I'm also gonna say, I hate shows with blatant propagandas too. I prefer shows with people that experience suffering and are strong because of it. Imo, Shaoshang isn't a strong, independent woman just for the sake of being strong. She wasn't a Mary Sue. She's flawed, and human. Actually the characters that I liked all have their quirks. What makes her likeable and "strong" is also her flaw because she has to learn to open her heart and trust LBY fully. on top of that, this also shows that the characters that grew up with a silver spoon (ie. 3rd princess, 5th) are often spoiled. Suffering is part of life, but that suffering made SS, SS
Also, I think if this show was written in this climate, LBY wouldn't be the LBY that we like. he'd be written weakly.
that's an interesting take. but imo I don't see anything wrong with it as it is the storyline and the drama is following the source material. I know many shows nowadays try to push an agenda; however, I don't think this show is pushing a certain ideology, but I think that is what you interpreted the show to do. This show is showing us the life of SS, her challenges and growth and her love story with 3 men and LBY.
Yes, if we focus on the "evil patriarchal society" we can complain about it, but that's how they lived back then. But they're not pushing an ideology. They're telling a beautiful story. So if you feel it's too conservative and it's a turn off it's fine. But I loved this drama for all of it. And it is just a drama.
I wonder if they will change the reason why LBY gets flogged in 38. Maybe the Emperor finds out about the tiger…
100%. I’ve enjoyed this show a lot. I’m also a binge-watcher, so I usually watch a show after it’s completed, but I’ve definitely broken my streak. So definitely kudos to the director and especially the leads. This show has been my favorite this 2022! :)

Oh I see interesting. I do think as someone who hasn’t read the novel I don’t mind, but I think it would glare at you if you read it. I do love this drama a lot more than I originally thought I would. Not just because of Lusi and Wu Lei. But the plot is beautifully written and all the other actors are great too!
This is the time I’m jealous that there’s no English translation of the novel. I would love to read it.

Oh I see. That’s a little downer, but I’m also not surprised. I think if you’ve read the novel you’ll definitely feel something with adaptations. How do you feel about this one compared to other adaptations? I just hope this gave it justice?
Also when does the book end went off the novel? Or is it still according to the novel?
There was this unhinged YY stan on the WRTW page who was spouting all kinds of hate on ZLS, calling her unprofessional…
I do watch shows because of the actors, which is why I wanted to watch WRTW, I liked YY and loved Lusi, I watched all her dramas lol. I shipped them too, but now I’m like she looks so good with Wu lei.
