Title Shadow Love
The new trailer has me a little worried. I don’t want a light or exaggerated romantic comedy. I’m here for tension, suspense, hatred, love, their rivalry and confrontations, intense fight scenes, seeing them collaborate, and experiencing provocative romantic moments. What we need are emotionally powerful scenes, a mature setting, and a logical, solid plot. I want to see female generals in roles and storylines that combine serious stakes, tension, and romance.

Same, I thought I was the only one who couldn’t get into LOTFG. Hopefully this drama is good it looks promising.
I also didn't like LOTFG, although I tried to watch it because of Cheng Lei, but I ended up giving up. I have so much hope for this one because I also really like Song Yi's acting. I hope the storyline will be there.

What good news perhaps there is hope for the future adaptation of (THE REBIRTH OF THE MALICIOUS EMPRESS OF MILITARY…
It's the same author but the writing in THE REBIRTH OF THE MALICIOUS EMPRESS OF MILITARY LINEAGE is simply several notches above. You should try reading it, it's amazing.

Let's pray that the adaptation lives up to this masterpiece 🙏🙏🙏. I've read it four times and I plan to reread it again, I'm so afraid that this magnificent novel will be ruined.

im sorry but why is this giving ai lmfao
I wrote a text much lower down, in the same style, but absolutely not structured. You can see that I still have this writing style. Someone suggested I improve my texts and paragraph them, because they are quite relevant but difficult to read so I do my best. But I'm sure that doesn't interest you, do you? You yourself know why you persist in wanting to prove that it's AI, think what you want, you have this freedom💁‍♀️. On that there is no point in adding more.

Thank you, I'll start it, the reviews seem very positive.

When I watch, I pay close attention and analyze more deeply, because if you don't explain the reasons why you don't like a drama, you will simply be treated as a hater. Now I am being called an AI just because I give my simple personal analysis. 😮‍💨

On Legend of the Female General Aug 15, 2025
Legend of the Female General began with a powerful promise: a heroine forged in war, raised as a man, forced to hide her identity to survive and lead troops. On paper, everything suggested an intense historical epic, blending military strategy, dramatic tension, and subtle romance. In practice, the result is a disjointed story where narrative coherence is sacrificed in favor of light comedy and recycled romantic clichés.

An Incoherent Heroine

He Yan is supposed to have spent her entire life concealing her gender and maintaining a strict masculine façade, yet suddenly adopts behaviors completely incompatible with her past: awkward teasing, obvious feminine mannerisms, and a total lack of caution in her interactions. A character shaped by discipline and solitude would not transform overnight into a bubbly, reckless figure without any transition phase. This break in logic shatters immersion and strips the character of credibility.

By Episode 3, she openly jokes with soldiers, displaying clearly feminine gestures and tone, without fearing exposure.

In Episode 6, during an active military mission, she takes the time to tease Xiao Jue about personal details, breaking the discipline expected from an officer of her rank.

No scene offers a believable psychological progression from the cold soldier to this carefree version. The change is abrupt and feels like a rewrite to fit a more comedic tone.

Unbalanced Pacing

The narrative structure awkwardly alternates between serious moments and forced comedic sequences, destroying any dramatic tension. Military intrigue, which should be central, is pushed into the background, interrupted by comedy scenes that seem to belong to an entirely different drama. The story moves forward in fits and starts, leaving subplots unfinished or rushed, while episodes fill dead time to artificially extend the romance.

In Episode 8, during a key plotline about the strategic defense of a city, the action is interrupted by a long dinner scene filled with romantic gags.

In Episode 12, an important lead about an infiltrated spy is wrapped up in under five minutes, replaced by an unrelated lovers’ quarrel.

These constant breaks cause the audience to lose the thread, reducing the military stakes to little more than decorative background.

An Overbearing Romance

Instead of balancing the heroine’s rise, political stakes, and romance, the story leans heavily into a dynamic where the male lead becomes the recurring savior. This choice reduces He Yan’s emancipation arc to a simple excuse for a standardized romance. As a result, strategy, politics, and character psychology are all pushed aside.

In Episode 15, during an ambush, He Yan has a chance to prove her strategic skills… but Xiao Jue steps in to resolve everything, relegating her to the role of spectator.

In Episode 20, a battle is interrupted by a lighthearted scene where Xiao Jue tends to a minor wound on He Yan, completely shifting focus away from the war’s stakes.

A Poorly Managed Secret Identity

The concealment of He Yan’s female identity is handled carelessly: unconvincing costumes, overly refined gestures, and no real tension around the risk of discovery. The viewer is expected to believe that those around her notice nothing, even though everything—from her voice to her posture—gives her away.

In Episode 5, she appears in light feminine clothing in her quarters, and a soldier walks in by mistake… yet the scene is played for laughs, with no consequences.

In Episode 9, at a banquet, she laughs loudly and adopts a feminine posture in front of characters who are supposedly unaware of her secret.

These moments eliminate any dramatic tension surrounding her disguise and render this plot device almost pointless.

my conclusion

Legend of the Female General had all the ingredients to become a standout work in the historical wuxia genre: a strong female lead, a rich military backdrop, and romance as a subtle undercurrent. But the disjointed storyline, glaring inconsistencies in the heroine’s writing, the overwhelming dominance of romance over action, and the careless handling of the secret identity turn this potential into a frustrating watch.

It is not a total failure thanks to the strong chemistry between the two main actors, but it is far—very far—from the grand strategic epic that was promised. In the end, it feels more like a light romantic drama in historical costume, coated with a thin martial veneer that fails to convince.

For anyone looking for more than a romantic comedy, this drama is not for you. For anyone accustomed to thoughtful and logical storytelling, this is not for you either. This is only my opinion and my own analysis so far.

I am in need of good, convincing recommendations featuring a strong female lead and an intelligent plot — even something like Are You the One would do.

Just because the production team chose Zhu Ye doesn't necessarily mean that if we don't feel satisfied with her…
Thanks for the advice, I'm in a hurry so I don't necessarily pay attention to detail. Personally, I'll keep watching because the actors have great chemistry despite my dissatisfaction. The drama has some positive points, but I'm just not entirely convinced.

So many complaints on here about Zhou Ye or He Yan not being masculine or general enough? Haha, maybe that's WHO…
Just because the production team chose Zhu Ye doesn't necessarily mean that if we don't feel satisfied with her character, we should just turn a blind eye because it's the production's choice. Producers have their own standards for choosing actors or actresses that suit them, but that doesn't take away the audience's right to also have their own standards for deciding whether the actress is suitable for the role or not.

If you ask the question "Why is our description or imagination of what a general should be right?", I could also retort with "Why is the producers' vision of He Yan's character also right?"

In general, drama and movies are mainly aimed at the audience; entertainment is there to make us feel that even in fiction, what is not necessarily possible makes sense and seems credible. Unlike K-drama, the Chinese are really into visuals and physical aesthetics. They are not really willing to show a woman who lives in a historical context being tanned from being exposed to the sun, too dirty, or even really disheveled and without makeup.

This is due to the fact that the public accepts this type of standard in China: whatever the conditions, the actors must always be shown in their best light to satisfy the public eager for visuals. All this, the majority of people who have watched C-drama for a long time know. But compared to other dramas, despite the impeccable visuals, we can still find realistic elements that can convince us that certain things are credible.

I read the novel and I was dissatisfied because of the inconsistencies, but let's talk about the drama. A woman raised as a man, formatted since childhood to be a man, completely manipulated and indoctrinated to be a serious man who leads an army, and who had no trusted soldiers at her side — used to being solitary to hide her secret — can simply never be so teasing and comfortable with such blatant feminine ways with others.

This type of person must completely relearn to detach herself from her identity as a man, but this is not the case here. It is not logical. Many things are wrong in this adaptation, and the romance was also pushed too fast.

You can't come and tell people not to feel disappointed that the drama doesn't live up to their expectations just because you can accept and ignore all the insane things shown — because that will never be the case for everyone.

We're not even talking about the actors' performances; we're talking about the director's interpretation of He Yan not being satisfactory, especially knowing that there are so many other actresses who, despite their femininity, managed to do justice to the role of a soldier with a masculine aura.

You have your own opinion, and you also have to let others have theirs without attacking them or being sarcastic. This drama appeals to a lot of people, but remember that it will never be the case for everyone — and that's ok.

after seeing women like Ren Ruyi (Ajourney to love), Li Chang Ge (The Long Ballad), Zhu Xuanji, Zhao Yao, Shen Li, this woman in Joy of Life and a few others who give off this masculine aura even while being in their identity as women, I can't feel this masculinity that He Yan is supposed to give off. Taking for example Li Chang Ge, a princess interested in martial arts who pretended to be a man, Dilraba and a truly feminine woman, the princess that she also embodies, however, she was phenomenal, her temperament, her fights were also more realistic and she managed to be convincing in her gestures, in her dialogues and her personality, Shen Li as a woman was simply this general, even more masculine and virile than men. How can He Yan be so feminine while being raised as a man all her life? Her personality is another story, but her manners in general are not convincing despite her beautiful fight scenes (she screams enormously Gay as a man). I had too much expectation it's my fault especially after watching The Rebel Princess, I wanted to give up at episode 12 but despite all the flaws that this drama has the chemistry between the leads is simply incredible Cheng Lei and Zhou Ye are magnificent together, there have been some very good dramas lately which means that for me this one does not live up to my expectations so far, it's a good drama but nothing more. Everyone has the right to have an opinion without necessarily being called a troll or hateful.

She is also teasing and light hearted in the books, But on alone moments you can see her loneliness
I read the novel and I wasn't a big fan of her character either because I found her very inconsistent at times, that's just my opinion.

the thing is he yan is written like this, we'll get to see the serious side on the later parts. she's a general,…
I read the novel, I know how He Yan is described. It took more than 100 chapters before he finds out that it's a girl while there are only 270 chapters or so. I was hoping that her identity would be revealed earlier in the drama but it was too poorly done, it was more logical in the novel. The novel also has a lot of flaws and some inconsistencies that spoil the reading it is also too descriptive too long at times, I was hoping that the writer of the drama could take all the positive sides of the story and improve the plot to make it more intense and make some parts darker and mature but it is a disappointment. Even in the novel his personality was too inconsistent at times I debated it with other readers on IG and what was my surprise to see that I am not the only one to have felt this, it is not my best reading of the author the drama has not succeeded in sublimating the character of He Yan until now, the drama has too quickly romanticized the story.
