I am quite concerned about this new approach. I can envision a complete lack of moral/cultural focus. If anyone…
100% correct.

As soon as I saw it, my heart sank. I was not really a great fan of the original, but it was refreshing, and I think for a lot of people too, who had never seen a humane depiction of North Korea or North Koreans.

Now watch Netflix reverse the politics into something reactionary, anti-communist and dehumanising of North Koreans in the way they usually do in Hollywood.

This is the agenda they have been pursuing once it was clear Kdrama was taking over the world. Netflix rushed in there with their billions simply to ensure that the captive audience for a KDrama would not see the more progressive elements, but would be subjected to the more backward narratives that Hollywood and the National Security State have decided Americans, and the world should be forced to see

They tried this with Extraordinary Attorney Woo and the creators refused. But there will always be people willing to reach for the immediate brass ring and forgo the more sustainable and valuable gold that comes from artistic integrity, culturally authentic creativity and principled storytelling - for money. Very sad development indeed

I just noticed this blatant misinformation for the first time: “ Who, like the majority of China harbors a hatred against communists.”

How could the majority have harboured a hatred against Communists when the masses were on the side of the Communists, and the nationalists who held the government formally, only really had the loyalty and support of urban elites in a few coastal provinces? That’s because they were partial to the foreign imperialists, which is exactly how they lost the Civil War and were chased out or rather ran away.

The whole point of the story is that, despite having started out in well-off families, it was only Zhou Yao Hua and his family who were very involved in the brutal and corrupt Kuomintang Nationalist party. The story ends with them switching sides to support the Majority of Chinese people - the Communists!

That blurb totally misrepresents the story as well as actual Chinese Communist history by disparaging the preferences of over 1 billion people who reject capitalism just as they rejected the Nationalists.

I don’t know what censorship or facts you are speaking to, but this is a perfect example of white supremacy, and queer imperialism combined.

Chinese people fought the United States and seven other of its Western allies for 22 years so that they would never have to listen to your opinions about how they should run their country again. Do you know what they called the period in which they had to listen to what Americans had to say about how they should run their society- they called this the Century of Humiliation.

1 .4 billion people died in the fight to get you people and your corrupt, genocidal values out of their lives. 22 million of them died for that freedom and Americans do not have any legal and certainly no moral authority to be telling Chinese what they’re doing in their own country is not good enough for them.

LGBT people in China, like everyone else do not suffer from a range of inhumane abuses ordinary Americans have to deal with as normal. China raised more 850 people out of poverty in the last 30 - 40 years (more than the whole of Latin America) while Americans have been getting poorer without a real wage increase since the 1970s and they’re literally having their lifespan reduced while longevity increases in China. African-Americans can still be murdered in the streets with impunity by police, women cannot control their fertility and gay and trans people can be harassed and even killed in public toilets with the government standing idly by - none of which could happen in China without it being a national emergency . Your coloniser dreams are not the values that Chinese people subscribe to, in fact they are nightmares for the 2/3 majority of the world, and best kept to yourself

I haven’t got the time to respond patiently to this, except to say, perhaps listen to actual Chinese LGBT people who live in China and let them tell you where queer people are flourishing.

There’s literally a cultural war against LGBT people, especially trans people going on in the USA and in western Europe, especially the UK. Where every few weeks we can hear about a violent altercation and even death against lgbt people esp trans. This does not obtain in China where the most famous TV talk show person there is trans.

So leaving this for now. If you really care to find out the facts

@JI246 Homosexuality is indeed accepted officially, and there are even public trans healthcare clinic for people who want to transition, which is not yet available in the west .

They just do not have gay marriage which is something that goes along with neoliberal capitalism and they do not have pride marches which again is another capitalist corporate institution.

But it is not correct to say that it is not fully accepted. It is part of human rights in socialist countries such as Cuba similar to the rights of women to live with dignity along with everyone else.

There will of course still be individual prejudice, like most of the places, but this is not the position of the Chinese state.

How come this series is so highly rated and comments are so good? I'm sorry to say that, but I couldn't even finish…
@ alepikes Definitely LoA is not their best work and bombed so hard that acting couple which was an outstanding BL duo and one of the most lucrative and successful, collapsed straight afterwards. But do watch To Sir With Love; there should be subs on YouTube. If not you can find it subbed in all the usual places.

I should add that to To Sir With Love, was the best, overall Lakorn in the whole of Thailand in the year that it was released winning almost a clean sweep of awards from acting to writing to directing, costuming and music. TSWL became the first BL ever to be able to reach these kinds of accolades, and by the last episode they were able to announce they had secured funding for the next project which sadly fell way below the previous big hit.

The fact that some international fans have made some extremely irrelevant comments about TSWL is also an indication that most of them do not know what they’re talking about when it comes to evaluating high quality, Queer Thai dramas

🤝

They have no idea what the OG was about, why it was so impactful, memorable and well loved.

They could just have left this one alone, which would’ve been better for everyone involved.

Nope. They go out of their way to let audiences know Wei RuoLai has no interest in the line of women he firmly rejects and the only person he has stars in his eyes and would die for is that female.

We have all decided the two major women characters are in love with each other as their tag on AO3 can attest
