Truly the women CPs were outstanding in this BL Lakorn especially Mae Li/ Aunt Jia whose love knew no bounds! They don’t get enough kudos for their acting as top flight professionals nor for their characters whose relationship told a separate love story on its own.

Backed up by Khun Chan and Ying Ping with their ride-or-die lady’s maids, our senior fujoshi Mae Bua, and even Xiao Tong and her girl Mud, To Sir With Love may’ve been the romance story of Tian and Jiu but the women drove this story, they kept us endlessly entertained and enthralled us on the edge of our seats for 17 straight episodes without relent. They can all take a well-deserved bow!

Im outraged with this review. I think it misjudges the style in which is filmed. It’s a Lakorn not an standard…
100% agree and I feel sad that someone who lacks cultural understanding and brought a frankly xenophobic as well as irrelevant viewpoint to cultural products he doesn’t have the intellectual humility to even try to understand. Khun Chai is a cross between Thai Bl and Chinese BL (Danmei) especially the narrative style and meant to appeal to Danmei fans whether Chinese or not. This is what Personally drew me to it.

I said from the beginning that although it made things a bit of a challenge for those outside Asia, adding English subs much later than usual giving Asian audiences the chance to receive and assess this amazing BL Lakorn, first, was not accidental. I see what they tried to do . By the time most typical western BL fans give Khun Chai a look-in the narrative has already been established and on Asian terms. So often we see mediocre content get snapped up by western fans because it’s more relatable and caters to their priorities but then the same groups trash anything BL that goes over their heads or focusses more on romance and emotional bonding than other things.

It’s so much easier to say this particular BL isn’t for me and move on to the nearly 100 more released just this year alone that validate you more as a viewer looking for the most narrow representation of human interaction or artistic expression.

No matter one’s age one can still learn lessons, especially the most important lesson in Asian BL, that is how to introspect more and be the example you want to see a world that truly values difference 💕

Does this involve like a lot of homophobia? cause i saw its set in like the 1940s and i really dont want to watch…
There is bloodshed in episode one but it’s quite contained concerning what you are interested in avoiding so you can fast forward that but even the rest of the quote - homophobia is more protective rather than people trying to destroy the couple for who they are and there are plenty of sweet, hot and loving moments that overshadow and also contextualise those actions. It’s beautiful!

7.9 rating... guys are you serious ???????
Incels in international fandoms abound on this space right now hyping mediocrity and downvoting BLs that are the most popular in Asia. .They did the same to Unforgotten Night. Inflating the ratings of trash mafia rape series and any sex focussed shows with no plot. You can check. Pay them no mind

Hi is there a novel the script is based on
Thanks! I just watched an interview with the three writers and the male director yesterday. Not sure why they’re not listed anywhere because they’re doing an excellent job and I’d love to see what their other writing work is and watch it

Sorry I just realise I may have confused myself first ha ha.

The Song family is a polygamous family with a Chinese heritage living in Thailand. Polygamy is no longer legal in Thailand as of 1935. Although I believe the king still has multiple wives and consorts today.

The old family law before 1935 assigned wives to three categories.
Before polygamy was outlawed in Thailand, it went like this:

1. The first was called mia klang muang (เมียกลางเมือง), the 'official wife', whom the husband's parents had "acquired for him". - Mae Li
2. The second was known as mia klang nok (เมียกลางนอก), the 'minor wife', whom the man acquired after his first marriage. - Khun Chan
3. The third was mia klang thasi (เมียกลางทาสี), the title given to slave wives who were purchased from the mother and father of their prior owners - Mae Bua

Children of all these unions were recognised as legitimate

Chan, like Ying Pin, comes from an aristocratic family (who who fell on hard times), which is why she feels so aggrieved to be in second place to Li, whom Chan disparages as just an opera singer. But as we can see Li was already a very ambitious and accomplished woman even before she
met Magnate Song. Tian obviously gets his love of opera from his mum

Hope that helps.

Ying means Lady and Pin is her name. So in this case, Ying is like a title and Pin is her actual name.
Ying is her given name. Pin is the family name. Thai first names, like Japanese ones, come first. Unlike other Asian countries, such as China and Korea, where the family name comes first followed by the given name.

So she and her love interest make up the Ying-Yang couple 😀

Ok it’s not adapted from a novel; it’s an original screenplay.

A Thai person tells me it’s written by a channel 31 writing team so I have asked for the names so we can see what else they’ve done

Khun Chai reminds me so much of my favourite Danmei Killer and Healer, which was also in the same historical period but only got a novel based on the excellent screenplay after the success of the drama

I think you are right on both parts. As an international fan I am finding it too frustrating waiting for the subtitles.…
@Claddagh I’m enjoying it also and use the wait between subbing days - Fridays and Mondays for the previous two episodes, to improve my Thai.

Actually it is a BL. It just has a high budget, very sophisticated writers and top flight actors. Even the biggest BL is still small scale with minor actors compared with Lakorns.

Chinese BL/Danmei adaptations are like this, big, expensive epics like Game of Thrones for a wide audience., such as The Untamed, Killer and Healer and Word of Honor. Film did an interview this week pointing out they made this BL not only with BL fans in mind but the whole viewing audience.

You’re right they’re not promoting it to International BL fans but Thai BL fans are aware and very excited about it. Also Chinese BL fans because of the Chinese heritage featured

Kamol’s enemies fear him while Kinn’s do not. Why, because we actually see Kamol doing mafia work and using…
@Cupcake I didn’t see any romance but it’s neither here nor there if you enjoyed it.

Not every commercial venture targeted at BL fans is BL but I will not interrupt the fantasy because I can see it’s comforting for you bc it’s not harming anyone 🌸

@Cupcake Toxic masculinity isn’t about looks it’s about behaviour and expecting men to look a certain way in order to carry out certain roles effectively. Masculinity is entirely made up so it can be anything, but insisting there’s only one way to be/look masculine enough to be effective is homophobic because what you’re really referring to is straightness. That is homophobia.

Women can embody and project these ideas thoughtlessly if they haven’t thought about these things or been educated about them. It’s not name calling, but calling out people who bring ethnocentric ideas from their own culture to pass judgement on people from cultures they know little about and clearly do not respect.

I’ve also enjoyed the exchange we have had and hearing more about how you arrived at the impressions you mentioned. What would be
really civilised is to be conscious of how your words affect other fans
and not contribute to a toxic atmosphere. We can all do this. Being
cruel and unnecessarily critical isn’t clever or fun and you and I know there are other ways one can participate in fandom without resorting to that

@Cupcake I blocked the person who was replying in this thread with violence so as you can see I went back and edited the first line to manually type in their name to make it clear who I was replying to, but likely you overlooked that.

Yeah he looks like an Asian man. I realise a lot of you are young and not culturally sophisticated but criticising an Asian series because they didn’t make a character white enough is something I thought was too low for people who enjoy enjoy BL to do bc it’s very ignorant and racist. It’s the reason these comments come from western fans who can only accept things if they’re done the way they’re acceptable in the in Europe or North America. #StopAsianHate

kamol is the least mafia looking mafia boss i've ever seen lol
@Lalalila I’ve been thinking about this comment. Maybe it’s because you only see the unsuccessful ones whose mugshots you’re familiar with are taken after they’ve been captured and their way to jail. The Hollywood fantasy of mafia look is an exaggerated fantasy
