I’ve finished a number of shows recently. Here are my thoughts.
1000 Years Old (2024)
This was a cute and sweet subtle comedy about a vampire and human who fall in love. It’s nothing like a vampire drama, but more like fluff where one character happens to be a vampire—oops—so he needs to eat pork blood and stay out of the sun. Mr. P described it as a satire of a vampire story (or something similar,) which helped me approach the show with realistic expectations. The story revolves around a pork blood food truck, and there are several likeable and supportive side characters. The romance is very slow burn. Overall I enjoyed this and liked the light-hearted tone, but I just found it slow at times, so it took me awhile to finish. I’d still recommend it if you want a filler show without stress. I gave it a 7.0. It’s on GagaOOLala.
Love Begins in the World of If (2025)
This was a really lovely short drama about an office romance. The main character is very insecure and unhappy at work and wishes he were different. He then experiences an alternative reality which opens his eyes to how his work and life could be different. He realizes several important things on his journey. First, that he wants to be in his original reality and change his own life himself. Second, that even subtle changes in his behavior in his own reality can make a world of differenc. Third, he has been misjudging people out of his own insecurity. In the end he opens up emotionally and is able to achieve what he wants on his own.
This drama is about everyday life, how caught up we can get by our own thoughts and feelings, and how a little kindness, cooperation, and communication can change so much. I loved the characters and the message of the drama, and was left with a surprising lot to think about, considering how it doesn’t seem to be about big ideas. I gave this an 8.5. It is available to watch numerous places but i watched it on Viki.
Burnout Syndrome (2025-2026)
I enjoyed this drama a lot. There were many wonderful things about it, but I had a few problems with it as well. Things I liked: these are adult characters with real feelings, selfish desires, flaws, and conflicts. They are understandable, sexy, interesting, and frustrating. They are trying to figure out what they want and how they feel, and if they know, they are trying to make what they want happen. It is not always pretty, and they are not always honest. But their desires feel real, raw, and enticing. I wanted Jira and Toh together even when they were at odds or not on even footing. I wanted it because I could feel they wanted it. Pheem also wanted Jira, but from lust or competitiveness, was unclear. I actually liked how messy it was though, because real life is messy and sometimes we need to see stories about that too.
I also really liked that this was a story about an artist, and it showed how hard that life can be and how much of himself Jira put into his art. I thought the artwork they used was wonderful, and very emotive. (If you like the artist, someone lists her name and Instagram page in the comments on the MDL page.) I also loved that the drama made a statement about AI and showed how difficult the AI situation is for artists.
Things I got frustrated with about this show:
I expected it to be even messier and for that to give it momentum going forward. I wanted a big toxic drama. Instead it was more about potentially real-life yellow or red flags, and the conflicts were not as intense but more thought-provoking. The story moved slower than I expected and I couldn’t really tell what direction it would go in next. The statement about AI was not as strong as I wanted, and the ending didn’t really resolve anything as much as show how the characters couldn’t escape their desires. Ending with “Do you think we can make this work?” Is much more like real life than your typical romance. We don’t know anymore than the characters do, we just get the possibility of a happy ending. Dew is left heartbroken, but also faces the reality of his situation and interacts with Jira even when it’s hard for him.
The actors were great, especially Gun, as usual. He can bring any character to life and make me care about him. I also cry whenever he cries. He is the master of the silent, slow tears.
This drama had a lot going for it but I wanted the story to be a little more cohesive. I gave it an 8.5. It is on iQIYI and maybe YouTube as well.
I actually have more shows to write about but this will do for now.
