Whatever the ratings are, there is one thing that is standing out and that is performances of the leads. I hope they get more and more roles to continue to refine their talent backed by good scripts and directors. They deserve it!

Douban has been controversial for a while and as any rating it is subjective to the people rating it right? Even here at MDL will rate their fans dramas high whether everyone agrees or not is debatable.

The drama actually deviated from the novel quite a bit in the first episodes itself by setting up XZ against Rufei. So this was bound to happen, given that I for one am watching it as a different story from the novel with the characters spirit being the same. CZ in the novel too was grey, he sided with the wrong people and also sent his servant to death willingly...also pursued HY even after she was engaged. HY for everyone wondering why she advocates for him..while she does not do it openly in the novel she does not spurn him decidedly even after the engagement which angers XZ...so I think given how they changed the story that essence still remains.

I think Tencent and the director realized they struck gold with this pairing so they went all out with promoting them! I'm not complaining, love them both!

I know - its super confounding to me to read these comments... Why can't I cook or sew for the one I love even if I am a badass on the battlefield? My hubs cooks/does things for me all the time and vice versa - its a sign of love and affection and in HY's case, she just wants to feel like what the other women are feeling. The embroidery as you said is super important - and it was a defining moment in the novel - so im excited to watch it unfold!

She was trained by XJ's father and XJ himself when they were in school so she trusts him. He also give her light when none existed; so it was but natural for her to go to him. She had nobody else. She also empathizes with his choices as a general, being one herself..so it does not seem odd at least to me. Again, totally your choice to watch!

Random comment - but ZY and CL have been presented really well in this drama. Whoever did their styling and makeup did a great job with it, because you cannot get your eyes off of them when they are on screen!

Fantastic episodes today, setting up the next conflict sooooo well! Loved Episode 20 - one of the best in the series, ZY's change of expressions was great in both episodes...and also like how they introduced Yang Mingzhe and Yan He - this is the perfect set up for the big reveal...I have liked the changes in the drama so far; my only other gripe besides the background score which was much better in these 2 episodes, was a longer battle section in Jiyang. I think in fact they might have had it that way, but censors likely cut 4 episodes down to make a tauter narrative. The drama is being carried by the leads - ZY and CL they are both doing a phenomenal job!

But she does! What about the poison save from Ding Yi? The powder from the assassins? It does not always have to be in war!

In the novel, she was pregnant with her first husband's (she marries XJ later) child. Despite that, he helps her family blind her and then drown her. Scum of the earth they were. They did not have enough episodes or budget to bring in her family and all of that. I also feel it would have been similar to the Double had they shown all that, which is written by the same author.

100% agree, all the actors have done a great job with the action scenes, love ZY and CL in this show!

Yes, they had enough material to make it 60 episodes+.

In addition to what others said, the ratings are high because the actors have excellent chemistry and they play their parts very well, very true to the novel characterization and what you expect them to be.

The main theme of the novel was not wars; they were part of her growth story. The novel and this adaptation tells us that - its the FL finding her own path, outside of someone's shadow. She chose to be a military general, but she could very well have been a doctor too.

Yes novel didnt have that great a story; harem struggles for the most part, so will see how they execute the adaptation. Knowing XY though her script selection is good, Scent of time being another example of something nobody was expecting to be good and it turned out great!

Yeah..Ive read the novel and there are some delicious scenes in it which if executed well will have fire on screen; however it is completely different from this one; I love how XY selects characters totally different from the previous roles she has had.
