I think the director hates/is uncomfortable with happy endings... hence the false epilogues with the ashes laid by the peach tree and the healer sittinf by ML shaking his head.

The director killed off the ML from The Double (offscreen) even though the novel had a happy ending, and then was bullied by fans into making a short special episode where the leads are happy with children.

Production team/network/sponsors forced the director to change the face of one of the actors because he acted in a BL drama and he chose to replace him with an actor known from the most (in)famous Chinese BL drama of all time? This is a statement.
