Cdramas for girl power
I really like strong female leads, but I thought a lot of online recs seem to miss a point. A better way is probably to sort them, so here's my attempt.
Cat 1: show has a conscious focus on female empowerment / issues. You can tell the writers like women.
Cat 2: strong FL who is not outshone by her ML. She is at least as capable and important to the story as he is.
Cat 3: strong FL, although she's still not as amazing as her ML (but still as important to the story). A lot of shows seem to want both the strong FL and a knight in shining armor to save her, so a lot of recs end up here.
I'll list any show I've watched, even the ones I didn't like- since everyone likes different things.

1. Blossoms in Adversity
Chinese Drama - 2024, 40 episodes
Cat 1. The men are gone and the women need to learn to flourish... and flourish they do. The entire show is about female empowerment. Full review
-
2. Glory
Chinese Drama - 2025, 36 episodes
Cat 1. The writers came up with this slightly implausible, powerful, matriarchal family, so we could watch a bunch of women lead a bunch of men around by their noses. Full review
-
3. Unveil: Jadewind
Chinese Drama - 2026, 34 episodes
Cat 1. The cases focus on women and women's issues, all portrayed very sympathetically. Full review
-
4. She and Her Girls
Chinese Drama - 2024, 23 episodes
Cat 1. Not my usual genre, but yes, it is about female empowerment. Full review
-
5. Dream of Golden Years
Chinese Drama - 2026, 36 episodes
Cat 1. Actually female empowerment is only part of it, but there is such strong hero focus on a single female protagonist, I'll round it to Cat 1. Full review
-
6. Sword Rose
Chinese Drama - 2025, 32 episodes
I have a hard time categorizing this. I guess I'd put it at a high Cat 2. A lot of the victims are women but I don't think the focus is on gender issues per se. The main character is female but her gender is kind of irrelevant. Full review
-
7. The Double
Chinese Drama - 2024, 40 episodes
Cat 2. Personally I think she outshines him, but it's debatable. Full review
-
8. A Moment but Forever
Chinese Drama - 2025, 36 episodes
Cat 2. Ji Tanyin is by far the more powerful, smart, in control one of the pair, and I absolutely love her. Full review
-
9. Legend of the Female General
Chinese Drama - 2025, 36 episodes
Cat 2. There is some female empowerment talk but it's so context-less, I don't think this qualifies for Cat 1. Full review
-
10. Veil of Shadows
Chinese Drama - 2026, 29 episodes
Cat 2? Personally I feel the FLs were less important than the MLs, but hard to say. Full review
-
11. Qingchuan's Veil of Vengeance
Chinese Drama - 2025, 18 episodes
Cat 2. It's a short drama and kind of dark. Full review
-
12. Fated Hearts
Chinese Drama - 2025, 38 episodes
Cat 2... unless you want to disqualify the whole thing because the FL gets abandoned and forgotten in the second half. But at least, from the premise, she should be a solid Cat 2. Full review
-
13. Who Rules the World
Chinese Drama - 2022, 40 episodes
Cat 2. Bai Fengxi is the best part of this show. Full review
-
14. Echoes of the Self
Chinese Drama - 2025, 22 episodes
Cat 2. Short drama and the FL is the star, I feel like ML is just eye candy decoration. Full review
-
15. Love in the Clouds
Chinese Drama - 2025, 36 episodes
Cat 2. I did not like her very much but, ok, she qualifies. Full review
-
16. How Dare You!?
Chinese Drama - 2026, 32 episodes
Cat 2, maybe? Full review
-
17. Royal Rumours
Chinese Drama - 2023, 24 episodes
Cat 2, although her sickly act gets a little annoying. Full review
-
18. Coroner's Diary
Chinese Drama - 2025, 38 episodes
Cat 2. I didn't like her, but I begrudgingly admit that she qualifies, she is both more important and more capable. Full review
-
19. Shadow Love
Chinese Drama - 2025, 38 episodes
Cat 2. I liked neither this show nor the heroine but I begrudgingly grant her Cat 2 status. Full review
-
20. Back from the Brink
Chinese Drama - 2023, 40 episodes
Cat 3... maybe 2. I really like Yanhui and think she's really smart, even though she's not that powerful for most of it. But I kind of want to upgrade her to Cat 2 just for her great attitude. Full review
-
21. Love of the Divine Tree
Chinese Drama - 2025, 40 episodes
Cat 2 or Cat 3 depending on which FL you're thinking of. Full review
-
22. The Blue Whisper: Part 1
Chinese Drama - 2022, 22 episodes
Cat 3? Or is it Cat 2? I feel she is still a little outshadowed by him. Full review
-
23. The Long Ballad
Chinese Drama - 2021, 49 episodes
Cat 3. Changge has some growing to do and I didn't always like her, but she qualifies for Cat 3. Full review
-
24. The Legend of Shen Li
Chinese Drama - 2024, 39 episodes
Cat 3. Could not be more Cat 3. FL saved over and over by OP ML. Full review
-
25. Pursuit of Jade
Chinese Drama - 2026, 40 episodes
Cat 3. I started out liking her but she started to get on my nerves. Full review
-
26. The Demon Hunter's Romance
Chinese Drama - 2025, 36 episodes
Cat 3, if you consider Banxia a strong FL... I think she kind of grows into it. Full review
-
27. Under the Power
Chinese Drama - 2019, 55 episodes
Cat 3. It's practically the definition of Cat 3. The rest of the show has a mix of strong women and infuriatingly sexist things. Full review
-
28. Love Game in Eastern Fantasy
Chinese Drama - 2024, 32 episodes
Humm.... ok I'll be honest, I don't really remember. I think it's Cat 3. Full review
-
29. The Imperial Coroner
Chinese Drama - 2021, 36 episodes
Cat 3, I think. I mean she has a skill he doesn't, but the ML definitely took the lead on everything. Full review
-
30. Falling into Your Smile
Chinese Drama - 2021, 31 episodes
Cat 3. Not my usual genre (is modern) and mostly just about a romance. Full review
-
31. Arsenal Military Academy
Chinese Drama - 2019, 48 episodes
Cat 3. And the whole thing is mostly about love triangles anyways. Full review
-
32. Eternal Love of the Fox
Chinese Drama - 2026, 24 episodes
Uh... Cat 3. It's a short show, though. Full review
-
33. Wanru's Journey
Chinese Drama - 2023, 24 episodes
Cat 3? I mean at some point she turns pretty capable, but it's random and poorly done, just like the rest of the show. Full review
