The Sweetest Love
Cute, shy guy is obsessed with protecting female lead for 25 years after she protected him as a child. What’s not to love? When the hero talks about protecting the female lead, this is what I’m talking about! THIS is protection. One of the sweetest love stories I’ve ever seen. But wait.. what about the fact that the female lead is Yukimura’s boss? No rules against dating your direct report???! Sekkuhara anyone?! (In J drama love, who cares right? Lol)
I like to think of these type of obsessive love stories, where the man has been watching over the woman for a long time as not, literally a romance between man and woman, but the Spirit watching over me with such a pure and protective love. I don’t see such a love exists between men and women in this world, but it does exist spiritually, that protective pure love. And these J dramas are like an alternate universe that show that.
Parts of it reminds me of the J drama My Neighbor of Healing has a Secret where the stalker is an extremely handsome JPop star faced gentlemen, who only wants to protect the female lead. Another part reminds me of Groundhog Day, where the male lead knows a little bit too much about the female lead through a kind of stalking and meticulous gathering of information over time. The only difference is that Hokuto Matsumura who plays the male lead is so pure hearted, charming, handsome, and sweet that he doesn’t come across as stalkerish or creepy at all. He’s just adorable. In fact the entire show is carried by his Jpop star style charm and aura alone, not exactly the female lead whose energy is leans more closed off, aloof, and emotionally distant. I think she also appears that way because the story is told more from Yukimura’s point of view so her real feels and inner thoughts are hidden to the viewer. But it’s sweet that he sees past her hard shell to who she really is. Not to mention he has a (better looking version of) David Bowie look alike as a loyal best friend who wants to protect and care for Yukimura.
The songs and background music is top notch. It’s a major advantage for this series because surely there a tons of j dramas with similar themes, but when it’s drenched in the most addictive and melodious music, it makes it an unforgettable experience that I will always treasure. It’s like the sweetest Jpop that I need right now. The song My Only by SixTones is soooo sweet and addictive and really touches the heart. The theme music I love from the soundtrack is called Kikeninshiwa Yurusenai. Another theme music with the violin takes me back to Sailor Moon S vibes. The music in this drama has all the FEELS and I love that.
Whenever that song My Only plays, I get butterflies as if I’m falling in love and melting each time. When Mariko San hugged Yukimura for the first time after they went on the Ferris wheel together in episode 5, my eyes welled up with tears. Not only does Yukimura save and protect her, but in episode 8 Mariko San saves him in a big way too just like she did in their first encounter when they were kids.
I was so involved with the magic of the love affair that I forgot to pay attention to the bad guys. They almost felt like filler. Some bad guy who’s always eating corn dogs, bad guy laughter with monster lighting, Mariko San’s stepmother and her shenanigans, some other dudes tied up, kidnappings, murders, and whatever. Hopefully it all gets resolved, as long as it doesn’t obscure my view of Yukimura and his love for Mariko San. And I just love the way Yukimura talks like a badass to Mariko’s evil stepmother and to the police detective - the way he talks back as the protector is so cool. It’s like a different side to him. And the way he protects her from all sorts of harm that she’s not even aware of. For 25 years… the villainy has been going on for a long time, and so has the protection and love. It’s like the battle between good and evil as old as time.
Yukimura’s reaction after the first kiss at the start of episode 9 was sooooo cute and adorable. He’s like “Yume?” (Was it a dream?) ahhh he’s like a little marshmallow.. I mean he’s the most harmless stalker lover one could ever have. Like if a fluffy marshmallow or the cute pillsbury doughboy stalked you just to protect your life from harm, would you be offended? But he’s not just flat and devoid of personality- Yukimura definitely has a sassy personality instead of being totally bland and a follower. Even if he protects and follows her, he is definitely his own person with so many different sides to him.
Omg I just discovered that the actor Hokuto Matsumura who plays the male lead is actually a jpop star vocalist from SixTONES. It makes so much sense because there’s something in his vibe that reminds me of the Kpop and Jpop stars. He has that quality that makes you want to melt. His acting is exceptional and he carries the entire show. And the SixTONES song that keeps playing seems like it was sung by him, it fits him so well. Ahhhhh I’m in love. This song My Only will keep me company for the next month. ❤️
