If they accept this arrangement, others, including their fans, should not interfere.
If the storyline involves both the male lead and female lead equally, regardless of seniority, they should receive equal billing positions.
This approach would be fair because the main focus of the story, who carries the drama, would receive the first billing position and accordingly be compensated.

They might spread blame towards the weaker of the team, resulting in a team that achieves nothing. The success of a drama depends on many factors. Even if the drama is good, if it doesn't match the taste of the majority of the audiences, the viewership may be low, discouraging producers from creating diverse dramas out of fear of low viewership.
Just one flop drama from an actor can cost them their job, and it doesn't guarantee that a good drama will always be successful.
As I've only been following Chinese entertainment for a while, the culture of blame is taken very seriously in this society.
