It is a plot device. He himself is choosing to fake act like a douche. As you said, you can't fake feelings, yet here he is faking his feelings, or lack of feelings for her. But that makes no sense, considering his incredible love/protectiveness for her. Clearly unnecessary.

Yes he never took advantage of her, but he could've done other things like locking his room. Doing this would at least give Yifan some sense of assurance that he's listening to what she wants. She literally says lock your room if you have to. The guy instead says things like he's scared. His actions in the 1st 14 ep are problematic, bcuz they don't match who he really is.

Both stories may be different, but there are similarities, but the main point I bring it up is bcuz He Suye's character is what I would expect from someone like Sang Yan. Or at least an inkling of him. Instead Sang Yan is a polarizing character in the 1st 14 ep.

Must've missed those scenes, but still doesn't change that he shouldn't have let her sleep w/ him in his bed. I know he's supportive & I know he'll never take advantage of her, but his actions when she knows it & when she doesn't are problematic, bcuz they don't match. He says one thing & does the other. He teases her, but their new relationship wasn't even that stable yet, especially considering how dismissive he is of her at times. His character in the 1st 14 or so ep doesn't work.
PS The comparison is actually not a comparison, but rather a suggestion (at least my thought of what matches his character &) of how he should've been written.

Nah, Sang Yan's just not written well IMO. The writers want the douche-ness for no reason other than it's a popular cliché trope. It doesn't really match his character at all & makes his character for the 1st 14 or so ep really polarizing. I know he's faking his disinterest in her, despite being nothing, but interested. It still doesn't change that it's rather annoying & out of character for someone so in love.

He "draws" a line, but he's constantly the one that crosses it. Yifan subconsciously crosses so she has no control. So it's up to him to do something about it. But instead he fake acts like he's the one in danger & all that. He also lets things play out instead of actually doing something progressive like leading her back into her room. He lets her sleep w/ him. And when he does talk to her, he's roundabout, dismissive, sarcastic or even trying to make himself a victim. I know he's a good guy who will never harm her, but like you, I do agree his character comes off problematic. He simply should've been written as a softer character rather than this.

PS I just recently watched Best Thing & the ML He Suye is exactly what Sang Yan should be. He's extremely soft, kind & supportive, but can tease the FL often. The FL was heartbroken & suffered from insomnia, but he knew where to draw the line & never oversteps. She even kissed him drunk once & when he confessed the next time she was sober she didn't want to proceed w/ the relationship bcuz she had her reasons. Still he was there to support. Sorry, even I'm venting now. LOL!

Some people get caught in the actors & emotions they lose track of these things.

This drama was heavily & I mean heavily carried by the Actors & the emotions. That's why I agree that Sang Yan is very 1-D. His entire personality revolves around protecting/loving Yifan. As such he comes off as having no life outside of her.

He really did get a pass bcuz he's the Male Lead & good looking. I also thought it was too much. Really should've shown some maturity on his side & have him leave her alone until their reunion later as adults.

You mean “action, romance, comedy, mystery, spy, high school series.” Romance was always a part of it.
It’s okay to not like the romance, but you should’ve said that from the start. Your original post said “so unnecessary” instead of “didn’t need + if it was better written.” Very different meanings. Now you’re more detailed w/ your point & are saying the romance is lacking & could be better which is a fair point.

Ok, my bad. I stand corrected so let me rephrase your opinion: "This romcom's romance is unnecessary." Either way you spin it your opinion doesn't really stand well.

And even if they didn't, they should still know & understand what the show will be about after the 1st 2 episodes. If someone can't figure out the genre & premise of a show after the 1st 2 ep then something's wrong.

The hair stuff along w/ things like Lee MinHo isn't "handsome enough" are super ridiculous things to complain about. But the sword bit is aimed towards Jisoo's character, Lee JiHye, who mainly uses a sword. It is vital & not trivial as the powers that these characters wield are based & borrowed from mythological, historical & fantasy entities. For example Lee JiHye borrows her power from Admiral Yi & receives all his skills like naval battling & using a sword. Admiral Yi probably wouldn't be all that good w/ a sniper rifle. I feel I needed to explain this thoroughly for you bcuz the other fans are doing a bad job at explaining the significance/importance of it.

With all that being said, I still think the fans are doing one of many dumb thing fans always do, judging the book by it's cover yet again. At least wait for a full trailer bcuz she might wield a sword in the actual trailer or even the movie. Still, for me at least, I think it looks good so far & can't wait.

The show’s quite frustrating w/ how the characters act along w/ how the show is just so dull & slow. It’s almost half way & the show has barely started. If you have 8 ep you need to move fast & not slow. This is probably going to a lukewarm show. Sorry not sorry.

My advice is just drop it. How I see it your perception & thoughts have already been made up . If you were more open to the idea then go right ahead, but I can tell you won’t change your mind.

A bit self defeating w/ your own question. “How can anyone take this parody seriously?” It’s quite clear only you are taking this show seriously & that’s why you don’t like it.

I've sort of quit lakorn, bcuz I only have so much brain cells I can sacrifice (LOL) so I don't know many modern 1's
Anyways, if ur still interested thz are the one's I've watched that have rivals that become 2nd Couple. While they aren't Lakorn they are of that style.

- Master's Sun, Kdrama: Ghost Romance. a guard for a mall, who's not interested in a diva, actress, who's the model of the mall, but... This 1 is cute & the ending is sweet.

-Spy MyungWol, Kdrama: Spy, Romance, the 2nds are a N. Korean Spy & a rich girl. She starts liking him, while he's nice 2 her, but wants 2 keep distance. Open ending.

-Crash Landing On You, Kdrama: Spy, Romance, N.Korean heiress & a S.Korean con-artist fall in love. A tragic 1, unfortunately.

-Romance of Hua Rong2, Cdrama, Wuxia, Romance, A nobleman falls in love with a Female Bandit Leader. Note: this is a sequel & the rivalry of the girls is pretty short due 2 them being friends.

-Why Women Love, Cdrama, Office, Romance, A mature businessman & a outspoken immature girl work together 4 their interests, but....... Nice ending.

Thz are the only ones I can remember off the top of my head. Sorry not much help.
