do I wish the romance would've actually been between her and the genuinely sickly young master who eagerly gives her his inheritance and supports her as a stay-at-home husband? Yes, yes I do. But this is a fine compromise.

As for the story... it started out interesting and unusual, focusing mostly on FL's investigation as she tries to rise to power. But it started to drag and the plot conveniences got so bad they're outright silly and the ending was a messy rushed mess. I also wasn't too keen on how they wrapped up the leads' romance? FL leaving all her ambition cuz her goals changed only to marry into the fucking royal family? And live a life in a cage? 😬 But we're not here for good plot, are we? 😂 I did like a lot of the characters and their dynamics, if only the drama would've develop those further...

And yes, I did make like a lot of GIFs for this drama...

Also this is the same actor who played the fake eunuch in Dominion and Devotion! I'm definitely gonna give that one another chance sometime soon. I need to see him again. He's SO pretty.

Aaaah I meant to ask, has anyone been watching Blossoms of Power? I wasn't planning to, but I saw a gifset today where the ML was saying he's so frail that when he becomes emperor he could be easily disposed of (I think by FL, if she so chooses?)... potentially RR 👀??

Ohhh I've been meaning to ask about Blossoms of Power too! The synopsis made it look like a potential green-tea male lead who acts pitiful and frail in front of the FL, who is cold and vengeful. It is Meng Ziyi, so I'm hopeful! The ML is He Yu, the ML from Speed and Love though, so I honestly have no idea.

I think I saw a reddit post saying that the ML is super cold and ruthless to everyone else but is a baby girl in front of FL, so there's that?

I might start watching, see how it is, and report back!

Secrets of the Shadow Sect has been soooooo funnn 😭 I love the FL's domme vibes and ML is lovely. So much RR goodness!! I've actually been putting off the last few episodes because I don't want it to be over lol. Definitely going on my rewatch list 😁

Ikr!! Finally a convincing female cross dressing as male. It's not like they just put the actress in men clothes and called it a day. It's sooo convincing. And she's dominating (plus point) the way she fights him and pick him up on her shoulder? Ughhhhh!
