I see what you’re saying and I understand the sentiment. But I differ in opinion because the show is already good at showing the balance without preaching at us it’s ideologies on what is “evil” or what we consider evil.
The don’t think that “that’s how things were in the past” is a flawed statement because it’s a real thing and that characters of this show were a product of their time, yet still showing that they are their own people with their own struggles and sufferings. They’re just living their lives, and although we aren’t in their time, we can relate to her because it is in her POV and we’re experiencing her life. I also disagree about “it’s fine to depict racism for “realism” sake while not acknowledging it was bad then and it is bad now” — because we know that racism is wrong; and there are real people who lived at that time — who went through suffering that made them stronger. But this isn’t it. My problem actually with a lot of movies nowadays is sometimes they’re so focused in the message of “social issues”, but end up having one-dimensional weak-written characters, which I think is worse.
On top of that, that’s not what this show is about. It’s about shaoshang and Li Buyi’s story and I love her story.
I also watched “easy at mr lin” just for lusi but the plot was meh 😂
