Zou Yue is the screenwriter, not the author of the novel and it has been a good adaptation of the source material so far.

It's a nice change to see a character dealing with serious injuries and not miraculously recover from them overnight. He was literally at death's door, suffered several attacks that hindered his recovery and it has been less than 6 months since he was originally found wounded and dying.

He will have his time to shine in the last part of the drama.

In the original novel, that character was a time traveler from the present days. And I think she is one here as well, even if they won't explicitly say it - she knows CPR and that sweets cause cavities.
