Extremely moving. This Ice Queen had a few tears in the final moments. That says alot.
It's disappointing that with all of the effort and money that went into this that multiple people failed to edit a few scenes (v distracting to say the least) and I hope they are prevented from screwing up future works. That being said, this series is excellent and when reflecting on it as a whole, I wouldn't feel right to lower my rating because of it. It would be super cool if a magical fairy bestowed upon us an intact, touched up version to eliminate those visual faux pas.
Really liked this on many levels. Great cast, provides great commentary on modern/historical and fact/fiction, well-thought out, leaves room for you to think and interpret...the ending credits are played out in parallel reversal. How clever!! I randomly came across this and am puzzled why I hadn't heard of it before. It's really great. It's not high budget, idol filled, or superdeveloped. And TG because it would have been ruined it.
Who knows what happened fr....it's China so failure to pay taxes could mean 1. someone powerful " in the business" is behind it (quite common) 2. accountant or associated company responsible for handling screwed up 3. his own agent or rep company is the culprit or 4. DL decided not to pay taxes knowing that Chinese celebs regularly get into tax problems and are immediately blacklisted, public presence erased, and lose their entire future career (which seems highly unlikely considering the stakes and rep of Chinese prisons). But, hey, who knows.
I thought it dragged a bit in the middle but I am glad I didn't drop it. I initially enjoyed the quirky and funny antics of the flashbacks but got a bit bored (there are so many 30 yr old/high school flashback cdramas) and I couldn't figure out the draw....but towards the mid 20s of the episodes, what the series is about emerges. Imho, it should be edited it down to 16 to 20 episodes. As far as FCC's performance, I enjoyed it. His expressions were very subtle and often ackward or "at a loss," which is exactly what I thought his character was supposed to be like. I thought the caring and considerate aspects of the character came across as well, so my opinion of him differs quite a bit from the neg reviews.
Just finished Immortal Samsara and wanted to try L&R again (orig dropped 2/3) because of Cheng Yi. That was a bad idea bc I really liked CY and YZ paired together (stand alone too). It's not that this FL is the worst in my book, but she just isn't on par with ML imo. Maybe it's the character? I'll put it on hold and return when I can give it a chance without comparing it.
Note about the ending: It says 61 episodes (S1 plus S2) in many places. Ep 60 and 61 are only a few minutes long and appear to be fan specials to appease the masses. I haven't read it, but I feel it ends on 59 and as far as HE or BE, it really is open to interpretation (but it isn't hanging in the air tg). I think it's a better piece, if it ends on 59. That being said, I found ep 60 quite cute and am glad I watched it. Ep 61 is a must for sugar addicts. And in 2026, I am welcoming any bit of positive, cheesy, sugary, fluffy to aid in my need for escapism.
I was in the mood for this style xianxia, and it delivered. What stood out for me was Chen Yi. Generally speaking, I think he's a good actor. But in this series, I found myself rewinding to read the subtitles...I was spellbound repeatedly. Not by his looks (I will admit he is quite beautiful), but his performance was stellar and heart fluttering at times. To think his leg was in a cast as well....mindblowing what level he was operating on.
"Sorry, I'm being weird. I should go take my meds." Not only do I love that line, but it really says it all, doesn't it? I mean it began like p*rn, then 80s wild west fashion shoot, enter the dragon, RIP a few hotties...and then I just about lost it with the noodle snatching paw. And yes, I'm sitting here still watching it thinking that really should be my line.
For the most part, I agree with a lot of the points of praise others have made. The romantic parts were done beautifully.
I strongly advise people who like the series and make it to ep 11, to stop at 22 min and fast forward to 42:49 to finish it. Imo, it takes nothing away, except for a terrible section where it felt like it morphed into generic copy cat version that managed to get ridiculous. I think it is worth it to pick it back up at 42:49, though.
I saw that ALTL was the preq. Since I haven't read the books, I checked ALTL out prior to rewatching. I now see that there are so many parts of LYF that flew over my head and LYF feels much more meaningful. Now, for me, ALTL and LYF go hand in hand. I think the circumstances and choices that LYF characters make are better understood when considering the entire picture. Although you can watch both series as stand alone, LYF, in many ways, is the result of ALTL .
[Please note ALTL is from the Eternal Love xianxia period. It may feel dated to some, but the nostalgic style works well next to the slightly more contemporary LYF. ]

It's really a very good series through and through. I'm not someone who needs a HE or even prefers it over a quality drama, so this isn't a complaint but rather a comment. This series is gut wrenching for me. There are other far more bitter or tragic series out there but for some reason this one messes me up every time. I thought rewatching it would be better, but nooooo. It just messes with me at an even earlier point. For this genre, I guess the story and acting are that good. I'm all bitter sweet-wanting to bargain another way out-not getting my way-yet won't turn the show off. Ugh!!
Lee Dong Wook clad in a trench and Gong Yoo clad in military coat walking side by side on a dark country road...bless whoever made that happen. *sigh* I still really, really love this. This series demonstrates why k-dramas rock. How did I forget abt OST, heart fluttering Gong Yoo, and so many classic scenes. Another steller Lee El performance. Kim Go Eun was a perfect Ji Eun Tak. I love watching GY and LDW perform together. I needed a dose of escapism and this series sucks me in each time.
Watched it because I'm a Machida Keita fan. Loved him once again, but whoa, Takeuchi Ryoma floored me. He simply made it difficult to focus on anything but him. I literally felt mesmerized - not for his looks or moves (which are praiseworthy) but everything....Suzuki Shinya was like the embodiment of Pan or a human work of kinetic art. The ending wasn't realistic and that bummed me out a little bc it felt too fluffy for the show. It's still a good show and I recommend it...just the end was a very different vibe + 100% "wouldn't it be nice. "
I get that they want to buffer the heavy subject matter to appease the masses, and some of the comedic interjection works well, but I think some parts should have been omitted. Even so, on the parts I don't care for, wow Joseph Zeng is phenominal. He can pull of the aloof, subtle, and overt. Impressive.
The cast are seriously great actors and make the idol drama really far above "idol" drama expectations while retaining the cute, quirky, lightheartedness. Just rewatched and omg I forgot about the precious 100 day anniversary scene. One of the most golden Kdrama high school idol cringey scenes I can recall. The sibling chemistry and execution. Angels and toenails will never be the same for me, therefore, imho, even the side bits are hall of fame. Liked it the first time I watched it, but after visiting it, I like it even more.
A good choice for someone looking for a quirky, light hearted kdrama. However, imho, it's nothing that stands out. The actors are fine, the story is alright...but after the first episodes it felt meh.
I'm a JKY fan. I was curious to see him in DK. At ep 6, I'm bored and over it. Maybe it's because Born Again, Atypical Family, and NWABU were just so darn impressive. I'll keep DK in my back pocket for after an emotional melodrama.
