People Just hate Actresses more than Actors for apparently no Reason. Maybe, Just because she is a Woman. Or, The Kdrama industry does not give good character development to female Characters in Dramas
Actually most of the people here seem to agree with you about Oh Hae Young so I think your perspective definitely…
For me the scene where he talks English is the worst. The only reason I was able to finish it was because of Jun Ji Hye... Makes me think that he doesn't put any effort at all to his characters.
Among your list I've seen only City Hunter, W and Another Oh Hae Young. I always feel this aura around Park Min Young, that sje always chises the Damsel in Distress type of role and that is one of the reason why I hate her characters. The only character that I liked of her was from Healer, and that was not an amazing performance or something. Regarding the other two, I didn't feel much about W because that drama had one of the most unrealistic and worst endings I've seen in a kdrama. Actually I didn't want an ending where Lee Jong Suk turns into a human, it's just so unrealistic and puts you off. As per Oh Hae Young, I would like to disagree with you. Although her character somewhat had a Pitful setting to it, but oddly enough I enjoyed the drama so much (maybe it's just because their theory/approach towards foresight plotline (I've never seen anything like that before), and that in turn elevates the whole drama into a good drama for me. Also I liked the fact that both the leads are not good people, (call me a sadist) but I find dramas with Leads being too good as cliché, obnoxious and fake. So for a change when I see that both the leads are not too good of a person, I loved it. I like it that they are Selfish (as Humans are Selfish creatures and we just don't to face that fact in our escapism from the real world). Though I hated the forced kiss scene in Oh Hae Young, and I couldn't understand why people say that it is a very Romantic scene.
One of the main problems with dramas is that they triesvto introduce the FL as a strong woman, but in the end will make her a damsel in distress to be rescued by the ML. It is one of the reason why I hate most of Lee Min Ho's dramas (the other being the fact that he's not a good actor and is overrated)
OMG I ABSOLUTELY LOVE LOVE LOVED THAT EPISODE!At the start I was a little weary since it somehow seemed like all…
At firstvI though that Mr. Ju will be a bad guy and Prof An will make him to be a better person by trusting him and all... But the drama was like middle finger on your face, we are not gonna do that here... There seem to be a bad guy though... (the last scene)
The first episode is mind blowing... Each and every character, their introduction, nature, character, development, mystery, execution, casting, everything is off the charts... I can't help but rewind each scene and watch it again and again... None of the characters are more or less important than the other characters. I don't think that I can find any other drama where there are 5 main characters with equal importance... This show can't be any more perfect... <3 <3 <3 They really have the magic that they had in the Reply 1988

I think that this drama is planned to be a 20 episode drama like Reply 1988 and Prison Playbook, but due to the strategy of Netflix to make more money and spinoff more seasons, so they could keep the Hype up and make money of it (like they did with Kingdom), they just broke it into two seasons. Also, breaking into 2 seasons could help the larger international audiences who binge watches these shows. (Normally in case of English Series' each season consists of only 10 episodes). Since the tone of the drama is not fast paced or thrilling one, it could work out as two seasons. But thr main problem is that if this strategy proves to be successful, all the other production companies will do the same. This could really change the Kdrama format of 16-20 episodes and not having multiple seasons. (Which is the main reason for me to try out kdrama in first place). It could also change the time for a drama to be completed as they are going to split one drama into multiple seasons and release it in different year. Releasing one drama into multiple seasons across different years will not guarantee the quality of the dramas either. Also, that could make the production companies lazy to produce more dramas and the no. of kdramas could reduce in the coming years. (thereby also reducing the diverse range of kdramas that we get). So I think that this format of splitting one drama into multiple seasons is a little dangerous.
My most anticipated kdrama of the year, also part 2 will be the most anticipated kdrama of next year too... I can vouch that this show will be damn good... Especially with the writer and the Director...
Whoever thought casting real transgender actor/actress into drama is viable.... you had a good dream.First of…
“It’s only after you’ve stepped outside your comfort zone that you begin to change, grow, and transform.” ― Roy T. Bennett In my opinion the Netizens are not the problem. During the past few years, The general audiences in Korea have been accepting towards dramas which feature LGBTQ themes (like lover, be melodramatic etc.) The problem lies within the industry who is afraid to take the risk. If you are going to deal with a topic as sensitive and relevant as this, you should go all out. If there is no much talent available from LGBTQ community, casting a male lead would be a better prefernce for the character. This drama makes a Lazy attempt to brush off the problems of the LGBTQ and use it to their advantage and take credit for it. Also, there have been some movies in the past which featured the theme of LGBTQ like King and the Clown 2005. It was before 15 years. (Of course, the Movie Industry and the Drama Industry are different). So the change in viewpoint is not sudden. Also, the General Audience are more accepting towards change than we think. With an Increase in LGBTQ themed dramas, there hasn't been a backlash from the Audience. As a matter of fact, the kdrama Production companies are so afraid to take risk that they couldn't even include a proper kiss scene in Gay Romance. The reasoning that "General Audiences are not open minded, There will be backlash etc." are just excuses made by these people because they are afraid to take Risk. Also, most of the Decision making executives in korean companies are Oldmen who are resistant to show something in support to LGBTQ communities. Maybe, That could be the reason why they are not willing to take any bold steps. So All I have to say is that, They don't deserve the credit for showing the struggles of LGBTQ community as they whitewashed them and couldn't convey a proper message (when there is clearly an opportunity to do so). So, In a way, All they are trying to do is trying to take the credit for representing the LGBTQ community by doing a sloppy job. (which I think is pretentious)
Casting a male actor & dressing him up as a woman would be the same thing with what they did with Lee Joo Young…
Yeah, If a transperson is nit available, giving the role to the male actor could've been more effective than giving it to a woman. Also, I hate to admit it, but I kind of understand what you are referring to. You are saying that "Making a woman Act like a Man in the first few episodes of the drama then making her act as a woman in the last few episodes (after transformation), And making a man Act as a man in the first few episodes and then making him Act as a Woman in the last few episodes (after transformation) is kind of same. Isn't it..? Although it is kind of Similar, I strongly believe that the second option of casting a male (in case of unavailability of transperson) could bring more food for thought tobthe audience. Especially with that toilet scenes, wherein the character is of a conflict along with the other side characters who said that this is a ladies toilet ( That would make them be understandable and make the seem less bitchy, as people could genuinely be confused when faced with a similar situation). Youvsee that, I am angry and Ranting about it because there is soo much scope for conveying a message in the drama and they just swapped it off by taking an easy choice by casting a pretty woman. Also I think that casting a male actor could actually make audiences think and helps the audience to have an open mind. Next time when a transperson who doesn't look very feminine goes to a ladies toilet, some of the people in the audience could relate and not question/ridicule /be uncomfortable around them.
Casting a male actor & dressing him up as a woman would be the same thing with what they did with Lee Joo Young…
Casting actual transwoman could be difficult, there is also the issue of availability of talent. While I agree that Transpeople doesn't have a "general look", they sure as hell doesn't look like Lee Joo Young. They just made her into a normal girl. Even though I don't want to say that Transpeople does look a little unnatural. (because of being born as the wrong sex). Also in case you missed it, I said it in my intial comment that " the role should be given to a male/transgender actor. That would be true to the character." I have a strong opinion that the role could be played better by A male actor (if transgender actor not available) as it could convey the proper strong message to the audience even if it makes some of them uncomfortable. All I want to say is that When dealing with Sensitive issues like these, they should not try to dilute the message in order to appeal to the masses. And in this case I strongly feel that they did dilute the issue by casting a pretty woman as a transperson who doesn't have the representative feature of a transperson.
Casting a male actor & dressing him up as a woman would be the same thing with what they did with Lee Joo Young…
The character identifies herself as a woman. Therefore the character is transexual. I recommend you to watch the movie Danish Girl. Story about the first person to undergo sex change surgery. By watching the role played by Eddie Redmayne as Einar Wegener / Lili Elbe (Lili Elvenes) could help you understand more about this issue.
Casting a male actor & dressing him up as a woman would be the same thing with what they did with Lee Joo Young…
I completely disagree. One of the main reasons of the transgender character arc is to show people the difficulties faced by the Transgender as well as to change the way people's attitude towards transgender community. Casting a female as the transgender who eventually turns into a woman does not show how the transgender looks in real life. As in the movie King and the Clown, they were able to portray it correctly. Korean audiences are close minded and are resistant to change. (one of the main reasons why most of the Gay scenes in kdrama doesn't have kissing scenes). To make a change in people's mindset, they have to show the reality of how a transgender person generally looks like. On a side note, lete ask you a question, if they cast a Korean for the role of Toni, would it give you the same message? So, the drama could address those issues of Racism through accurate casting. But, they are not brave enough to resist the mindset of the audiences by showing how a real transgender person looks like. If it was a Male actor casted for the role of Hyun Hi, the scene where she went to bathroom to cry and ladies saying that it's a woman's toilet, dancing at the pub etc... Would have proper impact on the audiences. There would even be people in audiences who would find the message uncomfortable. In my Opinion, the director wants to brush off the struggles of Transgender and take credit for it without actually trying to convey a proper message. (maybe because they're too afraid to take a risk). It's like asking for credit for doing a bad job.
LOL I actually found myself rooting for the ML. I didn't like that the FL was so shady and would go to any means…
Actually does it never occur to you that the ML is the one who is shady. Of course the FL is not a good person, but she shows that she's not. But the character of the ML is even more shady because he acts like a righteous person when he's just the same. He is arrogant and looks down on people coming from humble background (because he's the son of a judge..?), also the case he won in the first episode seems kind of shady. Then again, in Kdramas people crictise Female Leads more than the male leads for their decisions or ways. It's just the thing in people's mind that whatever FL does are pretentious annd whatever ML does is acceptable.
