Indeed, this is how the character of the SML is also in the webtoon and Manhwa. In the source material he originally collides with her mother to force an arranged marriage with Bom and her mom forces her to go on dates with him. Also, on their 1st date he slanders her saying he knows about the Seoul incident and that marrying him would be the best for her when she is in that condition. Later on when FL masters the courage to commit to ML and accept her feelings for him she tells her mom that she rejects the arranged marriage and tells the SML to stop approching her, so what does the SML do !?! he awaits infront of her door and when she exits forces a kiss, the FL immediatly pushes him and slaps him!
These are just some examples of how petty the SML is and not a good character/friend to the ML. So yes, i agree with the writers on the series ( i mean at the end they cant put all the source material in a 12 ep drama) of how they wrote him and how they are trying to portray him in the KDRAMA to stay as much as possible close to the webtoon/manhwa.

Ahn Bo Hyun is portraying a very muscular, stiff man from Busan... think about the a rural area in your country and try to imagine the personality of the ML!!! If you have read the webtoon and the Manhwa you would have seen that ABH is crushing his role!!! He embodies the ML as the source material 100% ... that is the character he is portraying. Again, if you feel the characters are cartoonish, well, it is... simply BECAUSE THEY ARE SUPPOSED TO BE LIKE THAT!!! IT IS A WEBTOON ADAPTATION...
