If you just want to watch ss1 for the sake of the plot, you can do ep 1-4 and then ep 19-20 the rest kinda fills like a comic filler with important links thrown in here and there for a few minutes, if I reckon correctly ep 4 is the last time GYJ appears in SS1 as Naksu's dead body... however once you really get into it you'd probably want to watch the whole thing, re-watching the whole thing however felt impossible for me, specially with ADHD, SS2 is a different story tho, already watched it 6times by its 3rd year, lol

No, In Gang committing suicide was always part of the plot unless you expected something different from the webtoon plot, they changed few things here and there but yeah the plot doesn't get lost for it. You might've noticed him throwing away all the alcohols and sleeping and other medications and thought he was getting back on track, but what you saw was a person who's about to end things soon, thus wouldn't need those substances. That's a tell tell sign of a suicidal person, all the depression suddenly vanishes, since they know the end is closer to soon. I still hoped a better ending for him tho, it just got worse instead
