Omukade will drop in Thai cinema Jan 22nd, starring Yada Narilya. The film revolves around giant, monstrous centipede spirit from Japanese folklore.

Can't say that giant monsters are a draw for me but Yada and Daung certainly are =D

There a lot of titles I know that don't have a supernatural genre added.

One of the top grossing  films of 2016 (Thailand);  Khun Phan franchise is one of those (4 Tigers). I watch a lot of these type of series - Western/frontier stylized Lakorns essentially. Black magic, summoning of ghosts, curses, shape-shifting, reincarnation, etc -- good vs evil with a gun and a spell book. A popular Thai specific genre.  Don't forget the armour tattoos.  Do they qualify till tagged?

Yes. The tag is a place to start, not the bottom line. Improving the tags would be great but it's not required for something to qualify because getting tags approved can be a PITA if you're not [insert criteria I don't understand but am currently managing to fulfill].

From the first post in the wee challenge thread:
"Simple baseline criteria is a Thai production with ‘supernatural’ in the tags, or a title where that is appropriate or tangential - a ghost or two, spirits, some sort of magic, that sort of thing. Within reason, it's your call. MDL tags for Thai ‘horror’ and supernatural can be sparse with much room for improvement so reach out to me if you have suggestions for better tags or need help getting them approved."

I added the caveat 'within reason' in case someone pushes it too far too often, but have full confidence yours will always be well within.

Conversations about grey areas and boundaries (like I'm Tee Me Too where there isn't actually a ghost but Thai beliefs and culture around ghosts is very much part of it) are welcome too. I'm personally inclined to be lenient if there's a good conversation which is aware of and rooted in the broader cultural context :)

My hope is that all of this becomes more of a community and joint project than solely mine though and we can decide these sorts of things together <3

I rarely have problems.  Suggestion; tip use the edit page above right  on drama page go to genre , and submit tags there.

Thank you. Still have to go back and edit --  if I need to find something else. +D <3

I've got that part down :) Maybe it was easier to get them approved earlier? Mine are being accepted now, and with less evidence than before. Contribution points and level must help.

4 more titles with supernatural submitted.  =)

I'm not good with any kind of challenges, but I'll sign up for this one -- maybe I just want to see how much I can fill in before the year is out, just by watching whatever strikes my mood. (Or maybe I want an excuse to rewatch some favourites. *cough*KhunPhra*cough*)

What do you guys think about western supernatural elements? Like vampires? Or should we try to keep to Thai /SE-Asian specific themes?

Good to see you here :) Yes, please use the 'challenge' however you like. I wish we had another word for this kind of activity, I really do intend for it to be as relaxed and informal, or not, as each of us prefers. For me, it's a reminder to not lose touch with Thai ghost stories again.

It took me a silly amount of time to remember what the supernatural element in Death of Khun Phra is. LOLOL. Like ghost friends are entirely normal and unremarkable =D

If we can get Thai PBS un-geo-locked, I'll watch it again with you.

Each person's choice. How outside elements are adapted and integrated into story-telling is part of the whole.

Upcoming horror-supernatural movie The Stain (Rakhee), starring Engfa Waraha, Apo Nattawin, Jes Jespipat and Freen Sarocha. It's a Buppha Rahtree reboot. Coming to cinema Feb 26th.

Oh, you're someone I can ask this of =)

What's the comedy to stress ratio like in the original Buppha Rahtree - MDL tags aren't very useful for things like this. I keep almost getting around to watching it but not. My stress tolerance is particularly low just now (dark, wet and lonely winter + everything going on in the world) but I could really do with some comedy. I'm guessing it's more (not sure right word, violent, stressful, ???) than something like Low Season but not sure how much.

What's your take?

To be honest, Buppha Rahtree is not really a horror-comedy, but it does have like one or two tiny bit punchlines and that's all. But if I had to compare, Buppha Rahtree is pretty much like Pee Mak—there's drama, horror, a tragic love story, but minus the typical Thai slapstick jokes. I was still in school when I first watched the OG Buppha Rahtree, and honestly, I didn't find it that scary and/or funny at that time. So if you're looking for a horror/supernatural movie with some comedy relief, Buppha Rahtree is not one.

I'll watch the movie at some point just to learn a bit more of the culture, don't mind giving a couple of hours to that even if I don't get on with a movie. Plus, what with MDL tags and comments being so misleading sometimes I end up liking a lot I didn't expect to.

But I think I'll put this one off just now. Thank you for sharing your thoughts on it, it's appreciated.

Hi there!

Great idea for a club.

I do not like hard horror and gore: so zombies, monsters, killer viruses and body parts flying around is a hard NO!

But cute and/or funny ghost and supernatural stories? Yes please! And I've seen some good ones! Mostly BLs so now I would like to broaden my knowledge of Thai entertainment with movies and lakorns. I do not have a good record there: I never managed to finish a single ordinary lakorn.

So here is a challenge: find me a supernatural lakorn I will finish!

Series I have already seen : https://kisskh.at/list/4BNyZqk4

Any recs?

Welcome Yebles, glad to see you here =)

 Yebles:
find me a supernatural lakorn I will finish

To Sir, with Love. It's maybe not technically supernatural, but Jia's skill with herbs is essentially magic. It's a FANTASTIC lakorn too, very well written and delivered. It's primarily a story about women struggling for agency against the constraints of cultural sexism which defines them in terms of their relationship(s) to men - wife, mother, daughter. But we haven't come that far, so MDL folks see it in terms of the romance between men. Hopefully it's still on one31's official YT. I've been meaning to watch it again so let me know if/when you do.

Curse of Saree. one31 nonsense fantasy fairy tale lakorn which commits fully to its nonsense, gets the emotions right and therefore ends up working. It's less of a curse though, and more of a secret. Plus Baifern Pimchanok who is as delightful an actress as she is talented. She's one you 'need' to know for Thai telly/movie cultural literacy. Also one31's YT.

My Sassy Wedding. Black magic, spirits and fun shenanigans. Ch 3, not sure if it's available legally with subs.

There are more but maybe not so good for an intro to lakorns.
