People say it's hard for new dramas to get 40 episodes. That's why I think it will be great to divide it in 2 seasons. One to lead them to the capital, and the second focus in the palace. 20-24 episodes in each season will be wonderful. But it's just my opinion.

They don't need to stretch it. Giving the viewers a room for breathing or processing things is enough. For example, they don't give us any story about why Sun Hao Yue locked Bai Fei Jue (Sun's brother-in-law) or his fate after the case solved.

Peony should not have 2 seasons. They can make it 40 episodes. I lost interest in the second one because I'm fed up with the princess and ex husband's tricks.
Coroner's Diary is different. It has a bunch of casts and vary motives and plots for each cases. They won't bore us, IMO.

If they followed the book, it would be weird. Qin Wan is a physician. She loves to heal and hates seeing people's misery. She even cries over dozens skulls and bones during the second case.
Though the drama doesn't show her affection toward animals, it's safe to say she doesn't hate them. Moreover, if she hurts the horse, the viewers may dislike her character. It will be okay if she hits a mosquito, but a horse ... wait a minute.
