Yes, this was shown in Episode 1. The big question/mystery is what happened because FL clearly had no idea who ML was when she met him at the solar panel plant.

It has not been explicitly said what happened to him. ML’s mom mentioned in Ep. 18 that he was sent overseas to a tough location and was supposed to come back a year later. But after three years there he passed away. Even if there’s no foul play involved in causing his death, there was foul play involved in ML’s uncles framing ML’s dad for a crime and forcing his exile. So that’s why ML’s mom is estranged from her family.

Not only is it based on a Gu Man novel (like You Are My Glory and Love O2O), Gu Man is one of the screenwriters. The second screenwriter worked with Gu Man on Love O2O drama & movie and also was a screenwriter on The Best Thing!

(1) The girl is walking around implying / trying to give an impression that she’s a daughter of FL’s dad. In reality, though, she’s not his illegitimate daughter. But she’s trying to give that impression to make herself more important (basically, being an illegitimate daughter of a rich man’s true love).
(2) There was one society event two years ago when dad took both FL and fake-daughter to (because fake daughter begged him). But after that FL put her foot down and made sure dad doesn’t take fake daughter to any events.
