Korean LGBT+ Main & Side Characters/Romances
LGBT+ representation in K-Dramas (and also Korean movies, but mainly K-Dramas) is few and far between. That's why I decided to make this list. There is progression, and though it's very slow, I want to highlight Korea specifically for taking steps in the right direction.
I'll put a few movies on here. But mostly just dramas.
My Japanese LGBT+ List: https://kisskh.at/list/3bgDg7k4
Recommended Resources for Indie/Hard-to-Find Queer Korean Content:
Strongberry (on YouTube). They mainly make short films, but they're generally high quality.
GagaOOLala. If a Korean LGBT+ short film can't be found on YouTube, it's probably here.

This list is not just for me, by the way. It's for all of you guys! And you're more than welcome to leave suggestions in the form of a comment or even send me a message, regardless of whether we are friends or not.
Will contain spoilers, at least regarding a character's sexuality/gender. May or may not contain other spoilers; I will attempt to keep it just to what is related to the rep. You have been warned!

204. The Time of Fever
Korean Movie - 2024
#204
Main romance between two MLs.
My thoughts on the movie itself: A longing that in its infancy couldn't be realized. Brimming over with desire and shame, The Time of Fever captured the curiosity, confusion, and fear that often come with the experience of young love for Queer people. Chosen isolation, violent battles waged alone in your mind, denial, hesitant steps forward before sprinting away, jealousy, and parental abuse/distance.
The cinematography and sound design lent themselves to becoming the two MLs' senses, directing our attention to where their attention was. When Dong Hee picks up on Ho Tae's breathing and everything else goes quiet, when in a tension-filled moment, after allowing his gaze to linger, Ho Tae notices Dong Hee's eyes nervously flitting away from his own. The overwhelming grip of Ho Tae's hand on Dong Hee's shoulder, the taste of citrus on Dong Hee's tongue, and the scent of rain surrounding them and soaking both their clothes.
I was beckoned in and captured. Every moment was raw and real enough to make my own breath stop or send a shiver down my spine.
The only reason I considered giving this less than a 10/10 is because it sparked a longing in ME for more.

205. Night Flight
Korean Movie - 2014
#205
Main romance between two MLs.
I recommend this IF you can handle it. Read the tags first. This was an important but one-time watch for me for good reason.
You know when it feels like things are maybe going okay or are actually somewhat good and then reality splashes you in the face with a bucket of freezing cold water and then punches you a few times for good measure just to make sure you felt it? That's this movie.
Well done, sadly realistic, and impactful. But, did it have to hurt so fucking bad?
It's not a movie to sit back and enjoy but more a movie to either educate yourself, make you cry, and/or shed light on the harshness that someone else is likely experiencing/has experienced just because they existed. Can be found on YouTube

206. Love in the Big City
Korean Movie - 2024
#206
Features a Gay ML, Jang Heung Su.
My thoughts on the movie itself: Compared to the drama adaptation, while cheeky, this wasn't nearly as bold. Also, I do feel it's a bit unfair of me from the start to try to compare them when their focuses are so different. While the drama focused on the ML himself, his highs and lows, regrets and resolutions, this movie adaptation focused on his friendship with his best friend and felt more like a snapshot of a period of his life with someone important to him.
It was fun and I never felt like it tried to cater to the Straights, so, all in all, I'd call it a success! Nowhere near as spectacular as the drama, but that would be impossible, and they had different goals to begin with. That being said, should this have made me tear up at least once? Maybe.

207. Drama Festival 2014: The Diary of Heong Yeong Dang
Korean Special - 2014, 1 episode
#207
Features a Gay ML, Kim Sang Yun, who has feelings for his adoptive brother, Kim Hong Yeon.
After watching this, it is my belief that by the end of this special Hong Yeon finally came to terms with the fact that he truly loved Sang Yun. Before this, he also expressed affection for FL Min Hoe Jeong, which leads me to believe he is Bisexual.
My thoughts on the special itself: The costumes and sets looked cheap more often than not, but the performances from the actors (as well as the well-written dialogue) made up for it tenfold. I was truly moved.

208. Drama Special Season 14: TV Cinema - Behind the Shadows
Korean Special - 2023, 1 episode
#208
Features a Gay ML, Yoon Ho, and a more-than-likely Queer ML, Jae Woon, as well as more-than-implied mutual feeling between the two main MLs.
Regarding Yoon Ho, it's clear that he has had feelings for Jae Woon for quite some time. As for Jae Woon, when Yoon Ho dresses up as a courtesan woman to secretly confess to him if you read between the lines of what Jae Woon says and put it all together once you finish the special and know for certain that Jae Woon knew it was Yoon Ho the entire time, I think it's more than clear he also loved him.
Jae Woon's responses to Yoon Ho:
When Yoon Ho puts his appearance down while in disguise: "You're more beautiful than any other woman I have seen."
When Yoon Ho asks Jae Woon to turn around and stay still for a moment as he approaches him from behind:
Jae Woon: "Is it . . . Something about my back? I had a friend . . . Who would always walk behind my back quietly. You're doing the same . . . So I thought I would ask."
Yoon Ho: "Is it someone close?"
Jae Woon: "Yes. He's a friend . . . That's like a brother . . . No, he's just . . . Yoon Ho."
At the very end of the special, we get a revealing flashback to when Yoon Ho was lying down after not feeling well, and Jae Woon had brought him a flower. It turns out that Jae Woon was secretly looking at him in a romantic way. When he reached out and touched Yoon Ho's lips, he saw that he was waking and hurriedly backed away and pretended he was reading a book. To me, this just sealed the deal on what was otherwise clear if you paid attention.
My thoughts on the special itself: Artistic and tragic, this was a beautiful albeit heartbreaking watch. If only they lived in a different time, in a different place, where they could speak their feelings aloud without fear. And hold hands in the flesh, not as shadows on a wall.

Korean Movie - 2021

211. S.O.S
Korean Movie - 2015
#211
Features an Asexual FL.
Wow! This was a short film unlike any I've seen. The way they incorporated the colors of the Ace flag, placed you in the position of feeling like the woman during physical intimacy: crawling in your skin while hoping time speeds up, the quiet symbolism in the background. It was all so well-portrayed. I felt this truly spoke to the Ace experience.
Unlike some, I had a bit of a different interpretation regarding what the colors and, ultimately, the ending meant. The FL obviously dons the colors for the Ace flag, and then we have black and white. The Lesbian she meets up with and has sex with wears white, and her Straight boyfriend (and other assumed non-Queer people) wears black. By the end of the film, she gets in an elevator surrounded by people in black and chooses to zip up her black hoodie, declaring she is also black. To me, white represents the Queer Allosexual side, and black represents the Cis Hetero Allosexual (or Non-Queer Allosexual side, if you will). While she is truly Ace, she decides to conceal it. She could cover herself in white, but that would come with many more obstacles than if she took up the black mantle and blended in with the majority. Either way, she is concealing who she is; one comes with society's acceptance, though, making it the safer option. Can be found on GagaOOLala

Korean Drama - 2024, 7 episodes

Features a Queer SFL, Sim Eun Jeong , who has feelings for FL Im Ye Rim (they are also subtly implied to be reciprocated).

215. Somebody
Korean Drama - 2022, 8 episodes
#215
Features a Lesbian SFL, Im Mok Won. Coming out or confusion about sexuality also isn't an issue here.
The "reveal" scene to the audience is shown in Ep 2 through Mok Won flirting with a woman at a bar, with her later getting dropped off at home while the woman tries to get her number, to no avail. She came across as very "chill." Her attraction to women is casually brought up a few times later with her friends, and she also has a bit of a love interest.
With her innate style and intelligence/competence, while everyone else scrambled, I can definitely see why she was a fan favorite. She was certainly mine amid this dark and hopeless drama.
Overall, I was satisfied with the rep here. I can't say I'd recommend you watch it because of the rep, though. Or, honestly, recommend the drama just for its own merits. It was just . . . Too horrible for what felt like no reason to me.
My thoughts on the drama itself: It was deeply unsettling and disturbing, and made me feel an uncomfortable crawling in my skin. Undeniably, it was well-acted and shot to have made me have such a visceral reaction to it. Beyond that, I don't see what I'm supposed to have gotten from this drama, if anything.
Can't say I'd recommend it, to anyone, really. Can be found on Netflix

216. Matrimonial Chaos
Korean Drama - 2018, 32 episodes
#216
Features a Lesbian SFL, SFL Kang Ma Ru's roommate. Unfortunately, I was unable to find out this character's name.
From what I was able to read, Kang Ma Ru, FL Hwi Ru's younger sister, and her roommate have a possible blossoming romance if you will. Basically, it is acknowledged that Ma Ru and her roommate both care for each other. As for the roommate specifically, she does openly mention her being a Lesbian as well as gives a confession-of-sorts to Ma Ru.
This "reveal" may or may not take place in Ep 19 based on the date that viewers talked about this plotline. But, I can't say that for certain because I haven't seen this drama myself.
This seems like a pretty fun drama that I may just check out. At that time, I will update this accordingly.

217. Hometown Cha-Cha-Cha
Korean Drama - 2021, 16 episodes
#217
Features a Lesbian SFL, Yu Cho Hui, with unrequited feelings for her friend, FL Yeo Hwa Jeong.
In Ep 14, her sexuality is revealed through a flashback when she was younger, where her mother puts her down for being who she is and expresses anger toward her clear feelings for Hwa Jeong. From this point on, we learn not only about how she has been rejected by her mother but also how she has been dealing with keeping her feelings to herself. And through all of this, she makes the decision to embrace her sexuality. In Ep 15 Cho Hui finally confesses her past feelings, with Hwa Jeong readily accepting her and admitting she already knew "since back then."
Though very brief, I was quite pleased with the rep.

218. Mine
Korean Drama - 2021, 16 episodes
#218
One of the main FLs, Jeong Seo Hyun, is a Lesbian who is still very much in love with her first love, Suzy Choi. The reveal first occurs in Ep 2. From there, we watch Seo Hyun grow and not only open up to people around her about her sexuality but also find courage for herself.
In the end, it is heavily implied through a phone call that she and Suzy get back together.
What I particularly loved about the representation here was the pushback against religion condemning Homosexuality. For example, in the last episode, Mother Emma (the nun) says to Seo Hyun, "Let me apologize to you on behalf of the world that forced you to stay in the closet. I would like to apologize to you. It's not a sin, but you had to live your whole life hiding it as if it were a sin. Don't do that now."
I wouldn't say this drama is for everyone since it's very soap opera. It's loud, repetitive, and overly extravagant with just about everything. But the representation here is undoubtedly of quality.

227. Light Shop
Korean Drama - 2024, 8 episodes
#227
Features a romance between two FLs, Park Hye Won and Yun Seon Hae. In Ep 5, we see them move in together and learn they deal with prejudice and misunderstandings not just because they are a Lesbian couple but because of their age difference, with Park Hye Won being older and Yun Seon Hae being younger.
I don't want to spoil the drama at all, so unfortunately, I feel like that's all I can say. You'll just have to trust me when I say not only is Light Shop touching, but the representation is as well.
My thoughts on the drama itself: "I hope we don't meet again."

The way they jumped back and forth through the years made the story a bit of a confusing mess. Also, the timing of the subtitles was a few seconds slow, which was frustrating. It was cute and pretty well-acted for what it was, though. And it was nice to see them not shy away from the kiss.

260. Drama Festa: Hello Dracula
Korean Special - 2020, 2 episodes
#260
The main story features a Lesbian FL, Anna, who broke up with her girlfriend she was dating for eight years and is having a hard time with her mother because of her sexuality.
What I loved about this is that it didn't try to push aside the sins of the parent. It framed her mother in a sympathetic but just light. She did her daughter wrong. Now, it's time for her to be the parent she should have always been.
The message I came away with was: You are not wrong. They are the ones who are wrong.

Features Lesbian characters and couples.
Here's the thing: having a drama special be entirely about Lesbians is great. And the fact that this came out in 2011 at that (though it did get pulled) is something.
However, a big however, is that this just had to subtly dig at Bisexual women. Like, come on. If you're making a special that will be representing one part of the LGBT+ community, how about you don't drag down another part of that community in the process. Can't find any specific legal sites to watch it on. #271
Main romance between two FLs.
Regarding Ajin, she explicitly states that she is Bisexual. She also wants to date multiple people at the same time, so she is more than likely polyamorous as well.
My thoughts on the drama itself: The way they played into Biphobic stereotypes, making it seem like Ajin couldn't help but cheat because "Oh, no, I love two people" just pissed me off more and more as time went on.
IF YOU WANT TO DATE TWO PEOPLE, YOU SIT DOWN AND HAVE AN HONEST FUCKING CONVERSATION WITH THEM.
And to end it all with just a slap on the wrist?
I can't with this production company anymore.Link to YouTube Playlist: https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLYfaogVGCvwScMgbcMzyvGf-MGa81J0vj&si=Zyllfd1_81OW5VjD

273. Merry Queer
Korean TV Show - 2022, 9 episodes
#273
A reality show about three different Queer couples' stories/lives.
I'm just going to put my review here since I feel I have already best summarized my thoughts:
This, like His Man, is an important stepping stone for LGBT+ people in Korean media. Unlike that reality show, though, this had a lot of problems.
While I was ecstatic to hear about this show's release, I began feeling disappointed after watching a few episodes. The hosts wanted to open up the public's minds to Queer people, a noble goal. However, in the pursuit of this they often watered down vital concepts (like sexuality and gender) to the point of being incorrect and/or problematic, were more sympathetic toward parents of Queer children than the children themselves (they even said they were equally struggling), handled insults and dismissals from unaccepting parents with kiddie gloves, and failed to make a hard stand against bigotry.
I do get the sense that this was made with good intentions and that the hosts aren't bad people. But I feel like they cared so much about Straight people's perception of the show that they ended up catering to them to a fault. There was this sense that it was up to Queer people to keep trying to convince their family members and bend to make them more comfortable rather than the onus being on those being hateful and unaccepting.
All of this being said, I'm still glad this was made so I could see these Queer people's stories and so that, hopefully, Korea will portray more real Queer people on the screen. Can be found on GagaOOLala (with a VPN) or free websites (they have atrocious subtitles though)

275. Love Alarm Clap! Clap! Clap!
Korean TV Show - 2022, 13 episodes
#275
A reality dating show based on the K-Drama Love Alarm.
During the show, one contestant, Jasmine, asks out a female contestant she's interested in, White Rose. After this there is also a scene shown where she states to the camera she is Bi.
English subtitles aren't currently available for an international audience which makes understanding any finer details and wider context difficult. From what I've read, there is possibly another contestant who may or may not be Bi. If possible, I would like to watch this. We'll see if I'll be able to.

277. His Man
Korean TV Show - 2022, 11 episodes
#277
A reality dating show exclusively featuring Gay men.
I'm just going to put my review here since I feel I have already best summarized my thoughts on this show:
To think that it was only in 2020 when (arguably) the first Korean BL Drama (Where Your Eyes Linger) was released to now in 2022 when we have Korea's first Gay reality dating show is truly surreal.
They managed to make this show comforting but also not shy away from hardships. While watching I was wondering to myself if they were ever going to discuss coming out or the possible consequences of being on the show at all, only to see them dedicate one episode specifically to having everyone share their experiences and feelings on the matter. I felt like the creators of this show genuinely cared about Queer people and sharing their stories. I should also note that they did not try to sexualize anyone.
In Korea, we've gone from merely having some side LGBT+ characters to some dramas centered specifically around them and their romances to actually portraying real Queer people on the screen.
His Man and Merry Queer are important stepping stones, for sure. Let's not just stop here though. Let's keep going! Can be found on GagaOOLala or iQiyi

278. His Man Season 2
Korean TV Show - 2023, 14 episodes
#278
A reality dating show exclusively featuring Gay men.
My thoughts on the show itself: We once again got a genuine reality dating show with time to address the experience/struggle of being Queer/coming out. I felt this second season had even more heart to it than the first, actually. I will be eagerly awaiting the third season! Also, "Her Woman?" When? I WANT IT!
Can be found on iQiyi or GagaOOLala (with a VPN in Australia)

279. His Man Season 3
Korean TV Show - 2024, 14 episodes
#279
A reality dating show exclusively featuring Gay men.
My thoughts on the show itself: *sigh*
Another season of His Man and another season where I root for a ship and see such promise; it hits rocky seas, I find hope in some moments, and then the bow meets the rocks, and it all gets dashed to pieces. But it's fine. It's okay. I'm used to it.
In all seriousness, who ended/didn't end up with who aside? Can we stop for a moment to appreciate how amazing it is that we've gotten three seasons of His Man?! I thought S2 was a miracle! How far Korea has come in regard to Queer representation in media in just the last few years!
Here's the thing: Much as I adore this show, though, how I do adore His Man, I have to take a full point off for not following up with the other participants at the end. Because why? You can't show me the outcome for some and then just leave me hanging with the rest like that! Can be found on iQiyi

280. ToGetHer
Korean TV Show - 2025, 14 episodes
#280
A reality dating show exclusively featuring Queer women.
My thoughts on the show itself: For Korea's first Queer reality dating show exclusively for women, I thought this was a thoughtful endeavor and a great step forward pushing real life representation. Compared to His Man, chance, competition, and missions played less of a part in determining dates. I felt this created a more mellow atmosphere for all the participants, with heartfelt notes, small interactions, and group meals/events making feelings develop more naturally and thoughtfully over time.
All this praise being said, I did find the finale lacking. I felt we didn't get to hear enough from everyone, and wish the time was spread more equally between all of them to get their final thoughts/feelings.

Will watch when possible with decent subtitles
Main romance between two MLs.
Update: I can't seem to find a way to watch this. Looks like I'll have to put it on hold until we get a good fansubber or they put it on a platform outside of Watcha.
Update: From what I've read about those who have watched through this is that us viewers end up getting played as it is more Bromance than Romance, with the only clear Queer character being the villain with a tragic ending. So maybe it's a good thing I haven't yet found an avenue to watch it as I would have to suffer through it for nothing. Lol.
Can be found on Watcha (with a VPN) without English subtitles
