His older brother got all the brains in that family, for sure! Pingwen never listens, never stops talking, and…
you're totally right. But the ML wouldn't be GPY we know if he haven't had someone like his brother to protect and help him grow up. Thinking about the real life, I personally function way better when taking care/protecting other people, especially those who have no clue, like Ping Wen
Apparently, some MDL reviewers didn't think this C-drama deserves even a lowly 8.2 & decided to downrate it…
the algorithm counts even the drop of initial 19 votes per ep to 3 per ep, no matter the vote is higher, it will downrate it, bc, it counts the missing ones as people who don't watch it any more. And ofc., many people who've tried, decided not to watch any more and dropped, they are into romances whatever... so that's it for the algorithm. But don't worry, the final verdict of votes is what counts MORE, the votes expressed are less than the 11th share of the viewers (and whose overall number actually rises), I personally never rated a drama before it ended or I've dropped it somewhere around the ending
His older brother got all the brains in that family, for sure! Pingwen never listens, never stops talking, and…
I actually feel the same about him as you, from the first moment I've seen him: omg, this bro is so frustrating. But, such characters are necessary and functional for the pacing
GPY should have known about the tea merchants' association though. Even with his nose in his books, growing up…
I've also feared the plot hole when he gave them the recipe for Orchid Snow: I've expected the association would betray him and sell the tea to LWT. But the author smartly used this detail to rise the tension and our expectation in a bad exit of the whole "best tea under heavens" adventure, keeping us at the edge of our seats till the last moment. Translated: whether he knew the tea association or forgotten how their mind can work or how much they can be scared during his exile years is irrelevant. He didn't make a deal with all the members of the association. He made a deal with their chief. He passed the honorary plaque to the association and gave them the receipe how to produce a pro version of the tea they were growning without asking anything for himself, without asking any change in their associative structure. Just by accepting these 3 things, they've OWNED him and if he asked for backing (actually, he asked foor just a day more), they could not say no any more. The association chief understood this, as well as he understood GPY is not a fool and has other "backers"
Fortunately GPY has the eight family fortune…what a risky business. However I felt this move on selling directly,…
We felt so bc. we didn't know ALL the front(wo)men of 8 families, how strong and capable they really are. This master Wu is for the export of silk a sort of pendant for what Li wannabe for the tea export, but there's a huge difference between them in: 1. how they do business, 2. what is their backing 3. how they relate with people they deal with. 8 families people: 1. mind not to enrich only themselves but also their business partners, care a lot about each other, of talents like GPY and of the overall "wealth of the nation" 2. instilled sense of order, fair-trade, honour... values in general. Tend to avoid conflicts with authorities, but have no problems to deal with them, their ancestors fought (and robbed, lol) the Mings, why would they fear the Qings? 3. they treat people as they deserve. Fairly towards fair people, united in scheming against people who are not. LWT: 1. cares only about himself. In competition even with his own son(s), sees the world only through the lenses of utilitarism. If his counterpart is in trouble, instead of providing help, he'll help to accelerate his demise. 2. Just Prince Gong. He has no family background or any other durable relationship except Ms. Su, who seems to be a daughter of his "backer" before Prince Gong - this relationship stands bc. they both cover for each other... a kind of relation that may blow up in any moment 3. in general, he treats people like sh*t, a servitude to carry on his plans, being himself servile to the power person he follows like a dog
If anybody wonders why the Foreign Trade Office chief couldn't order GPY to be punished with lashes... as a "sort of official" (ie. being appointed by Dowager Empress to a service of public interest), he was exempted from corporal punishments: if a person who detained public office was found guilty of certain crime or trasgression, the penalty (measured in number of blows to be inflicted) ought to be substituted with pecuniary fine (eg. 10 lashes were substituted with an amount corresponding to 1 month salary). This peculiar law disposition originated from the exemptions granted to Manchu military and civil officers (immediately extended to Mongol officers operating under the 8 Banners, then included Han officers part of the Banners' system before it was finally extended to all officials)
Mr. Hart is not only proficient in Mandarin but is also an expert in the Qing Code. I wonder if such a high ranking Qing official of Western origin really existed in history. If you know smth., pls,. let me know. Btw., the actor is excellent, pity this messy MDL cast list doesn't even mention him.
His purpose is to be a fictional legendary hero who walked through the different phases of Chinese history, surviving…
amanah was talking about the bro, Ping Wen. His purpose is to offer some distraction and comic relief to lower the tension. Which is so high scene after scene that no comic relief helps to distend, lol
I’m on Ep 9 & I think that’s some great acting from Li Wantang actor(he was great in The Long River too).…
He is my fav in this drama, every scene in which he appears, I am at the edge of my seat without moving, without breathing or blinking, just not to miss any word or microexpression. Ofc. you've noticed it, too, my friend, there's a connection 👍
Ep 21GPY is selling foreign guns to prince gong?at That time,It's just that easy and legal? they ain't questioning…
They (prince Gong's people) were trying to buy them legaly but the demand was too high and the "preferential lane" to get them was reserved for the imperial guards in the capital (who ordered them first and would be privileged anyways, even if they didn't order them first). That's why they've turned to "private merchants" knowing their origin may have been an illegal importation. This fact actually didn't bother them, prince Gong is a member of the imperial family and may ignore the law if needs smth badly.
His generosity and kind-heartedness really needs to be blessed with lots of good luck, so he will keep surviving…
invoking his good luck isn't fair... 😂 He is too kind-hearted, he is like his mom and his teacher. I don't want his (accumulated) good luck constantly returning to save him, I want his father's genes to wake up in him! He must start to differentiate friends from foes asap. I can understand he had no choice back in Wang's pawnshop in Shanxi, but now he is attracting troubles, he even told prince Gong about his missing father, asking him to investigate, knowing prince Gong "befriended" him only because of Cixi and isn't really friendly...
We see two different rifles in ep 20. The crazy corporal's is probably a Ferguson, Sharps or a rifle using M1867…
Only the first one, but the scene was too dark to descern the details and be 100% sure. People responsible for props in this drama really did a great job in terms of accuracy, we've also seen a beautiful artisan-made handgun of Ms. Sun, very realistic-like. I think this people opted for https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sharps_rifle You see it was in service in China, too, Taiping rebellion included, as well as in the American Civil War (and in western movies, although westerns mainly used Winchesters, M1873, a "model that conquered the West"). As for the second one... it's truly difficult to say, because of its bolt action, the first war which employed this type of rifle was Prussian-Austrian 1866 war, won big by Prussians thanks to their Dreyse bolt rifle, which was more precise for long-distance shots. While the first rifle is ideal for cavalry (one hand is enough to open the barrel and get rid of the used cartridge, lets' remember how cool this was done by John Wayne, lol) and standing or horse-mounting position, bolt action rifles are ideal for entranched infantry shooting in lying position. In mid-19 century, their (experimental) production was limited to European continental countries like Prussia, France, Belgium... so, USA and Russia are ruled out. I think the creators - despite the effort to be as historically realistic as possible - didn't want to deepen the origin of these weapons, the whole "Russian arc" looked more like a funny circus or a spinning carousel aiming to entertain the audience. Even the wrong colour of Russian uniforms (black double breasted uniforms were in use only by the navy), totally unfit for the snowy forest environment (black makes you a perfect target) may have been used just for fun.
I don't like GPY gave the receipe for the Orchid Snow production to the Anhui Tea Association. They will just screw him up, but maybe... he'll learn a thing or two from that experience.
But the ML wouldn't be GPY we know if he haven't had someone like his brother to protect and help him grow up.

Maybe he'll pop up later, when ML's mother push him to marry Yu'er...

The rebellion itself isn't at all, it ended with a tremendous number of casualties (20-30M)
