A Nail Biting Dark Crime Thriller
This is my first Taiwanese drama. By chance, I discovered it and became a fan of Wu Kang Ren. The thrill element is maintained until the end. Though the series is a bit dark and gory, the pacing is just right to keep it from being overwhelming or boring. The actors have done a very nice job of keeping me engaged. The villain is actually smart and not just in the name but in action as well. Though it is not a drama that can be repeated many times, it was a very thrilling one-time watch.Was this review helpful to you?
A Hou Ming Hao Show All The Way
Positive Points1. ML and FL's acting was good. Hou Ming Hao absolutely nailed his role. FL, though, was miscast; she performed her role well.
2. The action scenes were good, and the overall screenplay and direction were also good. The comic timing was good and felt natural.
3. Except for the childish FL's character and her weak A'mao and his meek sister, I liked how the female characters in this drama were written. All of them had their own purpose and goals in life.
Negative Points
1. FL's character is absolutely childish and silly. No one can take her seriously. She feels more like a comic relief instead of being an independent character. She plans to run off to her lover by boarding a boat alone, along with trunks filled with gold, while she does not know proper self-defense except for some petty tricks. She does things on impulse and needs the ML to come to her rescue. As soon as the ML comes to her rescue, she gives the ML her 2 cents on how she understood the schemes, but still is willing to get herself caught in it, but did not plan how to get out of it. Moreover, her character was inconsistent. She was so attached to her maid but didnot gave much reaction when she got killed. Her father gave her such a shock, but she turned absolutely normal within a few hours. Should she not be a little bit upset at least? Also, how old is she exactly, as she was saying she built her reputation of being miraculus weapon creator for the past 16 years. Was it a sloppily written dialogue or a wrong translation? The FL all day thinks about the trinklets she made and her A'mao. No idea about the political situation and politics, but loves to insert herself into it in the name of rescue. No sense of self-protection, as how in real she went to the peace negotiation team without telling anyone. If anything had happened to her, what would she have done then? Later, I thought when she would get a bit older she will not do such foolish things and she failed to prove me right. At the last episode, she herself comes to the enemy territory in the name of love, but only manages to be used as leverage against her husband. Wasn't she given a deadly poison to keep her husband in check? How come nothing happened to her? All in all it was an absolutely poorly written FL. The ML liking her itself was a wonder to me.
2. The political scheming seems a bit weak. The initial palace coup ends just like that? Why would Empress Cui want the only military commander (ML) to die, as this will lead to a border invasion by the enemy troops? How did the mutiny get resolved that easily? None of the antagonists hardly feels like antagonists except for the Empress Cui. That Li Mao was not an antagonist at all. I don't know what the writer was trying to portray by trying to redeem everyone towards the end. I understand it was partially to portray complex human nature but it reduced the impact of the ending for me. I was just watching Xiao Wu Yi scheming and making big plans while rest of the characters were watching. I prefer a proper, equally powerful antagonist who can match the level of the protagonist.
3. The relationship between the leads does not make any sense. Its typical cliche romance with a misunderstood heartless ML and a bubbly love-brained kind FL. Moreover, it does not help that both actors have 0 chemistry and give off a more sibling vibe. Aimi is good in her acting, but she is absolutely miscast with Hou Ming Hao. None of them communicates with each other at all. None of them tells the other what they are planning. Moreover, it was a serious turn-off for me seeing a minor actress with an adult actor who is a decade older than her. Aimi should do roles suitable for her age, along with actors who are closer to her age. Heavy makeup was not enough to hide how young she is compared to the ML. She will get her turn in the future. Impatience is never a good trait.
Overall, if you are a fan of Hou Ming Hao, you can watch it as he gave a stunning performance but story-wise it was nothing special (certainly not bad but not that excellent either) and I certainly hope Aimi will take the hint and stay away from romance drama for now (especially with actors a decade older than her).

From Ashes Back To Trashes
Negative Points1. No proper written character for the ML & the FL. The story is shot solely from the perspective of the FL. But the transitions are too fast for me to even connect with her. ML so far feels like the loyal hound of the FL who only barks if the FL permits it (No offence to the actors, honestly, but I am absolutely seething due to this stupid writing). There is nothing that can evoke an emotional connection with any of the leads. I absolutely love female-centric revenge dramas. However, in this drama, the FL is an absolute moron, honestly. She is weak, useless, and hardly has any brain. Sorry to say, but as much as I like Chen Duling, turning and giving creepy looks is not enough to convince me that she is smart enough to outsmart her enemies if she keeps getting into trouble and fails to come out of it by herself. She mostly falls into her own traps and just cries like a child. This is absolutely ridiculous. There is a lack of depth in political conspiracy, especially when the move comes from the FL, which is all superficial and nothing has any depth. If it were a properly written drama and she were not the FL, then she would never have succeeded against those scheming antagonists. I don’t know why they have left out the brain of the FL outside the drama while making the antagonists keep their wits. Was it a deliberate move to make the FL look foolish in front of the viewers? If you don’t want to follow the novel, I don’t mind at all as long as it has been written well. What I hate most is to mislead the viewers by promoting the FL as a strong, ruthless one, but then reducing the FL to being the total opposite of what was promised. Why make her strong in the name only, but fail to present her on screen like that? If you can’t brainstorm on how to present her as a strong, independent, intelligent person, then you should have hired a better screenwriter. This is completely unacceptable. While I understand she is a human being and can’t possibly outsmart so many damn smart villains all the time, she should not also be like a complete idiot. Moreover, to show the FL smart and independent, you don’t need to present the ML as a guard dog. There does not need to be much screen time as long as the characters have enough depth, and you have a good actor to play it out. Both the leads are total victims of this drunk on short drama style writing, horrendous voice dubbing, and 4x speed direction with an overdose of red filters.
2. The acting is absolutely weak from both leads. While Zhou Yiran was still somewhat passable in emotional scenes, Chen Duling was absolutely poor. I could hardly feel her emotions. She is normally good at giving cold murduerous looks. But I don’t know what happened, but her acting was not good at all. She was so good in the Glory and I was so eager to watch the actress-director duo from the Glory but was utterly disappointed. The production team did Zhou Yi Ran dirty again as though he is the ML, but he seems to exist only to keep this dumb FL alive to give creepy looks in fancy costumes. The production team did the most dirty to Chen Duling, honestly. How come her character is reduced to being a damsel in distress despite it being a female-centric drama? Did she achieve anything post her rebirth? Actors can’t really perform brilliantly with a half baked utter stupid script. The screenwriter and producer are the key people who need to take the blame for his half-written garbage. Complete waste of an actor like Zhou Yiran. Except for a few emotional scenes, he looked flat to me. Chen Duling was probably struggling with how to present this poorly written garbage kind of bad FL’s Character. The screenwriters should probably think about changing their profession.
3. The direction and screenplay felt absolutely sloppy. Does the director have a flight to catch? If not, why is everything moving so damn fast that the entire story feels like a compilation of flashbacks? All of the action scenes look like they just started and ended in 10x. No catchy or gorgeous moves. No proper battle or even fight sequence. Looks like everyone is in a hurry. Why is during the battle, despite a veteran military general (who works under her father) being present, she, who has no idea about military battle tactics, is leading the battle? She does not know any self-defence at episode 01. But suddenly knows archery at the ambush at the bandits' lair, knows battle tactics, and now suddenly knows swordplay. What is this rubbish? At least write consistently. Are they so short of budget that they can’t even arrange for battle armor for the ML and the FL? The FL goes to the battlefield to face the enemy general in her Grand Princess makeup and attarir and jewellery to give a poorly written speech of patriotism or whatever it was. Then suddenly comes out of nowhere to reinforce the ML and gets trapped along with him to create an opening for the FL’s mother, who suddenly came and baam sacrificed herself to force poorly acted melodrama in the middle of the battlefield. Can this FL do anything other than crying and giving big melodramatic speeches? I am tired of watching her do foolish things. Who wrote this rubbish? I will avoid this screenwriter’s further work.
4. No chemistry between the leads. Their romance story feels shallow and based on life-saving graces. The actors have absolutely zero chemistry. In many scenes, Chen Duling felt awkward to me. The romantic scenes between the leads start out of nowhere, looking misplaced and unnatural. Even their misunderstanding felt so rushed and out of place. Didn’t you trust him the most, and now you won’t even listen properly. Also, why is the ML not explaining properly? For example, the ML got stabbed and is on bed rest, and in the next scene, he is making pastries with the FL in the kitchen while romancing with her hair.
5. There are too many inconsistencies with the story. Why would she scream and alert her enemy if she is so intelligent? The first thing she does after getting a 2nd chance is head straight to the main villain and threaten to kill him for the murder of her father. She is taking the prince back to the palace, which is the most dangerous place during a palace coup. Is she that idiot? She talks a traitor out of committing treason with a few lines. It was a palace coup, but the main villain comes with this little soldier. Is the production house struggling so much that they can’t afford enough extra to make it convincing enough? How come the secret army soldiers are dropping suddenly from above as soon as the signal is sent? How come with this little army, she can stop a palace coup with this many rebel soldiers without any planning, whereas the enemy is too prepared? How is this even believable that she, with this little sloppy planning, managed to stop a man who planned to seize that throne for 2 decades? Would not a man like that have a contingency plan? It’s laughable. During a palace coup, how come the soldiers are falling dead left and right without putting up any fight? It feels like a video game instead of a drama. I would find better thrills in a video game, I guess. The inconsistencies are too much for me to even recite. I might have to write the entire script of the drama.
6. Not only this drama, but many other dramas this year have mocked the viewers with a completely different story in the drama after promising/ misleading it about it being an adaptation of the novel. If it irritates you to write an intelligent, strong, sharp FL along with a proper character for the ML in a female-centric drama, then why pretend to adapt such a novel and destroy it? Just write an original script with whatever you like. Also, in the name of screen space, why did you write such a shallow ML character? Instead, write a proper ML who can shine whatever screentime he gets and adds something of his own to the overall story instead of existing just to serve the purpose of the FL.
Positive Points
1. The only positive thing about this drama is the OST album. It is catchy and melodic, but still NOWHERE NEAR enough to save this sinking ship.
Overall, this is an absolutely shitty drama with nonsense half-developed twists filled with plotholes, which is coupled with poor acting from the leads who have absolutely zero chemistry.

Should Be Called The Grand Saga of Cheng Shao Shang's Stupidity feat Palace Version
It is even a miracle that I managed to endure and finish this elaborate grand shitshow. The story pacing is too slow. Why were 56 episodes in total required for such a basic drama with this low-caliber storyline? The excellent cinematography was the only saving grace. There was no proper character progression and growth for any of the characters. The romance was not that good either. There was no proper communication between the couple, and both acted independently. Why was such an elaborate separation phase even required if the FL eventually forgave the ML for his mistakes?Key Features of Dumb Yet Proud of Her Dumbness Type FL Called Cheng Shao Shang
1. The most infuriating character here is the FL. I have hardly seen such FL who is so proud of her uselessness (somewhat narcissistic even). There was no change in her character throughout. Moreover, so many episodes got wasted but there was not even a single scene of the wedding ceremony. Part 2 is all about the dumb FL spreading her foolishness in the palace. She is hardly 15 and does not know many things as she claims, but will not agree that she can be wrong sometimes. She even dares to give her self righterious speech to the royal family. If she were not the FL, she would have cost the heads of her entire family because of her reckless manner of speaking.
2. Writers are expecting me to believe this fool has any characteristics that the princesses of the palace would be jealous of. It is odd that they are behaving like street women and bullying the FL just because this foolish FL looks smart, cute, and miserable to the viewers. She jumps into palace politics just because she is there, despite the warning from her fiancé. She has to give her self righterious 2 cents here also.
3. Takes everything for face value. Just because someone spoke nicely to her, she goes all out to help them without thinking about anything. This is not being smart and caring, but rather idiotic, as she will implicate her entire family and her fiancé.
This girl is too straightforward for my liking. Straightforwardness is good, but to a certain extent. If you exceed it you will be called disrespectful and arrogant in my opinion. This FL lacks manner to speak with anybody. I am not telling her to listen all the bogus comments but rushing headfirst to fight like a bull every time you don't like someone is plain stupidity.
4. The audacity of the FL to forge a fake tiger seal that could cause catastrophe in the battle just because she likes the empress and wants to save the crown prince on behalf of her mother, despite the warning from her fiancé. She needs to be slapped day and night by her mother so that she develops some brain. She grew even more foolish after staying with the overlenient empress. She clearly needed a real-life disaster that would harm her for real, so that she finally thinks before doing anything. A little knowledge is indeed a dangerous thing.
5. This fool, out of her love for the empress and the injustice of the world, has now turned murder investigator, somehow. Interfere in other people's matters with the bare minimum knowledge. Came to the crime scene and gave the 2ML big speeches about her own relationship and praised how excellent lady she herself is. Then looks for things by locking the door so that she can get kidnapped, and ML can come to her rescue. Now she is boasting about who would have solved the case if not her, as if no one in the world could have found out that hidden room.
6. Oh, she also loves to have an engagement once in a while just to spite her mother. Donated the first one in the name of doing service for the country. Hated the 2nd one for saving her and her entire family's lives. Though I understand her somewhat, I hated her actions after the breakup. Instead of focusing on her career, as she bragged earlier, she went to become the caretaker of the ex-empress. Gave the 3rd one some hope after years and got engaged with him, but broke it again after she saw the 2nd one, whom she could not forget. Then rants all about how ill-fated she is.
7. Knows nothing about swords and any self-defence tactics, but like an idiot, she went to stand in front to pose with a sword in the name of military defence. If she were not the FL, she would have died 10 times over already due to her stupidity.
She is extremely arrogant and rude, who loves to run her big mouth in front of all. As if none of the problems would ever be solved without her 2cents about justice and bla bla bla, despite not having enough knowledge about the matter. If all the young female characters were not written deliberately as jealous, brainless, blindly bullying the FL due to their obsession with the ML, then this stupid FL would have been absolutely hated by viewers.
8. She loves to blame the ML for losing her identity as Cheng Shaoshang. But honestly, did she have any self-made identity ever? Did she make any effort to make one ever? Does she even have the capability to make one? She won't listen to her fiancé, mother, or father or anyone, as she is always right, and she even claims that she is not the one to follow her husband blindly. Does this fool have enough brain to do things properly except for that self-righteous, arrogant attitude of hers? The writer is the main culprit here for writing such a dumb yet narcissistic FL.
Overall, if you like such a FL you can give it a try. I absolutely loathe this type of adult baby type FL who won't ever accept her mistake, nor will she put any effort to improve herself, and will do dumb things that can bring serious problems for other but then will rebel if she is spoken harshly. A FL who self-praises all day without contributing much for real (due to her dumbness), is not really my cup of tea. I absolutely hope to forget this horror show.

Look Sparkly But Lacks Proper Substance
Positive Points1. The cinematography, direction, color grading and editing were top-notch. A big thanks to the screenwriter for not misleading the viewers, as quite a few dramas did in the name of drama adaptation this year. The screenwriter changed quite a few things, but the main essence of the story was not destroyed. Though I have quite a few complaints with a few things, this adaptation can truly be called the drama adaptation of the original novel.
2. The cast was good, and quite a few known faces were there. Though I was not quite satisfied with Meng Zi Yi's acting, the rest of the cast did well. He Yu was the perfect guy to play the pretending-to-be-sickly, harmless, flirty, but actually scheming and manipulating everything from behind-the-scenes type crown prince. I can not name all, but quite a few of the supporting cast have got my attention, especially the actress playing Bu Shu Lin. She is the only woman I believed was a man.
3. The pacing of the story was good, and though it felt a bit dragged towards the middle, it ended well.
Negative Points
1. ML has been toned down a lot, and he is mostly shown as a love-brained, which is ridiculous. In a female-centric drama, what is this obsession with the screenwriter to show the ML as an incompetent, love-brained guy? Why can he not be sane as well just because he fell in love? I am not asking the writer to give too much focus on the ML, but at least give something to the viewers so that the ML to look incompetent. That chasing track of Bu Shulin was such a nice well-written track that gave everyone a spot to shine, but it was toned down a lot. Bu Shulin, Crown Prince, and the King and all other princes were all given their own stage. But the screenwriter had to make everything about the FL. Xiao Huayong is a complex character. He is not a love-obsessed guy at all. He loves the FL and yet did not lose his ruthlessness, and neither his vision as the future emperor. He knows where to control and where to use his soft-heartedness. It was such an elaborately written track but the drama toned down both Bu Shulin's capability, Xiao Huayong's testing Bu Shulin's capability, and saving her from the emperor and Shen Xihe's growing softness and the ML's mixed feelings about it. He was drawn to Shen Xihe's character but he neither turned soft-hearted nor did he lose his senses in love. Such a good thing was downplayed and ruined his character for me. ML being portrayed as a capable leader but hardly doing anything all the time and acting as a drama queen is quite inconsistent. As much as I loved his drama-queen sickly prince acting it would have been amazing to see him scheming too. The lack of it has totally affected his character for me.
2. That dividing the bed with the bell also did not make sense, considering Shen Xihe's character. She is decisive and emotionless right from the start. Once she makes a decision, she does not get back from her decision, nor does she make the other party (ML) incur a loss. She believes in trade, and it was normal to want a child that will help her secure her position as the mother of the future king, as her husband won't live long. So this useless bell thing does not make any sense to be honest. It just dragged the plot for me. Her being in love with her husband had to happen naturally. But going all the ways and dragging it out feels rather forced to me. There was no chemistry between the actors. That spark was missing in their love story, and I failed to connect to their story. Rather, I felt the 2nd ML & 2nd FL had better chemistry.
3. There is not much political scheming in this drama. I thought it would be a drama about succession struggle, and I was highly disappointed. The joint scheming between the ML & FL was completely left out in the drama, and their relationship felt quite boring to me. Their joint scheming was something I was looking forward in the drama. But all I got to see was the ML suddenly devoting his life for the FL and spending all the time in wooing her and the FL playing all hard to get. She did not feel like a character who was cold-hearted and was maintaining rationality for her well-being due to the representation of her character in the drama. What was the FL doing in the middle of a battlefield without battle gear and just came to shoot a single arrow. How ridiculous. I know it was to create a romantic atmosphere, but it didnot make any sense to me.
4. Meng Zi Yi is decent only in serious scenes but her expressions are very limited in other scenes. Especially since she has started to warm up to her husband, her expression was not up to par and sometimes even felt a bit cringy. Lately, all of her roles seem similar and in many of her future dramas she is likely playing a similar role. She at least needs to learn how to perfect acting for such roles since she is playing similar roles for quite some time.
5. Left too many things unexplained. Instead of the leads' joint scheming and cooperation, most of the time was spent on the ML wooing the FL. Why no mention of how the ML faked his death and how he reacted knowing the biggest truth of his life about who poisoned him?
Overall, if you do not like political scheming but rather cheesy romance, then you might like it. Otherwise, you would be disappointed like me.

Not A Popular Opinion
This drama started with a bang. The first episode was intriguing and mysterious. But the pacing got quite slow for my liking. The preparation and the elimination of the first enemy took too long for my liking. I dropped the drama twice in between. The acting and cinematography were nice, but the pacing was too slow. There were some thrilling moments in between, but overall, there was not enough balance for my liking. As for the story, the writing was not that good. The revelation of the 3rd enemy was hinted at right from the start, because of the mask. I did not find the main surprise element that surprising at all, unfortunately. Also, the finale did not feel satisfying to me at all. There was not enough tension, and the 3rd enemy got his karma too easily, in my opinion. Moreover, though I understand it was not a romance drama, I unfortunately did not find any chemistry between the ML & FL. The FL was brilliant in the initial episode, but I absolutely did not like how her character later turned out. Though I understand it was a male-centric drama, the character of the FL could have been handled better. The action scenes were nicely choreographed. Overall, the drama was a decent watch. How Is This Collection of Flashbacks Are Considered As The Special Episodes
These two special episodes are nothing but old flashback scenes with the voiceover by the ML. I thought that this was the wedding/ life of the leads after the ML came back. But it was none of this. As a viewer, I felt cheated. Though Its better to get something rather than nothing, but is still not a sufficient excuse to post Flashbacks as special episodes. Bai Lu Is The Star of The Drama
This is the first Republican drama that I have watched. I absolutely loved it. Xu Kai seemed to be born to play the role of Gu Yanzhen. The casting was amazing. I loved the personality of the 2ML more. I felt his character was more stable for the FL. Sorry, I loved the FL with the 2ML more. The cinematography was really nice. Bai Lu gave it her all. A Psychological Thriller Done Right
Usually, crime thrillers don't have much rewatch value. Beyond Evil stands apart from the crowd due to its phenomenal screenplay. The two police officers and their cat-and-mouse game with each other is the heart of this show. What I loved about the show is that instead of focusing on the severity of the crimes that many crime dramas focused on serial killing do, the creatives of Beyond Evil focused more on the psychological impact of such crimes on the families of the victims. Though the pacing was a bit slow until episode 6, from then on it was a rollercoaster. The serial killer was exposed on episode 6, but Beyond Evil has managed to keep me totally hooked until the last episode. Exposing the serial killer this early was a masterstroke by the creatives. The entire cast, along with the direction, music, and screenplay, was done just right. I absolutely loved the drama.Was this review helpful to you?
The Greatest Evil Spirit Is The Human Heart
The visuals were absolutely gorgeous. The entire production team has done a great job in creating those creepy-looking sets. The CGI was top-notch. The direction was fabulous, and the use of different colors was a brilliant idea. The choreography of the action scenes deserves a special mention. The story was not that special, honestly, but the execution was great. The entire team has done a great job. The cast, especially Nam Joo Hyuk was phenomenal. He looked absolutely lethal as the spirit slayer. The entire cast has done a great job. I was confused about who killed whom and who was the biggest villain here. That Queen Dowager and the king had thoroughly confused me. Overall, if you are not a horror lover, you might not like it. But for horror lovers, it could be a great one-time watch. I absolutely loved this drama.PS. That little always hungry gwimae "Kkeomeoksari" was such a cutie.
