I must say that this series is one of the more realistic adaptations of Chinese BLs. Chinese BL novels are often not cute and tame; they get very dark and filled with trauma underscored by "black flag" main leads. A very good job was done here in bringing the story to life in a way that is truly representative of the dark nature of the source material "Si Mian Fu" (四面佛) by Su Er Liang (苏二两).
The production is well done in my opinion. It is done in such a way that the ambiance of the scenes compliment the wealthy and business centred features of the plot. The cinematography was clean and pleasing to the eye, especially during the NC scenes. The way they utilised light, shadows and dark hues to bring out the atmosphere and emotions of the NC scenes is certainly captivating.
Another thing I loved about this series is the dialogue. I love how they did not shy away from using "raw" dialogue during the NC scenes. For me one of the sexiest things about a NC scene is not necessarily the amount of exposed skin, but rather how bold the writers are willing to be in what is said during such intimate scenes. Too often NC scenes lack speech and instead music is used to enhance them; in my opinion raw and unfiltered words (dirty talk if you will) can carry a scene just as well, as it lends realism, and perhaps echos the viewers' innermost thoughts that they might even be too shy to say out loud for how dirty they might be.
I think that the last three episodes dragged it out a bit much.
All in all it was good series.
This might be one of my shortest reviews yet lol I wonder if that speaks well of the series or not 😂
