Seeing people's reaction, or lack thereof, to ZYC not even counting YL as a teammate, I suspect this isn't really about Ying Lei, but about ZYZ.
I bet if ZYZ had shown the twig earlier, just for it to be snatched away by LL, they'd be calling him an idiot for showing off their last bargaining chip while not in a state to protect it.
No offense but you almost sound like WX just needs to have a male partner. Even if she doesn't see him in that…
I get your point. And it's a lovely take. But whether I agree or disagree, what you said further cements that even without her, the ZYZ we know would exist. He'd chosen the road opposite Li Lun long before he met her. And would still dedicate himself to protecting both worlds regardless.
Knowing her and others only made him less suicidal. He still believed he deserved to die. He just didn't want to anymore. And it's apparent that while he would give his life for her without hesitation, she wasn't ready to do the same.

What affected ZYZ's character the most was Zhao Wan Er, his own interactions with the humans and maybe Li Lun. The ZYZ we got to know was the way he was because of that. WX and the team only made him wish to die less. Which achieved little considering he still ended up sacrificing himself for them.
Started out great. Could've been much better if the leads actually kept being treated like the leads. Seems like ZYZ's character was the best received part of this drama in China. Good. He was indeed the single most consistent thing in this. Considering the fun and fresh take on him, his styling and his near flawless portrayal, it's not a miracle that he manged to not become overshadowed by the writer's sometimes obvious efforts to push others to the spotlight. As there was almost nothing equally enticing about the other characters, except ZYC's circumstances. BJ's character had potential that was barely used.
But it IS a miracle that the drama could still hold on, albeit lost a lot of its unique charm. Probably hard carried by the visuals, some of the cast's increasingly good performances and the touching bromance. Because the romance was clearly in a battle against the creators, it couldn't possibly win.
I honestly think this could've been another TTEOTM.
For those that keeps going “why did XiaoZhuo fall in love with WenXiao, he saw fake demon WenXiao and suddenly…
It's how the drama showed it that makes it weird. It's like one of those bollywood movies when the guy only realizes it after his tomboy friend starts to dress like a girl. The fact that they spent years together without any serious indication makes it even more weird for me.
Besides, more than half the drama is over, the writer realized "oh, we didn't make obvious a love triangle for sml? You kidding, everyone does that", when the main couple had long been established. Felt redundant at that point and just a possible plot device. A lot of us thought this drama was past that. So it's weird.
ZYC wasn't registering for national defense. He was having a conversation about their group of friends. And they were 6 friends. Not 5.

Get a power boost? His enemy ended up having the power.
Killing the villain? His enemy did it.
Changing the world's racism? His enemy did it.
His journey? To find his enemy. Who ended up finding him instead.
Don't get me wrong. I'm not saying ZYC did nothing. But his role revolves around understanding and helping the main character solve things.
Person: ZYC is the hero though.
Me: how so?
Person: Main couple didn't have screentime. I came here for them
😶
I'm asking what did this hero exactly do that "overshadowed" ZYZ for you?
