I wonder what's going on between the emperor and his nanny. Could it be Li Longji had a secret relation with his older maid even in reality? Did he like older chicks? 😁
What do u think abt that sanitation worker? I think that girl, like Wu Zetian, is with him
Ofc she is with him, why would he at first hide the fact he acted as a letter courier revealing this crucial fact only later when he knew "hermit" was already caught? At the time he was asked about her but diverted the topic on the dead drunken man and the phoney female diviner... Aside from the fact he is the only person connected with all the persons who took part in her abduction, he is more or less her age, they may have mutual affection and interest to escape her control freak mother.
Can I still watch this without watching the previous two seasons? Will I be lost if I don't?
you can try, but it will be better to watch the previous seasons in order to understand better the dynamics between the leads, deeper (dynastic) power struggles influencing their lives, authority and general setting of the drama... if you are not aquainted with these things, you'll miss half of our enjoyment
BTW, amazing to me that under 1,000 MDL users are currently watching this. It's absolutely one of the best Cdramas…
yup, we've discussed it yesterday. But maybe, in this case, the less is more - we should look on the positive aspects of such a low MDL's following: there are no haters either, who'd rate 1 the eps which haven't aired yet as it happens with high-hyped dramas. And our small group of "SToTD lovers" can freely exchange our thoughts without being attacked or worn out trying to prove our pov.
Anyone find the grand princess and emperor a pain in the ass in all three seasons
She is there to raise the tension, as well as the emperor's eunuch(s). But if the synopsis is correct and they'll be allowed "to interact with a broader range of common people and their livelihoods and to avoid the power struggle between the Emperor and the Grand Princess.", we won't see much of them
Wu Wenbin, in any other serial, would have gotten a pass and be in 10 more episodes. brutal is better.
Handsome and brutal is even better. Even I, who doesn't particularly care about men's appearence, remember him as a hot stable guy FL's sister married in Prisoner of Beauty. Now, I'll try to add his name to the cast list https://kisskh.at/people/29035-zhou-lu-la
It's a shame, indeed! And truly can't figure out the reasons.
yes, I agree with you. I speak many languages, but although they are mostly Indo-European, I can distinguish and understand many words, morphology and syntax of Turkic languages as well. Mandarin is totally fine to my ear, I can distinguish the words pronounced, hear its total difference from Cantonese and even the accent of certain words in its different dialects, no matter I have no idea what the words mean. I also feel smth "familiar" in Mandarin, eg. the word "Kuài diǎn" sounds so similar to Turkish "hadi", having the same meaning ("move!"), Chá (which is the same in Korean and Japanese "ocha") is çay in Turkish, Persian and Slavic languagues and so on. Yes, from the three languages you've mentioned, if I should pick one for the softness of its sound, I'd pick Mandarin

Tnx for your thoughts... but what you've basically said is that the (international) viewers of both C- and K-drama follow "familiar faces" (I like how you avoided to call them idols, lol), but K-drama audience will "follow" such "faces" even if the plot excludes romance, because the story is shorter and better built up in terms of tension and "hype". I think you're right about it, besides this explanation made me think and check some other C-dramas' viewership like the currently aired Whispers of Fate (or The Sleuth of Ming Dynasty you're watching now), which also has no romance but has a solid tension and hype around the (only) ML. It is actually high for a Mango production drama... their dramas suffer for all kind of flows (a bad translation isn't a negligible issue for non-speakers), it is probably the actor particularly apt for ambiguous roles and has his own followers. Yes, you may be right, Strange Tales of TD, having no romance, no particular tension (with the exception of the princess Taiping, the actress raises tension every time I see her) and actors with no great fandom... But I am so addicted to it, truly love it, lol

" they just refuse to watch something without romance " - yes, you may be right about this, I've just checked some good titles with no romance in it and the viewership is really low. At least it seems to be the case with C-dramas, K-dramas with no romance are still watched. Do you have any idea why?
It's a shame, indeed! And truly can't figure out the reasons.
romance genre can't explain everything. Even your statistics say you mainly watch romance genre (as it is the case of practically every commentator here). But we wouldn't miss this artistic rarity in dramaworld for nothing exactly because it's so different from what the productions usually offer. May be the MDL users are mostly after what they usually watch and refuse to watch smth original?
I fully enjoy how the creator(s) re-employed side characters (and actors playing either the same or different roles) from previous seasons and settings from S1. It is smart not to change the winning team. And this is truly a Return to Chang'an, kind of back-to the origins (and original intentions), to their starting point, to the place they belong, to a home which needs thorough airing and cleaning after their long absence. In the first case, the "cleaning" was subtle (a rebelling general, evil eunuch, complete depowerment of the retired emperor), but the scene of Chengfo Temple's cleaning was a clear metaphor of what they are basically called to do. I'm already thrilled thinking what they gonna do at the Ghost market... Yup, they are back, but on a different level, because now they are seasoned, smarter, stronger and better in team work: as their long absence, traveling and case-solving elsewhere served exactly this purpose. This season may surpass even the previous one!
This is exactly what I was missing in season 2. Season 2 was still good, but the political intrigue between the…
Right, I've also missed it in S2, local politics can't compete with Chang'an sophisticated deadly lush... With LLF setting up a highly profiled secret agency will certainly add to the sophistication of the core contention between the emperor and his aunt.
I like the leads; however, they seem to have forgotten to speed up the action scenes once they filmed the fighting…
I think I've seen all of them as supporting roles in better edited stuff and was even less impressed. Action scenes here are truly laughable, yes, it looks like they've forgotten to speed up the scenes. 😁🤦♀️ Yet, it is still watchable if you're in a train or in a hospital or somewhere you want to pass your time quickly and switch off your brain, it doesn't irritate, lol
It looks like I'm the only one who watched this minidrama. Low budget, not particularly attractive leads, somewhat silly FL, slow fights and quite predictable investigation plot... probably dissuaded other viewers, so I'll outline only pros: 1. it is short and can be additionaly shortened if viewed at 1,5 speed, the quality remains more or less the same and you won't feel you are waisting your time because it doesn't last long 2. it's basically an investigation story meant just for the entertainment when you are particularly idle, with funny competition between two male leads who are investigating both the current murders and an old case. The competition "who is better" includes the FL ofc. For how childish it is, it doesn't offend viewer's intelligence either 3. there's an interesting twist at the very end, a sort of candy prize for the audience watching this crap for about 2 hours. Overall, 7/10 😁
