Please direct all questions to the new Thai Supernatural Club conversation thread and subscribe to that if it interests you.
This is informal. It only needs 21 titles to ‘complete’ and most can be filled with movies if that’s your preference. The idea is less ‘challenge’ and more about exploring and hopefully building some small community for conversation and sharing. If you only do a few, that’s great. If you want to add in anything, go for it. If it ends up simply being a record of what you’ve seen this year, do that.
Thai ghost stories can often be quite gentle and moving, with minimal to no scary bits. Thai comedy-horror may have jump scares (or not) used for comedic purposes. Please ask if there is anything you wish to avoid. I’ll do everything I can to help you explore within your preferences.
Thrills and chills horror-horror enthusiasts are of course welcome as well. And everyone in between. I hope the mini-challenge works well for a wide range. If it doesn’t, we can modify it to better suit participants.
Simple baseline criteria is a Thai production with ‘supernatural’ in the tags, or a title where that is appropriate or tangential - a ghost or two, spirits, some sort of magic, that sort of thing. Within reason, it's your call. (If you're not sure, or it's gotten you thinking about parameters, definitions, anything - start a conversation in the other thread. That's very much welcome.) MDL tags for Thai ‘horror’ and supernatural can be sparse with much room for improvement so reach out to me if you have suggestions for better tags or need help getting them approved.
(Within reason) participants' own judgement overrides MDL tags or their lack.
Please offer 3 recommendations at the top of your mini-challenge form. One of the prompts is to watch a recommended title and this is a simple way of doing it. It will hopefully also encourage conversation and sharing. If you want to include a bit as to why, feel free. If you haven’t seen enough yet to recommend anything, don’t worry. You can add some later if you wish.
FAQ - (What did you mean by that?)
Over 16 episodes is probably a lakorn (Thai evening melodrama)
12 or less is probably a series
12-16 may be either lakorn or series. Ask if you’re not sure.
Unfortunately there’s no way to search MDL for lakorns. The easiest way for those who aren’t familiar is to let those of us who are suggest some.
Anthology movies and series are several stories brought together. At least one of the stories will be horror-horror so this is optional. Quality will vary too, so this is optional for horror enthusiasts as well.
If you’re new to this and don’t have a favourite to rewatch yet, fill that prompt with something you discover along the way and want to rewatch in the future.
Recommended - from the club thread, somewhere on or off MDL, or look through challenge posts to see what other participants recommend.
Genres - anything listed as genre on a platform or MDL or you feel is appropriate. (This may be an opportunity to improve MDL genre tags.) I maintain that Thais will never meet a genre they can’t put a ghost in. Let’s investigate that =D If someone comes up with a particularly rare or unexpected genre, I’ll figure out some sort of prize.
Regions - use the six region system (Northern, Northeastern/Isaan, Western, Central, Eastern and Southern). Isan is very well-represented in horror and supernatural. If you wish to use 3 filmed there, I will fully support your decision as long as you tell me where you found them to watch =D
Ask for help if you need suggestions or aren’t sure which region something is in.
Big House Setting - set primarily in a large, probably run down, almost definitely haunted, house, hotel or similar large building. Examples include: 404 Run Run, My Boo. The Cursed Land is a mixed setting but the house features prominently.
Oppressive School with Strange Things Happening - GMMTV speciality with an ensemble cast, generally longer then their usual series. Prime examples include The Gifted and Home School. If you’re already familiar with this format and find something which is similar, that’s good too. You could argue that Hide & Sis is a grown-up lakorn-esque version for example, or Enigma (first series only) is a compact non-ensemble take.
Mae Nak is a popular legend with roots in the mid 1800s. There are MANY adaptations of her story. Nang Nak (1999) is the best to begin with as so many subsequent adaptations draw on it in some way. Because the story is so well known amongst Thais, I maintain that Mae Nak adaptations are best considered as their own genre. Their endings in particular may do things which make sense as retellings of a very popular story but not so much on their own.
Ghost story - anything with a ghost. I want to add something but it’s a spoiler, so this is just encouragement to watch Thai ghost stories in general.
Comedy-horror - because this has to go in somewhere and I haven’t figured out how to make it its own category even though it deserves one.
Ghost/horror-coding in a not supernatural title - these can come up in the least expected places, often for humour, so just watch what you usually watch. Please cover your entry with a spoiler to keep it a surprise for others. I can point you to a movie if you want, but they really are best to stumble on unexpectedly.
Supernatural beings - ghosts, spirits, etc. Let’s see what we can find. If you get stuck, two ghost movies is fine.
Optional -wild card - anything else you want to add. Maybe you’ll find a great prompt for others to use.
Optional - traditional horror - like it says on the tin. If this is your bag, feel free to add whatever you want and help improve the prompt for others.
If you are doing the Thai Drama Club’s Watch Challenge, you may absolutely include a title you’ve used there here as well. This is a wee sister to the main challenge, not competition.
Suggestions for lakorns with supernatural elements:
Khun Chaai (To Sir With Love) - Jia's skill with herbs is essentially magic + it's a very well constructed lakorn
แค้นรักสลับชะตา (Switch of Fate) - body switch plot which explores every angle of the resulting emotions
Curse of Saree - one31 fantasy nonsense lakorn with deep commitment to the nonsense + Baifern so it works really well. (note 'Curse' is misleading, 'Secret' would be better.)
My Sassy Wedding - black magic and spirits, and a lot of fun too
Please suggest more in the Club thread (link above) and I'll add them here.

Low Season (goofy comedy, some jump scares but not scary, two hours in the northern mountains and a female lead who wears glasses)
Nang Nak (moderate horror, this is the clearest retelling of the popular legend, referenced in many others)
Shutter (upsetting content and there is an image which will haunt you… which is also referenced elsewhere. A lot. Worth seeing the original before something else spoils it. Perhaps THE classic 21st cen Thai horror movie.)

Three recommendations for others:
☑ "13 Beloved" (2006): Genres: Horror, Crime.
Violent and gory -- A black comedy film with a cult following. Fans of "Ichi the Killer," or "Squid Games" will appreciate it.
☑ "The Eyes Diary" (2014): Genres: Horror, Romance, Supernatural.
A mystery film, with macabre ghosts and karma. I do object to the romance tag.
☑ "Song Huajai Nee Puea Tur" (2015): Genres: Comedy, Romance, Drama, Supernatural.
Modern romance (no hitting); toss in reincarnation and links to past. Family is fun. This one has the right tag. Don't read the drama synopsis - spoilers.
