The novel focuses more on palace intrigue, fighting for the throne, and wars over territory. The most romantic thing.. is probably their loyalty and possessiveness towards each other.

I am quite used to reading long Chinese novels that are thousands of chapters long, telling history and palace intrigue so I quite enjoyed it. Maybe those who are not used to it will get bored and can't stand it.

And judging from the demo video, the plot is still one framework but it is very different so I guess not reading the novel is fine. But if you still want to read it, it's also fine because many fans of the novel like it including me
