LCY is a cold blooded killer. The murder of the enemy who killed his friend is a statement of LCY's character ie. he uses whatever means he sees fit to achieve his objectives.
But, he is a human after all. He fell in love in XF and even in his amnesia, he can never forget the scene he first time saw XF. Peeping Tom.
His love for XF is deeply embedded in his subconscious.
So sad they dubbed Chen Xingxu. Still, gorgeously made drama that ripped me to shreds.
CXX's real voice is too deep for his character.
He was only 23 when he starred in this series. But, his acting was brilliant for a young actor. Although his character in the drama is completely different from the book.
I prefer LCY in the book as he is portrayed to be a young and carefree man who falls in love for the first time with XF and enjoys a temporary carefree life in Western Liang with the woman he loves until he carries out the masscre of the tribe.
I hope there will be a remake and the storyline follows exactly what is in the book. That will be hard to make but LCY's character has to be as ruthless as it can be in order to bring the character out of the novel into the drama.

Even XF in the book could never forgive him for what he had done to her family.
I can't think of a current actor who can act LCY's character except Huang Xiao Ming and Luo Jin, Hu Ge and Wang Kang . But, they are already past their prime.
Arthur Chen is a possible candidate. And, of course, Chen Xing Xu again. I personally would love to have CXX play this character if there is ever a remake.

Agree. I tried to watch it in the winter 2019 but never finished it off. I only recently completed the entire series and loved it so much until I read the novel in English.

Zhao Se Se's story is another tragic one. She was treated by LCY as if she was worth nothing to him.
LCY's character in the book is very pragmatic and decisive when it comes to removing his enemies from the court. However, he is never destined to be together with XF who is too simple minded and innocent from the brutal imperial court.
XF was never raised to be a queen/ diplomat by her parents. She was forced into the heqin practice.
So, XF is doomed from the moment she is captured alive and sent to the Li Empire.

That's why she chooses death than life so that she can avenge for the massacre that LCY inflicted on her grandfather's tribe.
She got what she wanted: LCY lived for another thirty years following XF's death but his heart died with XF.
LCY had actually allowed XF's body to return to Western Liang following her death. Following the death of his daughter, LCY committed suicide by jumping off the wall where XF had jumped 30 years ago.
Depends on which ending you choose to consider. The ending in ep 30 is open leaving whether they end up together…
No one time travelled except LAR. MZ overheard LAR's story in her sleep. MZ's letter of divorce for LAR is accompanied with a letter. In that letter, MZ said LAR spoke about her previous life in her sleep. She also mentioned about her being in love with MZ in her previous life.
In that letter, MZ said he wished to be that MZ in that life because LAR loved him.
I find MZ a tragic figure. Sad but he had someone who loved him dearly ie. Xiao Jing Yue but he loved LAR. Just like his previous life ie. LAR loved him but he loved the throne more.
