Not for FirstTimers , It’s Way Too Perfect
The Prisoner of Beauty is definitely one of my favorite Chinese historical dramas, starring Liu Yuning and Song Xue’er. I think the storyline is really clear and knows exactly where it’s going. The female lead is portrayed as intelligent and composed she doesn’t act impulsively, which I love. Meanwhile, the male lead is someone who knows his purpose and doesn’t judge people right away. He observes, analyzes, and makes decisions based on what he sees himself. This makes the entire drama feel very calming to watch. The pacing is light, smooth, and really easy to follow. In my opinion, this drama is perfect for viewers in general it’s well crafted and enjoyable. But strangely enough, I wouldn’t recommend this drama to someone watching a Chinese historical drama for the first time. Why? Because this one is too beautiful. I’m worried it will set the bar too high, and people will expect all historical dramas to be this smooth when in reality, many of them are complicated, messy, and hard to follow.
Honestly, The Prisoner of Beauty is one of the best dramas in terms of plot clarity, emotional flow, and watchability. It’s incredibly easy to understand and so enjoyable that you’ll want to rewatch it over and over again. All of the supporting characters are great. They’re solid, reliable, and help the story move in such a satisfying way.
In short, I don’t even know what else to say this drama is just that good. Super recommended, and 100% rewatchable.

Too Much Mystery, Too Little Logic
A Dream Within A Dream, starring Liu Yuning and Li Yitong, was a drama I initially had high expectations for. I genuinely thought it would be intense and gripping, it leaned slightly toward comedy. That said, it still managed to ease my disappointment a little. The storyline falls under the identity genre which honestly, isn’t really my favorite and that made the watching experience a bit exhausting for me.Li Yitong’s character, in particular, frustrated me. Not because I dislike her, but her character felt… a bit dumb. There were so many moments where it should’ve been obvious to her that the two people she was interacting with were actually the same person. Yet somehow, she remained oblivious. It was mentally draining at times, especially because both the male and female leads were actually fighting for the same goal revenge and protection but the lack of clarity made everything feel more complicated than necessary.
Despite all that, I still watched it until the end mainly because I’m a huge fan of Liu Yuning. But I’ll admit, it took a lot of emotional energy. The pacing and the constant identity confusion got under my skin. However, if you’re someone who enjoys dramas centered around secret identities, this might still be a decent watch for you. Just be prepared for some headshaking moments along the way.

A Historical Revenge Drama with Unexpected Twists
Honestly, I feel bad for Zhang Linghe, because in many of his historical dramas, he often ends up being misunderstood or seen as the “bad guy” by the female lead even though he’s actually kind-hearted. In The Princess Royal, Zhao Jinmai character seeks revenge, believing that Zhang linghe character was the one who poisoned her. But the truth is he wasn’t.I think this drama has some shocking plot twists, though some parts are a bit predictable, especially when it comes to figuring out who the real villain is. Still, there’s one twist that genuinely caught me off guard I didn’t expect the true identity of the person who poisoned Zhao Jinmai in her past life.
This is one of the few historical dramas with a happy ending for Zhang Linghe’s character, which is rare and refreshing. While it’s not in my list of top favorites, I still think it’s a well written story with a satisfying revenge arc. The pacing is a bit slow at times, especially when it comes to the female lead finally realizing how kind her husband was in her past life. But overall, I’d still recommend this drama, especially if you like historical romances with a twist of mystery and revenge.

Strong Chemistry, Smooth Plot
Blossom, starring Meng Ziyi and Li Yunrui, is a drama that I personally find good and enjoyable to watch, although it doesn’t quite make it to my list of favorites. One of the most iconic scenes is definitely Li Yunrui’s first appearance with his striking white hair, it’s by far his most visually unforgettable and handsome moment in the whole show. The storyline is actually engaging and a bit complex, but it’s delivered clearly enough to follow without much confusion. I started this drama without high expectations, but it turned out to be a surprisingly satisfying watch. What I especially like is how the relationship between the main couple progresses smoothly. While there are a few misunderstandings, they’re handled maturely and not dragged out unnecessarily.
The chemistry between Meng Ziyi and Li Yunrui is also very strong they really pull you into their story and make the romance feel genuine and heartfelt. Overall, Blossom is a well-executed drama that’s worth watching, especially if you enjoy couples with strong emotional bonds and minimal over-the-top conflict.

Not the Epic War I Expected, but a Worthy Watch
Feud, starring Bai Lu and Joseph Zeng, was my first-ever wuxia or fantasy drama and overall, I think it’s a pretty solid drama. I wouldn’t say I absolutely loved it, but I also wouldn’t call it bad. It was okay.To be honest, I came in expecting an epic story about wars between cities or kingdoms. But it turned out that the main focus of the plot is actually their marriage. The drama mostly revolves around their broken relationship and all the misunderstandings between them. So if you’re hoping for large scale battles, that’s not really what this drama is about.
That said, I still think it’s a good drama. Bai Lu plays a strong, intelligent woman, a little cunning at times, but in a way that makes sense. Her actions are driven by revenge, but also by a desire to open the male lead’s eyes to his mistakes. Meanwhile, Joseph Zeng also gives a great performance. His character truly wants to fix their marriage and doesn’t give up on chasing after his ex-wife, which is touching in its own way.
I think Feud is a good pick if you enjoy fantasy settings, though I personally find it hard to review fantasy dramas in general. Would I rewatch it? Probably not, because the plot feels like it goes in circles at times, and the pacing can get a little frustrating. But overall, it’s still a good drama with strong performances and beautiful visuals.

Smart Leads, Slow Burn, and a Satisfying Revenge
The Double, starring Wu Jin Yan and Wang Xing Yue, is definitely one of my favorite dramas. Even though the plot revolves around identity switching a theme I usually don’t like but I was completely drawn in by how well the story was executed. The female lead is smart, strong, and not the kind of character who constantly whines or plays the victim. The male lead is also intelligent he figures out the truth about her identity on his own, even though she never tells him who she really is.
What I love most about this drama is that even though they initially have different goals, the male lead still chooses to stand by her and help her, no matter what. He fights alongside her all the way to the end until her revenge is fulfilled.
They face a lot of challenges, but their partnership remains strong. This isn’t a drama that relies heavily on romantic scenes, but you’ll absolutely feel the connection and emotions between the two leads. It’s a slow burn romance, but a very satisfying one.
I truly recommend The Double both leads are strong, smart, and perfectly matched. Their chemistry, loyalty, and character development make this drama a must watch.

Two Dominant Leads That Might Be Too Much to Handle
Who Rules the World, starring Zhao Lusi and Yang Yang, actually has a solid plot and is loved by many. But honestly, I haven’t finished this drama myself. Mainly because the wuxia or fantasy genre isn’t really my favorite, and in this drama, both the male and female leads are extremely dominant and powerful.Personally, I prefer dramas where the female lead is smart and the male lead is strong. But in this case, the female character seems to overpower the male one, making her come off as a bit rebellious and that made watching it feel a bit tiring. Which is unfortunate, because I really like Zhao Lusi.
From the reviews I’ve read, the storyline is actually pretty good. It’s just that the dynamic between the two strong leads made it mentally exhausting to keep up. I’d still recommend this drama to people who enjoy wuxia or strong female lead stories, but for me, I might only continue watching it when I run out of other shows to watch.

I Loved Them, But I Couldn’t Handle the Misunderstandings
Are You The One, starring Zhang Wanyi and Wang Churan, is actually a good drama, and I especially loved the way they call each other “Fu Ren” and “Fu Jin” it became a really iconic part of their relationship in this drama. I also have to say, Zhang Wanyi looks so handsome here, and Wang Churan is absolutely stunning. But I have to admit… I didn’t finish it.
It’s not because the drama is bad it’s just that I personally don’t enjoy identity-based storylines. I kind of spoiled myself with some clips and summaries, and I found out that the couple ends up separating for a while before eventually getting back together. That already drained my excitement. I stopped around episode 20, right when Wang Churan’s character begins to regain her memories.
One of the reasons I got frustrated is because the male lead felt a bit too slow to act not necessarily slow in terms of response time, but more like emotionally sluggish. I got a bit impatient because the drama itself has a slow pace, and the male lead hides his identity for quite a long time. The misunderstandings pile up, and I just didn’t have the energy to keep going.
It’s honestly a shame, because I really wanted to enjoy this drama. The visual chemistry between the leads is amazing they both look fantastic, and their dynamic has a lot of potential. But knowing that her regained memory would bring back conflict and betrayal just made me emotionally exhausted before even reaching the end.
That said, I would still recommend Are You The One to others. The story is solid, especially from episodes 1 to 20 it has a good structure and a strong romantic pull. It’s just not the kind of drama for someone like me, who lacks the patience for slow-burn identity plots and drawn out misunderstandings.

A Must Watch for First Time Viewers of Chinese Historical Dramas
Honestly, I really miss this drama because it was my very first historical Chinese drama. And thanks to Story of Kunning Palace, I immediately fell in love with the genre. I think this drama, starring Bai Lu and Zhang Linghe, is truly well done especially for someone like me who’s new to historical C-dramas.In my opinion, this drama sits right in the middle. It’s not too heavy, but it’s not exactly light either. That’s why I highly recommend it to anyone who wants to start exploring historical Chinese dramas. Trust me if you’re looking for something super light, I worry it might ruin your expectations. Most historical Chinese dramas are much heavier and more complex, so Story of Kunning Palace is the perfect entry point.
In the story, Zhang Linghe plays a major red flag character, while Bai Lu portrays a smart and strategic woman. Their dynamic makes the drama feel balanced and not frustrating to watch. Even though there are a lot of conflicts in the plot, the way both characters handle them with logic and clever thinking allows viewers to enjoy the drama without feeling overwhelmed.
Many characters in the drama disliked Bai Lu’s character, especially in the beginning. But despite all the hatred and traps set against her, she always had a clever strategy to counter everything. She truly embodied the role of a smart and sharp-minded woman.

Smart Detective? Not Quite ?
Honestly, I’m really sorry because I actually really like the male lead, but not the female lead. In my opinion, Deng En Xi, who plays a supposedly smart detective, should be able to solve problems in a clean and logical way… but she doesn’t. She constantly throws herself into trouble and always ends up being rescued by Shen Du. There are just too many situations where she stubbornly insists on investigating things on her own, only to cause more trouble for herself.Deng En Xi’s acting also feels stiff, and she often has this ungrateful and guilty expression, even though Shen Du has saved her multiple times. Whenever she’s trying to solve a case, as a “smart detective” she should have facial expressions that reflect intelligence but instead, Deng En Xi gives a wide-eyed, extremely confused look.
It’s such a shame, because this drama could have been great. But due to several things whether it’s Deng En Xi’s acting or how the drama portrayed her character. I just don’t think it fits the image of a “brilliant detective.”
