We could say XM is a villain for half of the drama. He did things out of control, later revealed why he did those and gave him redemption arc.
For 2nd tribulation, it's like the King was scared of the constant power rising of Lu Family (first with LCK's father and then LCK), thought Lu family might commit treason. LCK's father already knew it and carefully attempted his son to stay out of spotlight and future trouble.

They remember their tribulation lives when they arrive back to the heavenly realm. The only life they can't remember was what happened at 30,000 years ago.
According to the timeline, you could count 30,000 years-ago life as 1st life and the current timeline (at the heavenly realm) as 2nd life.
Then, the actual tribulations are counting. (1st tribulation, 3rd life could be animal one at ep 1).
