I saw that during this episode noey passed through a lot of pain, watching his mother be stabbed and then disrespected by thi's parents, losing his best friend, being sidelined by thi, the effort in studies. All those sacrifices for thi because he truly was optimistic but that call reminded him of a reality he could no longer ignore. So he lied to keep thi away from him and protect his future. That was sad but essential
