My best advice to newcomers:DON'T READ ANY REVIEWS, JUST JUMP IN, AND SEE FOR YOURSELF!I was gonna write, it all…
It has received a lot of love, 1.2 billion views and trending number 1 for several weeks and a Netflix telecast next is testament to its success. Never mind the haters, the numbers speak for themselves.
I've been thinking a bit since finishing this. I wish we had seen more of her rise in the army the first time…
They did film 40 episodes, but it got cut at the censorship and scandal with one of the actors on the show..so im sure this would have been part of it.
Cheng Lei looks smoking hot in all the promos..not jazzed about how he looks with the FL though, his chemistry with ZY was amazing, will give this a chance though!
People complaining about that aspect just dont have the background that the novel provides. She is described exactly…
100 percent they are super harsh, because of their own misplaced expectations from the title and of course those who read the novel finding that it does not meet their expectations. To each his own I guess!
Seeing a lot of complaints that He Yan was too soft for a female general makes me wonder if it really is that…
People complaining about that aspect just dont have the background that the novel provides. She is described exactly like this there - frail, puny looking and like someone who cant even lift a pebble. Yet, she throws stones and boulders and has enormous strength. She also does not go about killing and stabbing people at will and also does not break into a fight every 2 seconds. It is a growth journey of her finding her identity and not hiding behind someone else's. The drama was unable to show that cohesively, hence the incessant complaints. The playful scenes with the commander are also exactly as written; but for someone who has not read the novel, I can understand getting irritated with those scenes, because the trailers were misleading with a lot of fight scenes being promoted, so they expected a war like scene every episode.
Posting my comments finally, since I finished watching all episodes yesterday. Overall: It was a fun watch, ZY and CL carried the show. Story: Given the strong base the novel had, the show did a good job of recreating the key events, however the editing, and the build up to the reveal was not impactful. The direction felt choppy in a lot of places and the script fell apart in the CZ madness which was not required at all. Acting: CL and ZY were AMAZING and the show has rewatch value for that alone. I would rewatch the iconic confession scenes, the confrontation with Rufei and the battle scenes just to see their performances which were top notch! Give them a better script and director, I think they will be elevated even more. ZK as CZ was expressionless, I could not feel his pain, his delusional side or love. Minister Xu actually acted well and was a good choice for the main villain, Rufei was good in the jail scene, otherwise was reduced to be a bit of a caricature. I loved the bois, I wish they had more screen time. Did not like Taotao and Cheng Lisu, but its not their fault, they fell prey to the chopping block. Other General Comments: As a novel reader, I was not expecting a faithful adaptation so I was not super disappointed, since you can never really do justice. It was unfortunate with the editing and cutting of episodes - the abrupt endings - it all pointed to lost connectivity and impacted the overall story-telling. I will rate this a 8.5/10 since ultimately the story needs to capture your attention - Despite those flaws, ZY and CL really held me and they are my HY and XZ forever, hence the higher rating, just for them.
Drama may not satisfy everyone, but to me it did. Everyone has their own tastes, but if you aren't going to finish…
100% agree with you. The fact that it even aired is a big deal given how much pre-drama it had frankly more than the drama itself had! Loved the leads and they keep XJ and HY alive for me at least!
Ah! I’m so excited for Red Dance (Dancing) Shoes! 🥹 It’s such a heavy drama, but I know she’ll absolutely…
I felt that way too, that her company does not promote her enough...a lot of actors that dont even act well are getting dramas left, right and center and here we are dying for news about her next drama. No hate towards the actresses I am talking about - I just dont like them (Esther Yu, Wang Chu Ran, Bai Lu).
Zhou Ye was excellent in Scent of Time but here, the general character does not suit her.
I also thought she and Cheng Lei were the best parts of the drama and she played He Yan exactly like how the novel and the drama wrote her to be. Respect your opinion though!
To do complete justice to the story, they needed likely 2 seasons with about 30 episodes each or the old style…
I get that..my point was to make it more impactful, you need more time and also to create more sympathy for the characters or hate for the villains. That was where the shortcoming was in the directing, editing and scripting..I think if they had held those scenes longer and given a better build up for that final climax, it would have been better. I still liked it TBH, cause I thought the leads did a great job with what they were given.

There was significant amount of backstory to fully appreciate HY's revenge and also why they did what they did. It would have been more impactful. Since they changed XJ's arc as well, his backstory was needed as well.
I really loved the drama but it should have been either a 32 ep drama or a 40 ep one.
To do complete justice to the story, they needed likely 2 seasons with about 30 episodes each or the old style dramas with 65 episodes. I also did not think there was enough budget they spared for this drama.
I still have to watch the last 6 episodes..so will savor them for sure!!! One thing I wanted to say reading all the comments here: For me, more than the story (which I know the drama did not do full justice to), I was looking forward to how they would portray HY and XJ - that the drama delivered and delivered big time. The script and direction DID NOT do justice to how talented they are and how much chemistry they have. I hope they can get together in another drama where this is better explored! Will post final reviews after I watch the last episodes, to me ZY and CL were the stars of the show and they have a fan in me :)
