This was common practice in ancient china.. this was way before the three kingdoms were even implemented. Once you were ordered to marry the king, you couldn't back away at all. After the king died, you could marry the next king. (at one point the concubines, wives, and close servants were actually buried alive with their husband... brutal). That part was not fantasy, so the drama couldn't be ruined if it was showing what really happened.
This is a true life story. This princess married the king, then married the brother when the king died. There are some things added for fantasy. However, the plot and the romantic connection between the brother of the king, and the princess was very real.
This drama is based on real life events. The full story of these people does end with a 'happy ending' if you mean they get married, and have kids. However, the real Weng Gui dies before she does.
The rest is as close as it happened in history. She was not in a traveling troupe, but was marginalized because her grandfather was disgraced. She did marry the king. Went through a lot of turmoil from jealousy from the wives of both the king and Weng Gui. When the emperor died, she married Weng Gui who ascended to the throne. She was a very influential and loved figure in the history of China.
There are other stories similar, just because these situations were very common in ancient china. Issues with the wives and concubines. Power struggle with the court officers. Murdering between wifes/concubines was common, as well as causing the lower in rank to become infertile or lose pregnancies etc.
I read a review above that said the story was 'cliché' and made me laugh a little, because this actually happened. I don't know where this particular show ends, if it ends when they get married, or if it goes all the way to the end of her life.

Does Bao Qi really have it all? She has to answer to the Ren family and those nasty greatuncles. Cuixi is now independent, and doesn't have to answer to anyone. She is the one who has it best. Plus she is making her own family with all the apprentices that she is recruiting.
I know a lot of you hate Xuetang. However, remember this is a 'historical drama' that is not based on 'fantasy'. This was how society was back in the day. Xuetang is actually a very good husband compared on how the rest of the men were back then. Both Xuetang and Rufeng are good men. This drama doesn't represent anyone from real life, but the situations are pretty real, is a pity the drama gets negative points for showing us a depiction on how hard life was for women, and how courageous some woman were. Those women would have failed if they didn't have husbands like Xuetang and Rufeng. So glad we have come a long way from the times of the past. Don't forget that in some countries the battle is still going on for equality between men and women... even in the US, that battle is still going.

I wonder if the fact that the parents decided to sacrifice themselves to save the baby is the cause for those who 'died' to come back? No one even attempted to save any of the ones who were sentenced to die (besides the truly lame job of protecting the woman by the detective and the lawyer). Could that be the way to save humanity? To protect each other? How many of us would risk our lives to protect someone else? -- Truly a good point to ponder about. We live in a world where people refuse to even wear a mask that may or may not protect other's lives, even though it does not cost or affect anyone wearing them.

Yes, I mean.. he was in the last episode.. so I guess he will become active on the coming up season. It seems a lot of the previous actors will come back as those who were sent to 'hell' are coming back to life.. including the 'founder' of the religion.
He reminds me of Wallace Huo so much! (Wallace Huo is still tops in my list.. but Liu Yue Xi is a very close second!) Acting skills and looks are top knotch!
This drama is not for everyone obviously based on the mix of comments. There is more than what meets the eyes. Can't wait for 2nd season to come. However, I fear they will do what they did with Arthdal Chronicles and leave us hanging. Good series that need a bit of thinking get sidetracked or abandoned. In the first part a 'religious cult' got all over it, to then fall flat on their faces at the end of the 1st season. I wonder if that same cult theme will continue on the 2nd season, or if they will move on to a pre-apocalyptic era... or if humanity will learn to work together to figure out what is going on.
