I don't understand Dr. Xu's disgust towards XQ. I get that she comes across cold and distant, but her ability to always remain calm in emergency situations is what also helps her be such a great surgeon. I also think that her attitude of 'All life has value and its my duty to save lives regardless of whether patients thank me or not' is good to have, as well as understanding that medicine does have limits and she can only work within those limits so its not her fault if medicine cannot save patients sometimes. Sure, it might be good if she took more pride in her work, but I don't think she deserves the criticism that she got from him.
They do get into a fight in 22(might be 23) and that she makes him spend nearly a whole episode apologizing for, but no breakup. Her anger is justified.
The brother is not the one who hurt Song Yan. He was innocent in this and only found out after he heard Xu Qin.…
Personally, I viewed their relationship dynamic as more codependent than romantic. I think he mistook his love for her as romantic love when in reality they just latched onto the only good thing they had in their life at the time. While MYC does come across as creepy at times, and their dynamic is certainly unhealthy (more him than her), its more based in that he is afraid to lose the one good thing he has in his life. He was okay with her marrying someone besides SY because a loveless marriage was not a threat to his relationship with her, but her marrying SY is because she won't need him anymore if she has someone else she loves and relies on.
I'm just now starting to watch the show, but I read the book.....please tell me they don't try to wrap up the issues her parents in a nice neat happy package....because I don't know anyone that could just 'water under the bridge' that.

I also think people need to remember that originally XQ was taken in by them at 10/11 to be a ward not their daughter, and in the book they explain that their bond developed almost immediately(pretty much out of survival and necessity for both of them). She was only adopted by the family when she was 13/14, the mother insisted because she saw their close bond. She wanted to send a clear message to them that they were not allowed to be anything other than brother/sister towards each other. XQ agreed to give up her family name and accept the adoption, only because she was terrified of being sent back to the orphanage. The show makes it seem like she was picked up by them within a day or two from her parents death, but the book tells you she spent months in an orphanage being starved and abused....which makes you understand why she and her brother latched onto each other a lot more...and why she struggled so much to stand up to her mother. She lived in constant fear of being sent back to that place.
I still think it bothered him (in episode 4) to realize she was the girl he saved. He was developing feelings for her already, and I think it upset him to think that her feelings might not be real.
Just finished the book. I think the show did a better job of creating a well rounded story with more fleshed out side characters. but there were a few things I liked better about the book, mainly the resolution between him, his brother, and their parents.
