And he wasn't the one who got recognition with Alchemy of souls. Career of actress Go Youn Jung flew into the stratosphere after AOS 2. She probably got more recognition than him (Jung So Min got recognition way before AOS, so I'm not mentioning her). The reason Byun Woo Seok got more popularity I wrote in the first comment, but also want to add his agency working really hard to promote him. The similar example with his promotion is actress Han So Hee. She doesn't have many popular works, but her agency promoting her very well. So there are different reasons some actors getting more recognition than actresses except their gender. They can be idols, their characters can be more attractive to the audience, or their agency promoting them better.
