Most western shows ran 23 episodes a year. Except for the few dramas, each show would stand on its own, occasionally there would be a part 2 that would air the very next week. The dramas also ran for 23 weekly episodes. I don't know where you came up with that 2 month mid season break. I never saw that. Dallas, Dynasty, Knots Landing, etc...ran continuously till the "cliffhanger" . Cliffhangers were special! The whole season led up to the cliffhanger, and it was memorable, and yes, you waited for episode 1 of next season to see what happened. That is not the same as just halting a drama in the middle and simply restarting it later.
