Sammy’s Children’s Day
I know a lot of people are frustrated by the ending and feel like it was just a set up for season 2, but I loved it! This show didn’t have me in its hooks right away, but it presented complex characters in complicated, layered, and emotional situations. The actors did a great job showing a range of emotions in a subtle, restrained way. We saw who they were and how they got to know each other, and we could sense their feelings pretty early on. Still, we had questions and wanted to more. Each week I understood more about the characters but also still wanted to see how the situation would play out. There was violence but it wasn’t the heart of the show.
The heart of this show was two people caught up in lives they didn’t have much control over, trying to make the best of their situations. They were drawn to each other and continued to move in each other’s orbit. There was tension between them, and it was palpable. We also knew that Liu Yi didn’t understand his own feelings. So we’d wait and hope, wanting them to both finally acknowledge what’s going on between them.
Waiting for the confession, the confrontation, the realization of love between two people is nothing new in BLs, but with this situation and these characters, it felt like I was discovering this kind of story for the first time. Each week I was left wanting more, but each week still gave me something precious. I needed to keep living with these characters.
The ending didn’t give us enough, but to see how frantic Liu Yi was to find Chang Xi, and to see that moment when he found him and they kissed passionately, that gave me life! When Liu Yi was taken away and said wait for me, I knew that whether or not we got season 2, I could write the rest of the story in my mind. So I was immensely satisfied.
While everyone in the fandom talked about who was top and bottom, we don’t actually know how their sexual relationship would turn out. But I liked how the gangster character was vulnerable and the student character was assertive and went after what he wanted. We need characters who don’t fit in the same box all the time.
To me this was a great slow burn. It was also the first show this year that really moved me emotionally. I loved some other shows but didn’t feel “moved.” I guess I need more than a few special moments for that. I need a whole world where these characters live, a world that I care about and that draws me in each and every week, a world filled with interesting developments and lovable supporting characters. And a world where multiple moments touch my heart.
This was a 9/10 for me. I absolutely loved it.
