Wish I knew 😭 Not only the abundance of red-flag or oftentimes outright black-flag MLs, but also the red-flag moments for the supposedly green-flag MLs have me frankly exhausted beyond reason... The ML ALWAYS has to force himself on the FL at least once (from what I had seen tho, the ML from PoJ did not do that), EVEN in RR dramas (I'm looking at you Sniper Butterfly and The Princess Royal...)
Unfortunately... dark romance with abusive men as the 'romantic' leads are basically all that exists... hence why us RR folk are lowkey dying of thirst out here 😭 If imma deal with an abusive dark romance, at least make the woman the problem, please and thank you! 😂

The Six Deaths of the Saint
Putting dramas on the backseat for a bit because nothing is hitting for me and so I read a short story about a valiant and ruthless knight who must overcome her fate and ends up falling in love with her pretty, delicate squire!!!
I can't say too much about this, because pretty much everything is a spoiler, but this story... y'all.... this story changed me. I was shaken, I was devastated and I was kicking my feet. Like, augh- I just have to give a warning about the story and that is that it's tragic, but the ending is also sad. But it was SO worth it and genuinely one of the best reads everrrr 😩
So yeah, if anyone here likes reading or wants to read something that's not too long and has very well-done role reversal, I highly recommend The Six Deaths of the Saint!

Yes, this one, I watched it. It is indeed RR. FL is the a bandit chief and ML is her in-house husband. it was funny also. And I was so glad to see the chubby girl stay.
First scene : Bandit FL saves a Young Master from pursuers, not knowing that his identity is special. As a bandit overlord, FL kidnaps him and decides to marry him....
If I remember correctly my rating of this drama was about 8.0.
It was tropy but sweet , cute, funny with some spicy wannabe scenes ( rare : Big girl FL having s*x with ML , several times... which is rare in dramas. I don't know why chubby girl don't get to have spicy scene when they have so much "curvey forms" that could be utilized by screenwriters to speak about passion and intimacy, in an elegant way. They don't have any problems to do that with skinny actresses, by the way. )
As for the RR : 5/10 but I am not sure.
FL being an overlord who take some liberties with ML, being handsy with him, forces herself onto him, using aphrodisiac to have intercourse with him but him being reluctand at first then falling for her but still doesn't submit totally with a tsundere demeanor. All that, if I remember correctly.
You should find it entertaining.

ML forcing himself onto FL is a must in every drama nowadays. Weirdly in mainstream dramas as you mentioned FL never forces herself onto ML.But FL still has to suffer this in RR dramas. Which is weird to say the least. I remember "The princess Royal" that I dropped for various reasons after 16 episodes.
As for "dark romance with abusive leads" : I don't know what is "romantic" in abusive situations. Again, a way for writers to tell women to stay in abusive situations. Total BS.
For example 《掌印藏嬌》 : this vertical dark romance is not RR per se. ( 1/10 in my opinion) The only RR element is the FL who is strong, opinionated, sharp tonged, flirtatious and does everything she can to avoid her clan's tragic fate and the suffering she experienced in her past life. I rated that vertical dark romance 10/10 because the story in good, complex, visualy beautiful and the dialogues sometimes are just unbelivable to hear in a drama ( FL's sharp tong is lethal hahaha). ML is a total ruthless Yama Chief Eunuque but Prime Minister's daughter FL still gets the courage to propose an alliance to him. And this tsundere yama ML, although he is vicious and blood-thisty , he can for some reasons still keep an aloof face, yet fall for FL very early in the plot ( a lot of push and pulls). So he never harmed FL or let FL be harmed by others in the drama, On the other hand, he had no problem killing enemies when necessary.
(I would love to see a RR FL in that kind of setting. Like you mentioned, the Yama should be the FL).
I honestly prefer a steady strong FL who doesn't wave, even if she is shaking inside , because it is more satisfying for me, than those supposed RR heroines whose Personas scrumble after a few minutes in.
If this drama was RR that would be great. A dark romance with no brutalization, just faking it.

Recently, I found myself watching a lot but a lot of shows, that looked, like RR (on the synopsis) , felt like RR (in the setting or in the firsts scenes) but end up not being so RR.
It is like going to a restaurant, ordering roasted chicken and getting roasted turckey instead.
So, I don't know if the Role Reversal in no more a niche genre, but more a trendy genre now. this is why writers use RR as a click-bait to make people watch their last release but still "safely" keep a partriarchal dynamic in the show. Or just put a sprinkle of RR in the show.
In short, a clever or badass FL in the first scenes almost always ends up letting herself be bullied by villains. Which is a demolition of her persona in my opinion.
Then, I find myself in a limbo, not knowing what I just watched .
I agree. Nowadays, I don't find any real RR dramas/movies, most just have the allure of it.

I agree. Nowadays, I don't find any real RR dramas/movies, most just have the allure of it.
True, they want to lure us into watching their show. Sometimes Japanese shows are little more reliable and they don't switch the character's persona but not everybody likes J-dramas. There is a lot of elements of culture to understand to truly grasp the meaning conveyed in a show.
Thai drama are also more reliable but their is a lake of quality in writing most of the time.
I was disappointed a lot watching C-dramas.
