i know it sucks. our whole life is mired in it and part of what we as artists do is either cover/unveil that. the politics of living. as years go by the curiosity gets less and less so it seems egregious when people react in anger as opposed to making creators beholden to us if they want us to watch. it's unfortunate. we're all different and obviously i care about this kind of stuff more than the average person too but yea there's a lot of background and history that some of us know so it makes me much more sympathetic to people upset but a lot more angry. i don't really ever find just simple comfort in this stuff but i don't necessarily think we should. also part of art is thinking and being uncomfortable, not running from it! (this isn't a dig on you at all! just a tendency i see)

the gist is that the us supported korean regime in 1950—ironically/sadly two years after the UN (so america/the west) declared ROK; the same year, and iirc the same month, as the nakba—murdered 100k+ of its inhabitants under the guise of their safety from the filthy commies.

the show carries this lineage from the horrors of the summer of terror to the gwangju uprising to the democracy movement. instead of blaming the fucking NSA (nat'l security agency) they blame "north korean spies" because they love the status quo hate the idea of liberation that much. some of the protesters are still alive too and iirc they made a mockery of what happened to some german south koreans during this time though i can't remember specifically what. just awful. oh i went to check and now i remember (sorry i was getting timelines/subject matter of the drama mixed up). (but jung hae in's character is a korean in germany; to make him an "nk spy" spits in the face of the korean victims who were murdered because they were thought to be nk spies but there is something SPECIFIC that i am looking for that i can't find wah)

i mean obviously people don't. but that's what they will encounter. the world isn't apolitical. and me personally politics are embedded in art and i think critically about what i watch. it's a way for me to keep rigorous, learn more about myself, themes, art, and the world.

it's because people are upset.

all art is political. artists know this. any artist that says it isn't is stupid and lying. purposefully. if the show doesn't air for a week because of the tragedy of jeju, if it acknowledged what happened a month prior with the president and his attempted coup, if the show is literally about a man that worked at the fucking blue house, is a hostage negotiator, has a woman in it who is beholden to him at a time of intense suffering of women in sk. if if if i can go on about all the POLITICAL messages in this show.? then it is definitely political. do journalists just talk about dogs and ponies? what reality is this? what a ridiculous supposition that they are completely separate. when people say this, they're calling themselves intellectually inert.

so then they weren't canceled even though half the cast is abusers and rapists. because canceling isn't a real thing with material consequences. i mean i know you guys don't care about anything but like at least be consistent.

it's actually really fun. i mean don't watch on netflix but if u want to watch stick with it like. what they withhold is the best part.

i mean i think their reactions are fine in the grand scheme of things bc yea i think mdl is important. ppl flocked here bc this IS the biggest data collector. it's literally exclusively asian imdb they have more information here. and showrunners have come on here. so i oscillate between yes this experience on this page isn't great but otoh...don't do that lol

you can look at mondoweiss which is a jewish run pro palestine anti zionist (actually anti zionist) publication for updates if you don't trust palestinians to tell their own story—but you fucking should. electronicintifida is headed by a palestinian (and has a jewish EIC). one of my favorite books as an artist is 'on zionist literature' by ghassan kanafani. if you are into liberation and want to do art that is a book that will expand your mind and have you divest from culture on a grand scale (IE wanting to make shows like wtpr) and understand the times we are in despite it being decades old. there are infinite goddamn resources out there. use them and motivate yourself. do not be cowed by these losers.
